Convince Me That Mario Party is a Good Franchise

I'm not trying to be a troll, but I am just baffled that a lot of people are merely saying MP9 will be good because it is Mario Party and therefore a massive success. The MP franchise stopped being good after the first 3 N64 games, because every single game suffers the "Pokemon Syndrome", or rather, doesn't change the gameplay at all and instead uses stale and repetitive minigame ideas while at the same time the boards constantly lack appeal and enjoyable movements.

The last MP game I played was Mario Party Advance, which every MP fan seemed to hate the f*** out of. Why? Just because the gameplay took a radical POSITIVE turn and made it a much better game? True, there were no real multiplayer options (who the hell cares honestly) and the gameplay of moving around the boards was a tad different, but the overall feel of the game, in my opinion, was some of the best minigame-oriented projects I have ever played. The last true party game I thought had major potential was Crash Bash. But of course, people criticized the game for having repetitive minigames, but the controls, rules, and the objectives of the games were all in good fun, just keeping score. In MP, if someone is just mashing buttons or gets a lucky shot, they can run away with all the Stars and be a total n00b who didn't know how the hell they did it, compared to a pro who knows how to actually play it. Crash Bash just had keeping score, no boards or any bullcrap spaces that can make you lose unfairly.

So, erm, anyways, uh, COME AT ME BRO I guess.

MP9 is having radical changes,

SO THERE.

Ok, so they are basing MP9 off of Mario Party Advance board-wise. One positive doesn't equal a good game. And even if there are cars now, I bet NDCube will screw something up to make it just entirely luck.

From MarioWiki:
Like previous Mario Party titles, four players take part in each game, composed of a virtual board, and move around a variety of themed lands to collect stars, while avoiding certain spaces. A gameplay element in one of the boards is that all four players will move around in one vehicle
Sounds like every MP game ever.

And from the footage I saw, the minigames are massively repetitive in nature.

There are loads major changes. This Mario Party is radically different to the rest. A few are changes are:

It's not just four Players in the Car, before you start a Board Game you have the option of having 2, 3 or 4 People/ CPUs in the board. So, say for example you have 2 other friends round and you only want to play with them and no CPU, you can have a 3 player game, which modifies Minigames ( Specifically 1 vs 3) around the amount of players.

Oh and everyone is NOT working cooperatively, the idea of the game is to try to screw everyone else over and keeping people on their Toes by for example: Going down a certain path and making someone else get some purple Mini-Stars on their turn.

Everyone is travelling together, people complained in past games watching CPU turns was boring, people wanted a Fast- Forward Button. BUT now everyone is more involved all the time as you get involved in events and sudden order switches. Meaning that you don't sit there for 5 minutes watching CPUs go Shopping (There are no Shops now) or spending 2 minutes catching coins in a basket.

There are no random Minigames each turn, which radically speeds up gameplay and you play Minigames when you land on a Minigame space. The player who landed on it choses a Minigame out of three choices ( they are not random on a roulette Wheel). PLUS all Minigames are unlocked from the start, meaning you don't have to play Hundreds of Board Games to unlock that ONE last Minigame. the Boss battles are also VERY fun ( You MUST play 2 each board game, one half-way and one at the end) and everyone has to try to damage the boss the most and deal the final blow! those who do get more mini-Stars.

This is a list of only a few great changes, in my Opinion, it looks the best Mario Party yet and I'm SO getting it on Friday! ( I live in the UK) If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you have friends and family to play reguraly, it's amazing. Ciao.  :shyguy:

No, the majority of the game you will have to rely on others for more power and skill as you get closer and closer to the boss battles. Which is exactly the problem. Say if someone is legit in wanting to actually clear the board and beat the boss, then you have another who waits until the last second and screws your whole team over when he hasn't been doing anything the whole time. It's like in NSMBWii where you can throw your allies into a pit or whatever. It's BS, and just goes to show you that even if you have a great amount of skill, you can still get royally screwed in the end. Sorry, I am not into games that has a retarded co-op system that's co-op, but not co-op, and eventually screws you over.

Everyone is travelling together, people complained in past games watching CPU turns was boring, people wanted a Fast- Forward Button. Uh, then why can't Nintendo do something more smarter and when it comes to the CPU's turn, you just press the A button to skip it while still maintaining their results? We have the dang technology to do that. Me being in a car with unreliable AI or stupid HMN players makes me real uncomfortable. And ok, Shops were retarded, so I give you that.

So you literally have no challenge to unlock games or even have the sense of adventure on unlocking new things. Cool. Way too boring for me though. So everything is handed to you on a silver platter. No thank you. I want a challenge.

I could care less if we had to unlock each minigame or if all were already unlocked so this change Idc about.

What I DO hate it is you don't play a mini game after everyone did their turn.  I know NdCube are taking chances to see what the reception will be about it, but come on, then how about give us an option if we want to play a  mini game or not after everyone did their turn?  The mini game can determine who the next captian can be and  the winner also gets the most mini stars.  Plus, I like to play a minigame after everyone did their turn (and they can make it so it determines the next captain and they win the most ministars since they came in first).  Now that will be good and be different.  What a shame.  And no, don't say "this speeds it up" they DID make it so the gameplay IS sped up, by everyone going together (which I like btw and I also like where it is coop and competitive at the same time).

But, hate to break it to you OP, all board games where you roll dice to advance is all by luck, rather its in a video game or a table top.  MP 9 looks to be just as lucky as past MP games.

And to me, MP 4 was the best MP game.

I really hate what the objective in Mario Party is (get the most Stars). I wish you just did a set of minigames and just added those totals to your total score when you returned to the main board, because people can steal Stars when you could be on top of the world. With a good party game like Crash Bash, you don't have any of that BS. I dunno, I guess I prefer skill over luck, but unfortunately, Mario Party is all about luck. And come on, every game has had mixed reviews (except MP1, 2, 3, and 8 ) because of this fact....and due to the minigames being unoriginal.

EDIT: I know, Cook, but I just wanted to people to try and explain why they like the series so much. Some of these responses I guarantee will say "Because it be mario game!!"

1. There are lots of good games that got mixed/ bad reviews. Ign/ Gamespot are stupid.
2. Quality>Quantity. I know Mario Party 9 minigames start when you land on a certain space, but minigame's quality is impressive.
3. Just because your star could be stolen, you hate Mario Party Series? :what:
4. Just because MP9 looks like Mario Party Advance, you hate it? Duh.
If you hate the Mario Party 9 game style, then just don't buy it, Everybody have their opinions, and I don't mean to offend you or what.

Mario Party Games have always remained fun, no matter how many times I have played it. It's always a different game every time you play it, with where you happen to go, to what items you get. It's always those parts of luck that makes me want to play the game over and over again. All players get the chance to win the game like this!

Sure, Mario Party 9 still stays true to this, but it just requires less luck towards it. You'll have to plan out your moves to mess the others up with your dice blocks. You might like Mario Party 9 more because it being more skill-based than most Mario Party's.

Most likely the main reason I play Mario Party, though, is for the mini-games! The Mario Party series holds some of the best mini-games I have ever played, and I still play those mini-games because of that. Sure, it could be something small, like racing through a course, or battling on an area, but it's those kind of things that make players want to play the games again and again.

Mario Party, in general, is one of those games you can just play it with a couple of your friends and just have fun. That's all the game has really meant to me.

1. There are lots of good games that got mixed/ bad reviews. Ign/ Gamespot are stupid.

A lot of other reviewers have said the same thing about the MP series, not just IGN and Gamespot. Just because some of them said that MP is bad doesn't mean they are "stupid". This is the major flaw in fanboyism, just warning you.

Remember that MP7 got a 6/10 from Nintendo Power, which is one of the biggest fanboy fueled magazine out there. So that means you're going to call them a stupid source too?

2. Quality>Quantity. I know Mario Party 9 minigames start when you land on a certain space, but minigame's quality is impressive.

.....I don't get the point of this, as I didn't say that having more minigames was better than having good ones.

3. Just because your star could be stolen, you hate Mario Party Series? :what:

It's the idea of n00bs who have never played the game before can just all of a sudden steal all of your hard-earned Stars and then they boost about being the "MP Champion" when really all it took was sheer luck and that's what I hate about the series. I would like it a lot better if they just had score totals and the largest amount determined if you were the champ or not. Like I said, I prefer skill over luck (And i'm pretty sure most of you get pissed off when you lose a lot of Stars just because someone was LUCKY enough to get them) and I'm sticking to that for the sake of actually enjoying the game.

4. Just because MP9 looks like Mario Party Advance, you hate it? Duh.

Uh no? Besides the vehicle system, nothing in MP9 remotely resembles anything from Mario Party Advance. I have explained to you already that I LOVED MPA, and I thought it was one of the best in the MP franchise. If it was more like MPA, I would definitely buy it.

If you hate the Mario Party 9 game style, then just don't buy it, Everybody have their opinions, and I don't mean to offend you or what

This isn't about me buying the game. I merely want to see why everyone thinks this franchise is a good series. So far, I haven't heard anything that different besides "oh because it's fun and it's mario".

B: Wasn't there something called "Mini-Game Stadium" (MP1 & 2) that did just that?  I miss Mini-Game Stadium.  :(
I: Where when you can use Boo to Steal them back, if you're good at the Mini-Games, or you can steal WHILE you on top of the world.  Chance Time too, at an extent.
U: Disagree completely; it's not ALL about luck.  Mini-Games - for the most part (I h8 Merry-Go-Chomp and Stacked Deck) - requires skill; knowing and taking advantage of board and game mechanics and Items is about skill.  Using items at the most effective time - A Lucky Lamp when someone is too close, for example - is skill.  Dealing with bad luck and making the most of good luck - ironically - IS skill.

And I honestly don't see where your pain is coming from regarding luck; it's not biased, even when it decides to pull a BS move on you.  That's why bad luck - even at its worst - doesn't bother me, especially in the MPs that have - and especially sell - items.

Mario Party is hardly predictable (especially since dice are (almost- see Slow shroom) always fickle).  I enjoy dealing with and overcoming luck, especially Bad luck.  I enjoy analyzing the Boards and devising strategies for them and improvising for when bad luck occurs.  I enjoy using items: the only true measure of control in MP - and buying items for my plans as well.  I even like it when my plans come crashing down - even due to an opponents excessively good luck; that truly tests whatever skill and mettle I possess.

That's why I like Mario Party, and I find it exciting whenever I'm behind.

[Edit:  I said something clearly stupid.  Modified to make it less so.  :-[]

Yeah, that's why the first N64 installments were the best because they offered a much more balanced and fair option.
Where when you can use Boo to Steal them back, if you're good at the Mini-Games, or you can steal WHILE you on top of the world.  Chance Time too, at an extent.

You have a point, but I disagree at the same time. I played MP7 a while back and it only takes like one slip-up to lose everything. That's why I hate it. You can play fair and actually have skill for the longest time and then a n00b or little kid can just mash buttons not knowing what they are doing and can easily get more Stars then you. The minigames that MP has today can easily be completed by just tapping a few buttons or you going crazy with the controller and winning without even knowing what you just did. There really isn't any strategy whatsoever.

See above post, and dealing with bad luck is general in the MP series since the game literally goes out of your way to screw you every which way. :V

Because it shouldn't take sheer luck to lose against someone who has never touched a controller before? Or someone who has never played MP before? Or if someone claims to be a God at the time but then at the last second the game decides to give someone 1000000 Stars and in return you lose 1000000 Stars.

Uh, ND Cube only did one MP game....Hudson did all the rest.

This doesn't bode well if you think ONE, UPCOMING game will be ruined further by some other developer.

If you want to play a pure skill game, Mario Party is NOT for you.  Plain and simple.  There will always be luck involved, and it will never change.  Mario Party in it's most simple description is a party game.  It isn't meant for those hardcore gamers that win every time, it's meant for the family or some friends to get together and play a game that doesn't have a steep learning curve or impossible odds of winning.  Because of the way the game works, anyone could win at any time for any reason or no reason at all.  It sounds to me like you have a problem with losing, and yes, losing isn't fun, but you can't win 'em all.  The reason you keep playing Mario Party is to have fun while attempting to win in the process.  It also sounds like whomever you play with is a sore winner, claiming to be a "Mario Party god."  There's a spirit of Mario Party you need to have in order to really enjoy it to its fullest.

If this doesn't sound like you, don't play Mario Party.  If you need to be convinced then you aren't interested and that's fine.  Play something else like Assassin's Creed or Uncharted or CoD.  Those are probably more up your alley.

The MP franchise stopped being good after the first 3 N64 games,
Apologies, but I can't even take this post seriously merely for this.

Why.

You might as well say only the first one is good because the next two ones are pretty much the same. Everyone just shuns 4-8 and is like OMG!!111 MP64!1 IT suckS after that cause their being so repetitive OMG"

And then you embrace Mario Party Advance?
I mean, I liked Mario Party Advance for what it was but it doesn't even deserve the Mario Party title IMO as it wasn't very enjoyable after a few playthroughs. It was also way too single-player oriented (which sucks bad if you ask me) and the little side-missions you had to go through like every other turn were not fun at all and began to feel like a chore after a while.

Now, don't get me wrong, I do not think any Mario Party game is perfect, and I have my share of complaints from the games too (MP9 comes to mind). But I still like the series as a whole.
