Similarities in Pokemon

There are similarities in all the mainstream games besides the fact the starter is always Fire, Water, or Grass. (Electric in Yellow.)

One that I've found is that all Mainstream games have a Trainer that speciallizes in Ice-Type Pokemon as a boss as either a Gym Leader or Elite Four.

What Similarities have you found?
