Compared to the N64 one, the DS one was pretty bad. I did like the Wish Tracks though, the only good inclusion. And I really hated the Balloon Popping thing and the secret balloon that you had to draw in the sand.
1- Wish tracks were pretty lame, I loved drawing a track but it sucked that TT was the only one to race on it and he always fell off.
I always found that annoying too, so I used really bad characters.....and I still won. The music was nice though.

2- I have no clue why they replaced silver coin challenges with the balloon popping thing, it helped make the game way too easy.
3- It took me forever to figure out that you had to draw a balloon in the sand...
2: Yeah, it was easy, though the only tough part is getting all 50 balloons in a track.
3: That took me a while, I never understood how to get it correctly.

I really didn't like the N64, I like the DS version better. My main character I use is the blue-like elephant like. But I forgot the name. I got like more than 99 balloons in this game and unlocked Wish Race and Mirror Mode, including all unlockable characters. I think the DS version is a lot easier than the N64 version anyways. My favorite Battle track is the Cove in Ice Land or something. Anyway I love this game. =P

You mean Taj.

And 99 balloons? There's only 47 balloons in each adventure. And there's two, that makes it 94 (total combined).

And that was Icicle Pyramid.

Dude, Taj the elephant is purple. :p

Speaking of Taj though, it sucks that they changed his voice from the funny stereotypical Indian to the lame Brit.

I know right? I really like his voice with the funny stereotypical Indian though.

Me and my brother always loved that Indian voice. The new one is terrible. I like it when he says (in the N64 one) "this is for you!" when you get a balloon and "Ray hey" when he's excited. It would be good if it was on VC...

And I'm on my iPad so my typing may be bad.

Sorry for the late reply, but i do have the N64 version. I used to beat it when I was like 5 years old.

Sarcasm much? :p

But really, 99 balloons is impossible unless by cheat codes. Just saying.

Oh, yes. Easily wayyyy better than Mario Kart 64.

I like how you could just explore levels and see all the stuff that may be hidden/not normally seen while racing. I suppose the main levels would be the 4 that contain keys for the "Minigames/deathmatch" levels. (Which, yes, Icicle Pyramid is the bee's knees). It's hovercart version wasn't bad either (wanna say Blackwater Lagoon). Also love the Castle Varient with collecting Bananas. The Dino Egg capture is just too easy to have any fun :p Whether camping on the enemy spot, letting the first three eggs get taken first, go all out ape shit (and win with them having no points), etc. I've done it all to have fun in that mode, haha.

Frosty Village is one of my favorite tracks along with Star City. I love most of the tracks in the game actually, those two are probably my favorite however.

The bosses were great, only annoying one being the Octopus's rematch. Wizpig's last race can be a pain as well.

When I first got the game, I used Diddy just because it was Diddy, but quickly switched characters to mainly use is Pipsy and Tiptup. I never collect the bananas though :p After talking with Cook over his last play of this game, I said the next time I play, I will choose another character and go after bananas cause I never do that (don't really have to with TipTup/Pipsy).

I never unlocked T.T., and always unlock (or would unlock every time if he respawned after the first time) Drumstick, but I never play as him.

Music is also grand (David Wise, what you expect).... and I think I addressed everything off my head. Did I mention DKR >>>> MK64?

One of the few N64 games I remember playing as a child (note, that I never had an N64). Good times.

Good game. Definetly worth playing, even if just on an emulator. I have my doubts for the DS version, not because of the lack of Banjo and Conker.

Tiptup rules though.
I hated that they took out Banjo and Conker, easily the 2 most badass characters in the game cause of the Rare dilemma. ::) The DS version was pretty terrible compared to the original.
Except Rare made the DS version, too :p (I know, just taking your wording literal).

The DS version... I could live with the character changes they made (I wanna say I bought it first week of release) the only pain/thing that hindered the game was the startup at each race. Car you had to use the stylus (preferably with your left hand cause you don't need to steer at the start of any course and keep your right hand on the accelerator). Same for plane, but hovercraft was whatever.... BUT the hovercraft completely sucked compared to the N64. In the N64 game you could at least hop to save your turns (I think it was even enforced pretty much to do well), but... I can't even explain the DS controls and I never beat the Octopus the second time (off memory anyway).

Though that is the only cons. Characters, eh, Taj's voice, eh, hovercraft controls, >.<, and startups for each race... yea, and not being able to play any of those "minigames" whatever you wanna calls it other than in Multiplayer... OK :p

But I loved the extra tracks, I liked the custom pic that you can have on the tracks, and I liked being able to swap out the sounds for getting hit, firing a weapon, etc. I rocked the Bruce Campbell set for all of that :p "Chew on this!"

^^^
Used an Action Replay.

I have bad memories from Frosty Village. The silver coins were soooooooo hard, ridiculously hard. It took me a long time to beat it. Now I can do it easier without too much retries especially since I have most of DKR memorized by now but God damn it was hard! I lost every way possible. I remember specifically that I was once in the last turn with all the coins and a power outage happened. Probably the first time I ever cursed since I was like 8 lol.

And the egg stealing game still gives me troubles idk why. I just always got robbed and then 1 cpu would be stealing everyone's stuff. And as far as the bananas, I never used to collect them when I was younger much either, but like a few years ago I made the self-realization that the engine was getting mad loud when I had like 10 bananas. Then I tested it looking at the mph ticker thing. Around then I also learned swerving left and right constantly with the hovercraft especially in water makes you go faster than going straight.

The bosses in the game were a good enough challenge. I remember back in the day the 2nd rhino race (whatever the hell the first boss is, tryceritops idk) was so bad that like all the time when my cousins would come over we'd spent all day taking turns trying to beat him but never did it. The walrus was always a pushover. The 2nd octopus race has all the potential in the world to make you wanna punch someone in the face. Nuff said. And the dragon...oh man. I just straight up never beat him for years and never got to do the silver coins for the Dragon Forest area for a long time. And when I did beat it I remember Greenwood Village and Windmill Village or whatever being bitches. Greenwood Village became my new Frosty Village. And I already mentioned the first Wizpig boss being a terrible experience for me. I remember I was wearing a suit waiting to go for a wedding when I finally beat it. And the 2nd wizpig race I only beat New Years last year cause the Spaceport Alpha coin challenge bricked me for a few years to where I forgot that I never beat the game.

The music was great. For the DS I loved replacing the sounds too, my cousin had saved noises of him cursing and it was hilarious so I left it as that even today.

And finally, Diddy Kong Racing > Mario Kart 64. First of all, I don't even like MK64 that much compared to Double Dash or DS. Anyway, Diddy Kong Racing had more fun tracks, better atmosphere, and didn't have gay stuff like dysfunctional red shells. The only problem I had with the multiplayer was that I'd always kick ass. But I have one cousin who's mad good and my sister's pretty good so when us 3 play we have some great finishes, missels and bubbles galore. Too bad my 3rd controller has a broken Z and the 4th one is just retarded, sometimes steers in one direction at random times (it was like that when I bought it but I never said anything). But I use the broken Z which is a good equalizer when I play with other people.

David Wise, you have perfected the craft that the rest of us mortals refer to as "music" with your impeccably composed soundtrack to Diddy Kong Racing. Consequently, I firmly believe that all forms of music should have been brought to an immediate halt at some time in early 1998 after this game was released, because honestly, you have already achieved perfection. this includes a recall of all musical instruments from everywhere on the globe along with all compact discs, iPods, cassette tapes, vinyl, 8 track, DVDs, VHS tapes, anything with music in it. you have won mr. wise, you have won it all.

R.I.P. Music

Ancient Days - 1998

I honestly wouldn't go as far as saying David Wise is the shit when it comes to music. :p
