You got three choices. The one that started it all, the one that introduced items and costumes, and the one with the duel and story modes.

For me, it's gotta be Mario Party 3. The variety of items and the ability to hold 3 at a time, Waluigi and Daisy as playable characters, and the bigger emphasis on strategy make it an easy choice. Although I do think I prefer the minigames in 2.

The original was never an option.
 
Mario Party 3 is my favorite game behind EarthBound. I love the maps. I love the way it controls, the items are great, banging music and awesome maps. It's also fast as heck. A terrific experience.

I do like 1 and 2, but there are tons of things that bother me like the (?) spaces that just make you go backwards (I know they exist in Party 3, but at least there it's varied like Blooper moving you to the other side, etc.--in Party 2 there are spaces that just catapult you back to start, or spaces behind, etc.)
 
Mario Party 2 was my first one ever! I remember playing Hexagon Heat over and over and over with my cousin
 
2 is great, but 3 takes the cake for sure. No other game has matched how fantastic its items are, and the boards are fantastic too.

It's just a shame the minigames are pretty underwhelming.
 
Mario Party 3 will always be my favorite. It's the one that my friends and I played the most. The boards and minigames were my favorite of the N64 era, and the duel mode was awesome, especially with the partners and battles.
