Escort Missions

How do you feel about escort missions in gaming?

Escort missions have to be the most frustrating mechanic in gaming. I (insert Kefka line) hate them due to terrible setup, horrendous difficulty balance, unbearable pacing, stupid AI, and the fact that most characters you have to escort I never want to see again.

Nothing of note is popping in my head aside from M&LSS with Peach.

That was quite annoying in my younger days.

Are we considering escort missions in the same category as defense missions? Because I hate having a character that stands in the center of the room and I have to defend at all sides for whatever amount of time.

Ohh Goldeneye.

Not sure whether this counts but I thought Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite was probably the best executed that I've played. It really helped that she found health, salts and ammo for you when you really needed it.

You don't protect Elizabeth in that game at all. She's invincible and enemies never attack her.

I thought that was a really distracting part of Infinite.  Took me out of the immersion and pre-release they had bigger plans for her AI.

Well it really helped me because I suck at first person shooters and end up wasting all my bullets on the air.
