Alternative Rock is a sub-genre that emerged in the 1980's as part of rock culture.

I seriously think alternative is just a method of marketing music.
Alternative was given its name due to at the time everyone was into jazz, folk and country. That was oddly considered rock at the time, so people brought back regular rock which was declared "Alternative Rock". Oddly, most people think the name sounds cool, so they stuck with that for most of the songs today.
