Hazy Maze Cave

The sixth course of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. The course has many hidden ledges, nooks, crannies, and alcoves, countless bottomless pits, and even an underground lake with a large but friendly sea monster named Dorrie. A map can be found in many areas of the course. The Hazy Maze, the level's namesake, is located deep within the cave. The Hazy Maze is a labyrinth whose passageways are clouded with a highly toxic yellow gas (purple in the remake). The player's health is slowly depleted the longer he stays in the maze, and he will eventually suffocate if he is unable to get fresh air. To make matters worse, the Hazy Maze is full of Snufits, Monty Moles, Scuttle Bugs and Swoopers that can hinder the player's progress. Fortunately for the player, there are small areas of higher ground scattered throughout the maze, N64; a Metal Box (Metal Mario is unaffected by the poisonous fumes. Wario in the DS version), and several escape routes that are clearly marked on the map just outside the entrance. Obtaining certain Stars requires the use of certain escape routes.

Some people mistakenly believe that the entire course is the Hazy Maze; however, the Hazy Maze title only applies to the aforementioned maze.

Stars:
Star 1: Swimming Beast In The Cavern
Star 2: Elevate For 8 Red Coins
Star 3: Metal Head Mario Can Move! (Metal Head Wario Can Move in DS version)
Star 4: Navigating The Toxic Maze
    Star 5: A-Maze-Ing Emergency Exit
Star 6: Watch For Rolling Rocks
Star 7 (DS): Underground Switch Star
Star 8: Collect 100 Coins (not in star selection screen, Star 7 in N64 version)

Super Mario 64 - Cavern of the Metal Cap
Super Mario 64 - Navigating The Toxic Maze

This is one of the few levels not accessed via a painting; instead, Mario must enter the door to the right of the entrance to Lethal Lava Land and jump into a pool of liquid metal inside. And it also should be accessed by defeating Bowser in the Dark World and getting the key for the castle's basement in order to access it.

N64 version only: In addition, there is a special hidden area in this course called the Cavern of the Metal Cap that can be accessed through a door near the underground lake. The Metal Cap's ! Switch is located here, along with eight more Red Coins that can be collected to receive one of the castle's Secret Stars.

A tricky world, but easy nonetheless. In the poisonous maze of the DS version, you stop and take damage in there, preventing you to move for a moment. The Nintendo 64 version did not have that issue. It's a way to make it a bit more difficult, I guess.

And the special hidden area, Cavern of the Metal Cap is also in the DS version. Two stars in there. What is not there is the switch.

Exactly, when I tried to get a star in An A-Maze-Ing Emergency Exit, as I overshoot the bars, I fell and failed. But in the DS version, that was removed.

The DS version shows 2 secret stars and no switch, just a secret level.

Yeah, this was one hella boring level. The only Star I liked was the Hazy Maze stars like A-Maze-Ing Escape since I like worlds with finding a certain exit or secret passage.

Also, the Star in the boulder that you had to break was ridiculous too. I tried to punch that goddamn boulder but most of the time it just bounces me back before I can. :(

I always hated the first star when I was younger... but then I didn't know how to control Dori :p
Same here, I never knew you had to pound him back then.
My problem was how to turn him around! I kept getting annoyed when I kept trying to go to the Metal Cap Room...
Once you're on his head, Dorrie head in the direction Mario is facing. Does that help?

Wait - it's where Mario is facing? I always thought it as the screen's direction...
...well, it still worked out for me anyways...

Yeah. Glad I could help you out with that part. :)

This wasn't my favorite world. I just wasn't a fan of the setting. I remember when I was younger, I tried so hard to not get hit by those boulders, but failed. :p Dori annoyed me.
It is hard to get the 1st star "Swimming Beast in the Cavern" because you have to control Dori.

In the DS version, the island with the Power Star is easier to reach, but you will need to play as Wario to whack the Boulder to get the Power Star.
