What if Mario started as female?

If Mario was female when Donkey Kong or Mario Bros. came out do you think he would have made it as far as he is now?

I think no. What do you think?

The name Mario doesn't fit well for a female character.

But if Mario was female, then I don't think it would have sold well.

I'm sure she would have a different name.

Agreed look at what happened to The Great Giana Sisters.

This is Mario as a girl called Maria:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She would have a sister called Luise. :P

But no. I don't think it would be a success because the point of Mario is to save Princess Peach; the damsel in distress. It wouldn't work very well with Maria because it would have an awkward ending in every game. :P

I actually think it would have sold about the same. You gotta realize that Metroid was revolutionary in that it was the first game series to feature a prominent female protagonist, and now the series is cherished as a classic (yeah, yeah, it has less games and Other M sucked, but still). As long as the gameplay was kept the same, I honestly doubt that it would have strayed from it's popularity.

I feel like this could be a whole sexist thing, where woman don't get enough attention as compared to men. But the original was a simple save the damsel in distress, I'm guessing Nintendo wanted something simple at the start, then expand outward, like with Metroid.

But I can't really imagine what the Mario games would be with a female plumber inn charge, if it started like that with good gameplay, I'm pretty sure it would've sold well though.

I feel this could turn into a sexist topic.

I can't be sure if sales would raise/drop.

In that age it would be sexist (woman saving man) and never would be released therefor destroying all the other Mario games.  Would be cool to see Nintendo make a Mario game with some plot that caused Mario and Peach to switch gender roles. :)  Something original.
This has been another...pointless moment.
