8B1T's Artwork - ~Revival~

**Note - the old topic can be found here: http://www.mariopartylegacy.com/forum/index.php?topic=1260.0**

I usually use traditional media (i.e. pencil and paper) for my artwork. I have used Wacom + SAI at times, and I have also made signatures in Photoshop and GIMP as well; I haven't really done those in a long time though.

Please note that I'm also notorious when it comes to requests - I'm sure I haven't completed Impulse's request from last year, nor Jinx's from 2012 or 2013. Oh well.

Most of these images were done in the past couple of months, by the way.

Images that I can't categorize for now.

lzhUei4.jpg

This is a revised design for a HUD of a Mario Party based activity I have never gotten around to hosting. This boils down to my being over-ambitious with character reaction portraits, a lack of time, and general amotivation to continue with this. :p Also, I can't draw Mega Man from memory that well. :p

PexFVAP.jpg

Drew the characters on the cover of Smash 3DS in a different arrangement. I'm not that happy with Marth, Kirby or Mac.

This set of images is for forum members (in the past or present) that I have drawn birthday images in the past. I also am rather partial to these character designs. :p

19LCihu.jpg

Berry has gone on to greater things at college, and it's not often I see him around (he hasn't been on the forum in many years, but social IMs were a regular thing until about a year ago...) I've always drawn Berry with a Zelda-inspired design, although this has changed within the last couple of months (see below).

56QFU8D.jpg

Staryu's design has always been some variant of voluptuous, teasing Peach-like lady. This design is an older-looking design, which I began to apply to a number of characters as they had younger designs back in 2012-13. (This also fits in with a weird, Hyrule Historia-esque timeline that I made up for the events of the forum - strictly non-indicative of real life, but I swear by that timeline being canon. See: my blog.) I never seem to remember what was the descriptor for the hammer member of the Seven Deadly Tools (see: Staryu's blog - "My Attacks!") - so I just keep referring to it as Staryu's Hammer. :p

hhNE0ks.jpg

Spirit's (DJ Mako'Brien) design isn't as well documented as Staryu's or Berry's but then again I only had one design in 2012 or so before this drawing. Ever since Little Mac came into the Smash picture, Spirit has pretty much fallen for him. I naturally obliged. :p A more Mac-like pose is in a later picture below.

Note that this SSB MPL has nothing to do with the one that was developed on the site comments. So far the cast is as large as the N64 game's (12). Probably won't get any bigger than Melee's (25 - 26 if you're being pedantic about Zelda/Sheik).
I'm not going to include notes about movesets as they are just walls of written text.

gWcnjx7.jpg

Character head icons and emblems. Other random select screen HUD things.

rOQurVk.jpg

Four of the starters - SZ, Staryu, Berry and HJ. Can you guess which Smash characters I used as the basis for these poses?

vBAPJXA.jpg

The other four starters - Toadette, Viboolin, Spirit and Timmy. As above - which Smash characters' poses?

mtYoxAb.jpg

Bigger draft page for Timmy and Toblet (the latter is unlockable). I hope you can pick out Toblet's pose comes from ___ ___ _______. :p And yes, Toblet's Luma is too cute.

0hKJAX9.jpg

Berry and Toblet again. This Berry design probably takes more cues from Hyrule Warriors Zelda and even Sophitia from Soul Calibur; but I also added a little influence from a certain Sm4sh newcomer. Might be hard to pick out even here, but the image from above (the four character one with SZ/Staryu/Berry/HJ) MAY help.

@Spirit - I actually don't know when I settled on a roster for SSBMPL -ver. 8B1T- but it would have been last year. Character designs would have started from 2013 or even 2012 though.

@M4E - executive meddling. (duckhunt)

Anyway here's another pic - I'm updating more regularly than ever before! (well, maybe not as frequent as in the beginning of the old topic back pre-2010)

ko6v0PQ.jpg

SuperZambezi, the Hero of the Legacy. Armed with the mysterious skeletal crafted blade Kharon1 - a bastard sword that can split in two and recombine at will - his strength, resolve and deeds (creating the world of MPL being his magnum opus) are legendary. He's designed to be a heavyweight with slow ground speed but moderately mobile in the air, a stronger shield and flinch resistance to minor damage, and decisively powerful but not exceptionally fluid attacks. If you think he looks like Ike, you'd be right - his main inspiration is Ike, down to the general play style, but he has a few few Link traits via his n-air, side and down specials.

The bone motif was an allusion to how SuperZambezi has been associated with Dry Bones. The head band/crown thing was meant to evoke a Dry Bones' upper jaw, while his neck guard - which isn't that visible in this image but it holds the cape in place - represents the lower jaw. What would be the breastplate is simply a plate made from reinforced bone and (probably, I didn't decide this yet) kevlar.

1 Interestingly (and unintentionally), Charon/Kharon is the Greek ferryman who takes the dead across the River Styx. The name Kharon is also sourced (intentionally) from [abbr=karon]カロン[/abbr], Dry Bones' Japanese name, based on [abbr=karakara]からから/カラカラ[/abbr], the Japanese onomatopoeia for rattling).
Note: hover over the Japanese for the furigana i.e. pronunciation.

@LFan - I don't make any promises when it comes to requests. :p
@TermFox - Thanks! I really like your art style too (and I admit that my ability to color is pretty pathetic =_=") - you should make a topic here one day. ;) Looking forward to seeing the second All-Star group colored!

Double image time since I held back on one of them previously

f3FZa4G.jpg

Kinetic, the Psionic Mistress. In the MPL canon (which as I think I previously mentioned, is more convoluted than the Hyrule Historia's account of the Legend of Zelda timeline), Kinetic's history ties rather closely to that of HJ's - granted in that at some point in the canon, the two were spouses and had a child. Despite appearance, Kinetic is a formidable fighter; having been thrust into adventure since the age of seven, and being well versed in material psychokinesis (think Ness's PSI/PK but at a more fundamental level, being able to manipulate matter and not just elements), among other martial skills that include swordplay and ninjutsu, there isn't much that she isn't able to adapt to. Thanks to timeline shenanigans, she is incarnated as a researcher into the biochemical properties of the Emotion Drives, a series of mysterious concoctions that form the centerpiece of her fighting style - much like the Monado Arts, but taken up a notch with effects. She contrasts rapid but weak hits, and surprising physical agility, like Sheik, with slower but more wide ranging and decisive strikes, like Shulk.

If you've followed my art topic, you'll know that the character of Kinetic used to be one of my most drawn characters. This particular design comes from what would be classified the 'Gracelyn Nagamoto' design (again, more backstory behind this, but I'm not bothered to explain - this isn't the topic for it), and was designed to make Kinetic/Gracelyn an intelligent and elegant early-40s age lady in slightly more 'Western' attire (a contrast to her Asian descent and designs previous), but even then, she still wears geta, which are a type of Japanese sandal-like footwear. Her weapons - uchigatana, scythe, and kunai/throwing blades - come from other incarnations of her character; all can be phased in and out of existence as they exist as liquid metal copies of the originals. I hope you realize by now that 'Driven By Emotion' alludes to the Emotion Drives.

Q5RwLRy.jpg

Staryu, the Consort of Love and Beauty. Always a beacon of optimism and undying playfulness, Staryu's flirtatious and bodacious demeanor belies a technical and methodical combatant who isn't afraid to use her assets (figuratively as well as literally speaking) to her advantage. While she wields a hammer (Word of God states it is the Hammer of Disorient, but I've yet to name it) as her primary weapon, she will also use a mix of hand-to-hand (slapping, kicking, butt slamming), seemingly magical powers including Love, Soul, Beauty, Passion, and even draws upon the combined might and deadliness of her Seven Deadly Tools when the time is right. In some ways, her fighting style and character resembles that of Peach - after all, don't you think that hair style looks similar? - but she also, somewhat bizarrely, draws on the Ice Climbers as well - the obvious link is the hammer, but in addition to her characterization, her youthful outlook manifests as a character specific mechanic known as the Youthful Spirit, which allows her to strike seemingly twice as hard/fast/whatever - at low percents.

This design is pretty much an optimized design of the birthday one I've uploaded before; perhaps a bit more modest and proper. The hair is pretty unmistakably Peach's; and for that matter, Staryu was always designed to be a Peach expy which some people (like Spirit) have *affectionately* called Sluṫ Peach (I shouldn't really try to circumvent the censor, but oh well). -eyeroll- Younger designs of Staryu have had minor references to Amy Rose (the hammer could be considered an artifact of that) but I feel that a more mature design works best sticking with a more human (as opposed to anthropomorphic) design on its own. The heels are a probable reference to the Chacha Heels of Mario Party Interactive fame. There is a bit of an innuendo if you look at Staryu's character emblem (or her brooch) closely - it's all in good faith though. Did you know that Love and Beauty was a former Club group here at MPL, and that Staryu was (as I recall) the group leader and creator?

I've never really done much with regard to color in traditional art, and I feel that I should practise in digital art for that first since it's a lot easier to correct mistakes there xP
To be honest, I'm not super confident with color, and I've been lazy and haven't experimented with it enough. I will one day though (and having color will definitely bring my drawings to life)

I can understand how the second set of All-Star characters is taking a while - so many pretty dresses/armor/details. (Have fun when Palutena arrives in the third group. X3)

When i reach about color time, it may give some lazy to me (run to playing game or reading a book temporary).  ::)
Tomorrow i want to relax entire day and start drawing All-Star third set again in day after tomorrow. actually slightly easier than second set and finish sooner.  :)
For Palutena i will decide draw very cute and very beautiful possible for her (because she is 2nd favourite characters in Smash 4). :-D

someday i will show my process art in my topic too.  ;)

Ehehe, don't we all like slacking off at the tougher parts of our art xD
Looking forward to see All-Star 3 ;]

Alright I should have uploaded these last week, but I've been distracted.

S9ZAfHP.jpg

Spirit, the Mach Voltage DJ. A prominent figure in the MPL world's night life, DJ Spirit can be seen mixing the beats and making your night electrifying at his night club 'Swangler'. While not much of a fighter himself, Spirit has trained in self defence in the discipline of boxing - as you do when you move your arms as a necessity in your career - and as a result he has a pretty mighty punch. His true skill though is a literal embodiment of what he hopes his DJing does - through moving around, attacking and using his special moves, Spirit builds up a Voltage Meter, which amplifies his attacks and grants them electrifying strength. You might find it shocking (or not! forced puns suck) to hear that he's inspired by both Little Mac and Pikachu, which seems to be a weird combination. His ground moves and some specials are Little Mac derived, while his air game and other specials inherit the Pokémon's attributes. After all, the air should be embraced, not considered as a vulnerability.

Spirit's initial design didn't come until I think 2012 when Spirit himself true a character who looked pretty similar to the current design now. Not much has changed apart from ditching the tail, and changing the lower limbs to those of a boxer, which could be attributed to when Spirit redesigned his own character last year (I think?) The boxing boots have a Voltage Meter and Static Generator built into them, so quick footwork helps Spirit charge up. His hand tattoo, which is a newly added feature, is another visual clue for the Meter, but also serves as the source of electric power, alongside his bracelet on his left hand (also new - it's a recurring theme. :p). And although he may not look like it, Spirit is in his early to mid 40s with this design.

xC4Q1ck.jpg

This is just a fun little picture featuring SZ, HJ, Berry and Staryu playing Smash Wii U. Berry is using a 3DS, Staryu a Gamecube controller, HJ the Gamepad, and SZ a Wiimote and Nunchuk. Poor SZ, no wonder he lost. I'd be pretty pissed if I had to use Wiimote and Nunchuk now (despite that being my control scheme of choice in Brawl). Staryu is IRL a strong player in Smash, but the scene appears to suggest that HJ won the match. Maybe Staryu's a little tired, or doesn't really care about how the results swing in this instance (she probably won all the previous matches, lol). Berry's just looking a tad sullen, probably because she didn't place as high as she'd hoped.
The Luma and Stitchface Turnip are pillows, if you were wondering. The food available: Star Crisps, Tender Kara Ribs, and a Noble Berry Smoothie.
And yes, this image was an excuse to have characters in less clothing. *cough SZ cough*
...I might push my luck and try drawing a scene with the remaining eight characters in SSBMPL (as current) in an eight player smash. Should be exciting lol

That description is so from you hahaha. The ''forced'' puns and such. Overall an excellent description of all the elements that have been implemented and modified through the last what? 3 years? It'll be about 3 years this summer I believe. Also, I'm happy to see the tattoo is more than just a tattoo now :O

Someone else already mentioned the legs. My excuse is he needs all that bulk and muscle(??) in order to recover and also run like crazy. And stuff. (also his boots store all that static so it needs good resistance to remain charged xD)

Staryu is the poster girl for me drawing scantily, so her being in a bikini isn't unexpected

I can't draw food all that well XD

Image I drew to celebrate the triple MPL site birthday on April 8 (me, Rosie, Accj21)

This is my first proper drawing of Shulk so it was a new experience for me. Kinda lucky that the more intricate parts of his vest/jumper/etc were partially obscured (not to mention the Monado (I)...) He's wearing glasses because Shulk is representing me.

Rosie requested Peach, so I drew Peach as I generally do but in the the Smash dress, and with a ponytail (kinda; hard to tell with the angle). The hibiscus reminds me of her Mii which is why I included it.

Accj21 didn't let me know in time re a character, so he's the non-specific Toad silhouette that Guests have on the site. Eep.

Oh yeah, the cake is a star, and the candles on IT are its eyes. But you knew that. Right?
