Cool, Cool Mountain Stars – Super Mario 64 Walkthrough

Our Cool, Cool Mountain stars guide is part of our Super Mario 64 walkthrough and features all seven Power Stars and their locations.

Super Mario 64 Walkthrough and Stars Guide

Like every world in our Super Mario 64 walkthrough, Cool, Cool Mountain has a total of seven stars to collect. Six are obtained through the level stages while the final star is earned once you collect 100 coins in a single run. Jump to each of the Cool, Cool Mountain stars with the links below!

Star 1 – Slip Slidin’ Away

From the starting area, hop up to the chimney and jump inside to transport yourself to an icy slide course. Once you step on the slide, you’ll slam down onto your butt and start moving forward without being able to go back. Your goal is to make it all the way to the bottom without falling off. After a few turns, you’ll see a striped wall connect with the slide. Look for a line of coins leading to a wall. Follow it and phase right through the wall to find a secret tunnel. At the end, walk through the door and claim you star outside.

Star 2 – Li’l Penguin Lost

There’s a loud penguin crying up on in the area above the chimney. Grab it and start making your way down the mountain as you attempt to return it to its mother. No, you can’t use the invisible warp around the corner of the starting area! Slide down the slippery area until you hit the bridge. Run underneath the jumping snowmen as they jump towards you to make it easier to pass. From there you can take the wooden path down or simply jump down to the mother penguin in the pond. Show her the penguin child to get your star!

If you jump off the section just after the wooden area at the very start of the level, you may be able to land all the way down near the mama penguin. It’s risky!

Star 3 – Big Penguin Race

Return to the slide inside the chimney and this time you’ll find a penguin. Speak to it and you’ll set up a race to the finish. This time you won’t be able to use the secret tunnel so you’ll have to slide all the way down. Pushing back on the control stick will cause Mario to slow down, something that can be useful when turning tight corners and turns. That also means pushing forward will make Mario go faster, use this while on safer paths! Be aware of the final row of ice blocks, make sure you position your so you can zip through in a straight line. Wait for the penguin to arrive past the finish line and claim your star.

Star 4 – Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins

Collect all eight red coins and a star will appear across the broken bridge. These red coin locations:

  • Above the tree in the starting area.
  • After you slide down the slippery path, look for the red coin along the wall.
  • Just before stepping onto the lift.
  • Above the tree near the mama penguin.
  • Pass the mama penguin and walk around the corner.
  • Underneath the wooden path are two bridges and a floating platform with a red coin on top.
  • Use the cannon near the snowman head and aim for the ice pole on the side of the mountain.
  • Walk past the bridge with the snowmen and grab the red coin at the end of the broken bridge.

Star 5 – Snowman’s Lost his Head

There’s a snowball in the wooden area near the start. It needs you to lead it to the snowman head at the end of the slippery path. Slide down and stay in front of the snowball and guide it to the head. Once both snowballs meet, the star is yours.

Star 6 – Wall Kicks will Work

Unlock the cannon by speaking to the pink Bob-omb Buddy on the small island floating next to the lift. Enter the cannon near the mama penguin and aim above the tree across the gap and high enough that your cursor points at the ceiling above it. Follow the path on the other side and long jump over the gap.

Wall jump time. Pass the Healing Heart and jump and hit A once you collide with the wall to jump off it, allowing you to reach the higher platform. From here, do a triple jump to reach the flat portion of the left wall and wall jump to reach the last platform. Walk across the ice and grab the star.

Star 7 – 100 Coins Star

Collect 100 coins without dying or leaving a level to earn an additional star. Collect all the coins you see laying around but do keep in mind the following tips as you play. There’s a possible 154 coins to collect.

  • Lost of coins on the slide in the chimney, including blue coins and lines of coins! You can easily collect most of your coins here.
  • There’s a blue coin switch in the area to the right of the quarter pipe section of the slippery path.
