Super Mario Sunshine

The main Mario game on the GameCube. Did you ever play the game? Thought? Likes/dislikes?

I owned and played SMS a few years after it came out. Beat the game to completion. I thought the level themes were great and the FLUDD mechanics were a nice twist on the SM64 style of gameplay.

The Blue Coins were the worst. Ground pound this random area in level 3 of this world? Blue Coin!

It really is a fun game, and the aspect of exploring is great, though a bit of a lesser extent than Super Mario 64. I beaten the game a few times, and Blue Coins are tedious to collect. Sure it help you get into exploring the levels more, there was just too many of them (240) and those 24 Shine Sprites could have used for additional episodes instead. 20% of the game is solely on Blue Coins.

Cleaning up goop is fun, though a few levels didn't really feature it enough (Gelato Beach, Pinna Park, and Sirena Beach).

It's not my favorite 3d Mario game, but it does hold a special place in my heart, since it was the first video game I've ever played. Love the beach themes and the uniqueness. I've had fun playing the game just to complete the game. The secret levels are not broken by any means, but they are a bit too frantic for my taste. That probably explains why I'm scared to die in this game. The physics (specifically the slope detection) can be very wonky, and that alone makes me scared. Functional, but frantic if you don't know what you're doing. There are a few missions that suffer from lack of direction (Mysterious Hotel Delfino) or just tediousness (The Secret of Casino Delfino). There's no nonlinearity. So pointless shine sprites are pointless. ;D ;D The graphics look gorgeous for a GCN game, but  do have one nitpic. Most of the enemies' designs look bizarre and somewhat too polygonal. It's underrated. but I do think it's good for what it tries to do. :)

Super Mario Sunshine isn't exactly a perfect game, but it's one of my personal favorite games because of how fun the platforming was. I wish there were another game in the vein of Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Sunshine, but it seems like Nintendo is a bit complacent with the 2.5D side-scrolling aspect of things nowadays.

i got 117 shines; the last three that i missed were blue coin ones and i didn't feel like going vigorously going through the game to try and find them

Never had the chance to play it :p. I'm still hoping that they release a remake of the game someday.
You can try it on PC through an emulator like Dolphin, if you have access to the original game.
so if you have a gcn you could probably try to find a used/retro game store to see if they have a copy.

It's a good game but in recent times I think it's becoming overrated. Everyone seems to put it on a really high pedestal, and while the game is fun, it can become repetitive with Secret, Boss, Shadow Mario Chase, Red Coins plus there was many wasted opportunity for shines on Blue Coins. I would've liked more interesting platforming missions like The Caged Shine Sprite too.
