1. E-102 Gamma
Gamma. Surprised? I'm sure some of you are. I've been keeping this as surprise for so long, but now I can finally say that Gamma is my favorite Sonic character EVER. This selfless robot has appealed to me more than any other Sonic character to date. So why is Gamma my favorite? For one, his gameplay is solid, being a shooter that is a nice break from speed. His appearance is also neat, being armed with weapons to eliminate anyone in his way. However, the main reason why I came to like Gamma so much is his story. Gamma is a creation of Eggman's that appears to have emotions. He is disturbed by Eggman's harsh treatment of his brothers and has sympaphy for a bird he was supposed to abduct. This led him to his betrayal of Eggman and determination to free the animals from his brothers. Eventually, he comes across Beta, whom he damages in battle. Out of sympaphy, Gamma walks towards Beta who then shoots him at point-black range. Beta then explodes, releasing a bird. Gamma realizes that the bird he was supposed to abduct and Beta's bird were family with his own bird. And so, Gamma gives in to his own damage and explodes, releasing his own bird.
Let me get this straight. A robot, built by the maddest of scientists that captured animals, risked his life for freedom of them. If this heart-wrenching family reunion isn't enough to make you shed a tear, the music that plays through this scene will. This death hit me hard because of how real of a character Gamma seemed, even for a robot. Of all the souls I have encountered in the characters, his was the most... human. And that is why Gamma is my favorite Sonic character of all time. It's not because he's powerful. It's because how well they showed the emotional aspects of Gamma, rather than just his power. Some of you may think this is beyond corny, but this is no exaggeration. I truly feel this way. Some people believe that Sonic is not supposed to be deep in any sense, but after seeing Gamma's tragic and beautiful story of desperation, I don't see why not. Gamma's actions are unlike any other character I've seen in any Sonic media. He changed my outlook on Sonic ever since this event, but also part of life itself. He means a lot to my media life, showing me that even something nothing more than commonly seen as a fighting tool can in fact be beautifully deep and wondrous piece of writing, and that is something no other Sonic character can ever replicate. He's one original, powerful, unfathomly memorable character for his valiant deeds. I am Jinx, and Gamma is, by far, my favorite Sonic character ever. He is more than a robot. He's a hero.
He's my hero.
