Shifting Sand Land Stars – Super Mario 64 Walkthrough

Our Shifting Sand Land stars guide is part of our Super Mario 64 walkthrough and features all seven Power Stars and their locations.

Super Mario 64 Walkthrough and Stars Guide

Like every world in our Super Mario 64 walkthrough, Shifting Sand Land has a total of seven stars to collect. Six are obtained through the level stages while the final star is earned once you collect 100 coins in a single run. Jump to each of the Shifting Sand Land stars with the links below!

Star 1 – In the Talons of the Big Bird

Use the Wing Cap on top of the stone structure at the start to get to one of the four tall pillars surrounding the pyramid. Klepto the bird holds a star as it flies around the pillars. While on the pillar, jump as it passes by to grab the star. You can also grab it while flying the star you aim correctly.

Star 2 – Shining Atop the Pyramid

Star is located inside a small hole at the top of the pyramid. You can use the Wing Cap to get to it, otherwise go through the Tox Boxes Maze and walk up the path around the pyramid.

Star 3 – Inside the Ancient Pyramid

Get to the pyramid and head inside the hole at its base to get inside. Star is at the top. From the start, go either left or right to make it to the stairs on the opposite side. Take the only path down to the pole and climb up to the higher floor. Jump and grab onto the metal grate and get across to the steps. Use the hole in the wall to get past the rolling Spindel, then go up the next set of steps. Walk along the narrow path,  climb up the pole, jump over the Grindel, and climb up to the star.

Star 4 – Stand Tall on the Four Pillars

Stand on top of all four pillars surrounding the pyramid and the top of the pyramid will explode. One of the pillars requires the Koopa Shell or Wing Cap to get to. Head up to the top of the pyramid and head inside. Inside you’ll take an elevator down to the bottom of the inside of the pyramid where you’ll be able to access a hole in the wall.

In the next room you’ll fight Eyerok. Defeat it by attacking the eyes on its hands three times for each eye. Be careful not to get squashed or pushed off!

Star 5 – Free Flying for 8 Red Coins

Wing Cap required! Collect all eight red coins and a star will appear at the stone structure near the start. The red coin locations include:

  • As soon as the level starts, turn around and find one in the far corner.
  • Inside the brick block at the stone structure.
  • One in the Tox Box maze.
  • In the water of the oasis.
  • Four red coins between each of the pillars. Fly to get them!

Star 6 – Pyramid Puzzle

Return to the inside of the pyramid and go all the way to the top, just like you did for the third level. Instead of getting the star, look for an opening in the platform underneath the platform with the star. Drop through this opening and drop onto the square platform below where you’ll collect the first of five special coins. Drop down to two more platforms, both of which require a small bit of forward movement. From there, drop down to the sand river and collect the last two coins for the star to appear at the end.

Star 7 – 100 Coins Star

Collect 100 coins without dying or leaving a level to earn an additional star. Collect all the coins you see laying around but do keep in mind the following tips as you play. There’s a possible 136 coins to collect.

  • Pokeys give blue coins if you take out the head.
  • Collect the red coins for an extra 16 coins.
  • Only go inside the pyramid once you have everything outside, you can’t go back!
  • Inside the pyramid is a blue coin switch on the first floor, worth 15 coins.
