Hi all.  Just registered to the site.  :)  I recently began considering buying either Mario Party 5, 6, or 7 and thought I would ask which one(s) you guys would recommend.  I'm fairly new to the Mario Party games--I've only played MP4 and MPDS so far, and haven't even really gotten through story mode on either one yet because I usually just feel like a quick play.  I've enjoyed both of them pretty well though.  I understand there are microphone options for MP6 and 7, but I don't see how it would be that much of a draw for me either way.  So with all that said, any recommendations?  Which installments would you say have the funnest/best mini-games/boards/items?  Any notable differences or similarities between 5, 6, and 7 and MP4 and DS that may be useful to know about beforehand or which somebody who's only played 4 and DS would find particularly enjoyable or frustrating?  Which are best for single/multiplayer (I probably play alone more often than multiplayer)?  Thanks for your time. :)

Ah, so touching...

Anyway, I would recommend that you get Mario Party 6, because it has the Day/Night aspect, lots of mini-games, and 11 playable characters (1 unlockable). It also has Solo Mode, in which you have 3 boards to play on. Mario Party 7 kind of have some similar modes to that of Mario Party 6, however, in Solo Mode, you are given an objective to accomplish. Mini-games are also similar of some sort, as well. Mario Party 7 even has a mode where 8 people can play at once (by sharing controllers). Mario Party 5 has some good boards, and the Story Mode is where you battle the Koopa Kids. It also has a good variety of mini-games, too.

So I recommend that you get Mario Paty 6 first, then Mario Party 5, then Mario Party 7 if you can afford them all. ;)

You should also introduce yourself in the Intro Board. :)

Well I got Mario Party 6, and so far the minigames seem pretty fun.  I've only played on one board so far (the tree one), but it seemed alright, when I could manage to roll more than a 3.  I ended up losing to Toad by something like 16 coins at the end.  Might have turned out differently if he wasn't getting gold mushroom orbs on approximately every single turn (which also gave him the orb star--beat Boo by 1).  I see they've carried on the tradition of BS rolls popping up at inopportune times.  :p

From that one playthrough I have a couple questions though.  First, what determines whether you find coins inside orbs or not?  I didn't seem to get any at all most of the time and everybody else was getting coins hand over fist it seemed.  Also, at some point I ended my turn on a duel space, and then somebody else (Toad I think) ended their turn on the same space.  He dueled me and I won a star from him, then after everybody's turn there was another duel between me and Toad where I lost the star back, which induced much rage naturally.  Does that repetition of duels always happen when characters are stopped on the same duel space?  It was at night I think, if that matters.  I haven't exactly scoured the manual, but I don't believe I ran into any information of that nature from what I have read.

So yeah, so far MP6 seems alright.  Obviously the first impression would have been better if I could have gotten a win out of my first playthrough..lol.  It was pretty close at the end though, so a few different rolls could have possibly made a big difference.  I haven't tried out the microphone stuff yet and haven't even really checked if it works (I was really only able to find the game used, obviously, since it's ancient by retail standards).  If anybody has any general tips for playing that would be wonderful. :)  I also have MP5 on the way, since I had enough spare moneys for both.

1. With coins in orbs, I often find that coins appear more often in orbs obtained from Orb Spaces. Though there is no determining whether you will get coins. I think you were just unlucky.
2. The reason why Toad dueled with you is probably because it was the last 5 turns - whenever two players land on the same space, a duel occurs. At least, that's what I understand from what you're saying. Was Toad the last player to move?

Anyway, glad to hear you've enjoyed MP6.

1.  Yeah, I'm not on great terms with most random number generators. :p
2.  Yes, Toad was last in the turn order.  He landed on the same duel space I did, I think he chose to duel me, I won and got the 2 stars, then the turn ended and another duel automatically occured and I don't think any opponent selection took place, though Toad seemed to be the one to determine what was at stake.  I then lost the 2 stars.  I may have missed a couple of details in the description either from just not noticing or remembering, or from rage-induced memory loss, because that was incredibly irritating. :p

Re point 2: as I said earlier, duels automatically occur if a player lands on another player's space in the last 5 turns. The person who just completed their turn makes all the decisions of what is at stake - I think this is what (unfortunately) happened to you. Having Toad landing on a Duel Space you were on doesn't help that much, either. (especially with Toad stealing 4 Stars!!!) :p

Ohhh! Ok, I got it now.  I thought the "duel if two players land on the same space" rule only applied to the last place player.  I don't remember when exactly that occurred, but that would completely make sense then. :)  Still sucks that it happened though..lol.
