I HOPE I WIN, OH, AND THIS IS MY FIRST SPOILER...... BECAUSE........... I WANTED TO TRY IT! XD This was for no apparent reason. XP
It's about time I updated this. Yup, it's not dead! So without further ado, who will be given the extremly respectable 5th place (tin medal)? When watching the Olympics my family always say the people who position 4th/5th deserve at least something like a tin medal for their hard word. xP

Mario, the main character; the one who brings Mario Kart to us in the first place! Without Mario, there is no kart That's why it would be ridiculous not to value him highly. His games are the reason many of our favourite characters exist in the first place. In addition, he's one of the, if not THE most recognizable video gaming face in existence. But enough of that.
Mario is the standard character to use. It is because of this however that he's often underused or perceived as relatively boring because people often prefer to use the more 'unique' characters that they previously wouldn't have had a chance to use such as Dry Bones or even Bowser. I myself am guilty of this, but would have no problem playing as Mario if I needed to. In order to not make the main character 'over powered', Nintendo made his stats decent, but not the best. Nonetheless, his colour scheme is great, and it's fun to make the three main protagonists: Mario, Luigi and Peach race against the antagonist Bowser to see whether good or evil reigns supreme like the good ol' fashioned games. Mario is a great option to use for anyone and it's because of this that he doesn't really have any downsides and I strongly believe he should have guaranteed place in any Mario-related top 10 ranking.

Peach is the main female character that always adds variety to the roster. Why? Because quite often she's the ONLY female character -_-; for example in the earlier Mario Karts.
Peach is often perceived as that 'dumb blonde useless plot device' however I don't think that's the case at all. Those people underestimate her (or are frantically looking for a reason to hate her because they don't like girls, as I've seen some people imply before, which is sad really). Why, does after every single time she's been kidnapped does she not protect her castle? Why does she not attempt to flee or even fight back like in Super Princess Peach (which proves she's more than capable of doing so) when she see's Bowser? The answer is obviously because she doesn't want to and actually isn't afraid of Bowser. She knows Mario will come and rescue her, so why not sit back and relax while her 'knight in shining armour' saves her? Clever eh? She deserves more credit than she gets. ;P
In addition, Peach is often wrongly assumed to have seemingly powerful AI. I think the problem here is that some people look out for anytime Peach, often the only girl, is in first place which just appears to be common, whereas a character e.g. Koopa could actually be winning just-as-often, but because not many pay attention/ care what place he positions in, he isn't seen as having powerful AI. An example of this is on the road, if you search for a specific car-type, chances are you'll see that car a lot, while there's another car model that you never paid attention to, that actually has passed you double the amount of times, but you just don't realize it.
Anyway, Peach is the character I like to use to troll anyone who don't believe feminine girls have any chance of winning. xP But in seriousness, I always liked playing as her because I found her fun to use, and as stated earlier, she adds variety to the roster as female characters just seem to be scarce in Mario games. :\ Despite not being overused, she's the second best medium weight character to use stats-wise. She's just awesome and beautiful inside and out. Mario games just wouldn't be the same without her.
