Mario Party 10
*N.B. categories are in spoilers to avoid blocks of text*
In a world both separate to our own and that of the Marioverse, there exists a fantastic nebula known as the Nostalas. Harboring the powers of nostalgia, it creates a realm which is so believable that it transcends the bounds of reality and dreams.
It was at one gathering by the Mario crew where they discussed the possibility of celebrating their history with a good old Mario Party, when a dreamlike figure called Divo, the Lord of Nostalgia, materialized and promised to create a party world to capture the essence of their memories and of Mario Party. It was an offer too good to refuse.
Naturally however, Bowser was never let in on the plan, and when news came in from his troops of this anniversary party, he was full of wrath. "How dare they forget me, the Koopa King, without whom they will not have had memories of such conflict and peace! Let's crush their hopes and take over the Kingdom while we are at it!" Sending three of his trusted minions, Dry Bones, Hammer Bro and Magikoopa, Bowser readied his army for a relentless attack.
Little did he know that his son Junior had chosen to venture out as well, releasing a confused Koopa Kid from the shackles of obscurity, before setting off on his own to the party. What goal does he have... is he defying his father or trying to prove himself?
Oblivious to all this, Mario and crew begin the festivities of their lives. But will their nostalgia be a fatal distraction to the calamity that is sure to unfold? Perhaps a guiding voice from the heavens may save them and Divo...

Divo, Lord of Nostalgia - a mystical denizen of the nostalgic worlds of Nostalas, and somewhat of a prodigy at creating hyper-realistic illusions. He takes the form of a mix between Merlon and Geno, complete with red hair and blue robes, while his personality is probably best described as rather arrogant but genuinely pleased to see people enjoy his creations. He is the primary host of the game and guides the players in Party, Story and Minigame modes.
Etoiline, Ambassador of Dreams - Divo's assistant and ambassador for Nostalas to the Star Spirits. Her specialty is to fill those who experience the power of surreal nostalgia with euphoria and longing, making them repeat their enjoyment of the magical experience. Unlike her boss, she is quite humble and seems rather inclined to attribute much of the success to Divo even if she was the one who really make the experience unforgettable. She awards bonuses in Classic and Gold Rush rule set games, and operates Puzzle Mode, Extras Mode and the Star Galleria. She appears like a feminized Dimentio with Merluvlee color palette, star motif, and head styled on Grace from Mario Golf.
Rosalina - the mother of the stars and keeper of the galaxy. She assists the Mario crew with her space. She also appears as the guide for Galaxy Tour.
Bowser - the demonic Koopa King. Rules over his board and otherwise frightens everyone at his space. It's rumored that you face him after besting Junior, but in what...?
Diddy Kong - hosts Donkey Kong Island. His acrobatic talent allows him to help the crew almost immediately, even if they're on opposite parts of the island.
Jimmy T and Mona - cohost Diamond City. In the off season from micro games, Jimmy T can be seen clubbing while Mona keeps job hopping.
Lumas - support Rosalina and also host Good Egg Galaxy/Rainbow Road. It's rumored that the Lumas have color preferences when helping the crew - e.g. Yellow Luma likes helping the Heroes and Ladies.
Heroes and Ladies
Mario - it ain't a Mario Party without the namesake! Dashing in red and always the go to hero for princess saving or party hosting, Mario's got everything covered for this blockbuster!
Luigi - mean and green, the younger brother has always been there from the start as well! Well trimmed moustache and fear of the paranormal intact, Luigi has his opportunities to shine and show that the party ring is his limelight.
Peach - the archetypal princess just loves parties. Not tea parties. Mario Parties. :p Graceful yet feisty, her charm makes any party so much more alive - but perhaps attracts Browser's attention as well...
Daisy - spunk and sass are just some of this idol's specialties. You know you've got a popular party when another celebrity princess starts digging the tomboyish activities!
Superstar Supporters
Yoshi - being the most loved of playable characters to date, Yoshi is ready to spread happiness in this latest iteration of Mario Party! Perhaps Yoshi eggs could make good 'fireworks'...
Toad - the eternal retainer and diligent helper of the Mushroom Kingdom. A sense of can-do and strength to boot makes organizing any party a breeze! Princess protecting...? Maybe not so much.
Koopa - keeping a stoic composure isn't easy for any minion. But Koopa is different. An unsung hero of board logistics in the earliest games, and a business boomer otherwise. He's got the dough to make the party the best it can be.
Shy Guy - some mysteries are best left unanswered. Especially the mystery of Shy Guy's mask. Of course, no-one sees value in pulling it off - no point creating a tension point between partygoers! And Shy Guy would prefer... not being so shy.
Cunning Crew
Wario - a rival to the man in red, this generally greedy adventurer thou D's up the cast of super regulars, having only missed a stint in Advance. He's ready to steal the show from the others and prove that going for gold is best.
Waluigi - ensemble dark horse, lanky, cranky, and deceptive. It takes all kinds to make a Mario Party... and to be fair, people are starting to accept him these days. Perhaps its his time to climb out of the shadows...
Boo - spooking your party since the beginning, Boo loves causing mischief and unhappy party goers with its coin and star stealing shenanigans. Being playable has tamed it a bit, but it still concocts plans for chaos on a whim.
Koopa Kid - this poor guy has been neglected of late. His appearances in the old days were under the guise of Baby or Mini Bowser but it was in the GCN era where we remember and love his romp. And now his renaissance has arrived.
Wild and Wonderful
Donkey Kong - oh look who's back! The great ape had a big time out since the fifth game, but during that interval he went toe to toe with the nefarious Koopa King and came out on top many times! Such strength will be sure to keep everyone safe!
Toadette - a hiatus of 5 years has done nothing to dampen Toadette's zeal for partying and otherwise having a blast. She may not be as homicidal as everyone thinks, but surely she's got secrets planned ahead...?
Birdo - a bit of a controversy in the Marioverse, but hey, who doesn't love controversy?! The crew certainly don't mind a gender-disputed egg spitting dinosaur. Neither should you. Just enjoy the party okay? :p
Blooper - inking everything on sight is something Blooper's learning to control. Floating in midair it is mastering. Being accepted by the fan base as a viable character might prove too big of a fish to fry though...
Formidable Foes
Dry Bones - there's no bones about it, the undead love partying as much as we do. Dry Bones probably needs a throat lozenge for all the squawking it'll do as it parties hard - in the meanwhile keep its funny bone active.
Hammer Bro - the elite of the Koopa Troop still find a day at a party the most relaxing thing after pay raises (if they get paid that is). Certainly more interesting than being a generic mini game obstacle. Jo-jo!
Magikoopa - this wily wizard decided it would be fun to join Bowser's latest conquest of the Mini-Stars. Sadly beating his boss/nurse child/protege in mini games has kindled a desire to join the party crew for real this time. Those senile wizards!
Bowser Jr (new) - following in his fathers footsteps doesn't have to strictly mean 'cause havoc on the board when called for'. He's decided that causing havo as an actual party player would do just fine. And besides he knows the ins and outs of Mario Party. He better do his dad proud!
To fit the theme of 10 and nostalgia, the boards have been crafted from the deepest memories of Mario and crew. The last two boards are unlockable.
-Mushroom Kingdom and World-
Harking to the days of the firsts few games (1, Lost Levels, 3) this board is simple but still full of surprises to keep players guessing. Traverse through grassland, ocean, underground, sky and much more in a familiar land! Beware warp zones that take you to places unexpected! Use the Magic Construction item to create new terrain within worlds, and uncover both new warp routes and hidden secrets (ie hidden blocks). You might also uncover blocks when using the Destruction items to remove pathways.
-Sarasaland-
A land with eastern influenced architecture, and Daisy's home kingdom. The unique feature of this board is that it is compact but spans three levels that share pathways but whose space and event layout can vary significantly. The Construction/Destruction items change all three levels paths simultaneously. Expect to see some events involving Sea Pop, Sky Pop, and Superball Flowers. Classic Rules.
-Dinosaur Land and Yoshi's Island-
Tropical paradises in their own right, the idyllic settings of the SMW games provide great places to explore secrets and discover new routes. The Construction/Destruction items only work when players enter the Forest of Illusion and the Valley of Bowser, but at those times they can cause great grief in your rivals! The style in this game is Race to the Finish, starting from the final world of Yoshi's Island, through to completing Dinosaur Land as per SMW.
-All Cup Tour-
While not explicitly 16 full courses back to back, this board still provides a lot of twists and turns with intricate connections between sections of each track to make it feel like a genuine Mario Kart race. The Construction/Destruction items serve to make certain connections lengthier or shorter, or create or destroy new connections. Items available become both more powerful and cheaper as you fall further behind your rivals. Race to the Finish style.
-Delfino Plaza-
Another tropical locale filled with many nooks and crannies. Yoshis and fruits abound can help uncover the mysteries of the plaza while careful use of the Construction/Destruction items can create FLUDD pathways or seal others with graffiti. This board uses a Mission style rule set which still goes by turns but is based on achieving a certain number of quests to earn Shine Sprites.
-Diamond City-
The enterprising Wario makes his masterpieces of microgames in this well to do township, and despite his greed somehow still has his cronies/employees stay with him. Different sections of the board have themes based on Wario's employees, and there are many many mini game spaces in this board. Construction items allow for more exploration in each theme and between themes while Destruction items make the action fast and frantic. Mission style - every turn you get points for consecutive minigame winning chains, so do your best to win them all!
-Donkey Kong Island-
The intense jungle beat pounds into your minds as you go on a perilous quest to harvest bananas from the island and avoid Kremling attacks. Winding pathways that seem to connect air, ground, sea and cave seamlessly make this board highly confusing but it is surprisingly easy to find your way at the goal - even if you didn't want to be there. This board allows players to use the Construction item to place banana tally barriers to prevent others from accessing certain ares unless they have over - or UNDER - a certain number of bananas. But they are just as easily destroyed. Utilize animal buddies and blast barrels to maneuver quickly and cash in with the most bananas to win! Gold Rush style - collect as many bananas before arriving at the goal.
-Gold Mushroom Kingdom-
Everything is coated in glorious gold! This is essentially like the first board, but with themes drawing from the NSMB and SM3D series games to make a vibrant and chaotic stage on which to collect as many coins as conceivably possible before hitting the turn limit. Use the Gold items to boost the coin earnings, and clever use of Star and Moon Coins to warp and save coin status will lead to victory. Construction and deconstruction items both help with the gold harvest. Gold Rush style with turn limit.
-Bowser Castle and Dark World-
Unlockable through story. Obviously fed up that the Mario crew forgot about his role in their history, Browser went overboard and created this conglomerate of his castles and the dark world of SMB3, complete with army units and airships. A huge stage where Construction and Destruction of Tanks and Airships provides some alteration in route but ultimately provides simple alternatives. This board is quite evil for destroying your coins or other progress, be careful! Available to play all four objective rules (Classic, Race, Mission, Gold Rush).
-Rainbow Road and Good Egg Galaxy-
Unlockable from Extras. The final frontier of space is no match for the stellar aspirations of the Mario crew! Planet hopping and rainbow cruising are both pastimes out of this world, but uniting them has never been such a dream born! This board excels in construction/destruction item use, where whole planets and planetary systems can be created or destroyed in a flash. The rainbow road provides a constant network even if interplanetary Launch Stars are broken or inaccessible, but it too can be manipulated nearly to heart's content. Rosalina's watch over here allows higher chances of her blessing. Available to play all four objective rule sets.
The boards in Party Mode have different objectives. Briefly, they are:
Classic - stars and coins, nothing too different.
Race to the Finish - much like MP3DS, get to the end first. There are usually restrictions on mushroom items in this mode. Collecting coins and ministars increases your dice's size (e.g. from 1-3 with 0 coins to 1-10 with 50) and total distance moved respectively.
Mission - something other than Stars/ministars/coins is the ultimate objective. However those three stats usually help in raising the board objective stat. Has a turn limit similar to Classic.
Gold Rush - a modified variation of Car Mode in MP9. Players amass coins (or bananas in one instance) and ministars before arriving at checkpoints and eventually a goal. Turn limits are generally enforced for each section of the board.
All party modes are playable with 2-4 players.
Story mode sees you run through the first nine boards with Mushroom World/Kingdom always first and Bowser Castle/Dark World last. The unlockable characters will appear at least once each run through, though one of the three will challenge you a second time. Bowser Jr is your rival on boards 3,6,9 and you must beat him to progress. There is a boss battle but it is against Bowser and only after completing the 9th board.
Puzzle
Not Mush Room - if you've ever played Rush Hour/Traffic Jam or Klotski, this is pretty much it. If you don't, essentially you have to get a certain block out of the field by moving other blocks to open a path for the special block to escape. Touch controls, 50 levels.
Space Innovators - imagine Dr Mario in 3D but with matching combos like Wario's Woods (squares, diagonals, and orthogonals). A/B to rotate left/right, X/Y to rotate up/down, and shoulders to spin view. Z shoulders to see levels of blocks more closely, and moving GamePad/flicking screen also adjusts view. This game is slow to accommodate the initial difficulty of working in three dimensions but will pick up rather quickly, so be careful!
Extras
Bowser Bowling - Star Carnival Bowling was so last console. Throw in some items like Ice Blue Shells, Fireballs and Thwomp obstacles to mess with your rivals' frames!
Tetris Tag - a co-op Tetris game but each round everyone is stuck with just one piece type! Aim to clear the required number of rows!
Galaxy Tour - experience the thrill of space travel and grab a few ministars to take back!
Mirror World - a strange domain where the power of the GamePad transforms the rules at any turn! Exclusively features Control Minigames.
The WiiU gamepad provides a unique interface to the Mario Party world. Not only do players enjoy their interactions on the board and in minigames, as the series is always well known for; you can now directly manipulate the action with the touch interface!
Some of the features exclusive to the holder of the GamePad include:
-During turns, if you have special Magic Construction items, you can use them to draw in new paths on the board which will then be rendered real time. Spaces allocated aren't necessarily what you might expect - there could be lots of red spaces, or item, or Bowser! Magic Destruction items do much the same thing, though only branching pathways are allowed to be removed.
-The effects of some items can be amplified by either tapping your player in time with the item use (hey! Action Commands!) or by drawing a shape on screen (Art Attack!).
-Tap other players in the board when it isn't their turn to elicit some funny reactions from them. Perhaps even make them drop a coin or get moved by a space!
-Overall board feature interactivity is increased. Say hi to Koopas on the loop, Goomba managers, even the buildings themselves!
-Minigames are where it's at! In addition to classic mini games like 4 Player and so on, there are new games specifically designed for GamePads! As up to two GamePads are compatible with Mario Party 10, you can have GP 1vsRivals, GP 2vs2, and GP 1vs1vs2!
-There's also the super cool Control minigame category, where the player with the GamePad can control obstacles or victory conditions while the other players battle it out! Only suitable for 4 players sadly. If you have another friend, you can also enable 5P control with your friend being the game master and you duking it out with the others too!
-True puzzle sensitivity with a DS like interface for Puzzle Minigames.
-Bring AR cards into contact with the GamePad and watch as special unlockables come to life! All AR cards come with a bonus to your overall Star and Coin tally, so don't be afraid to collect and trade!
Common spaces appear on practically every board regardless of ruleset:

Revolution - everyone now has an equal number of coins/bananas/ministars!
Bonus - get a boost simply by passing over, but land on it and you get even more!
Challenge - winner of next minigame gets a 3x boost to winnings
Items can be generally categorized as Movement, Attacking, Defensive, or Special.
Movement items are classic things like Mushrooms, Magic Lamps, Warp Pipes and items thrown on the board that knock opponents off course. Mushrooms are removed from Race rules since they would make whoever has them win far too easily.
Attacking items steal coins from other players (like Bullet Bill, steal 30 coins if you run past a rival using this) or make rivals lose their coins or items (like Spiny Shell, makes players who land on where this is set lose half their coins). Items like Battle Badges (start a duel minigame) also count in this category, as does the Boo Portrait (summon Pink Boo to steal).
Defensive items either protect from attacks (including coin stealing from Pink Boos, example item is the Poltergust 3000) or allow players to passively collect coins (e.g. Heart absorbs attacks and converts 25% coin damage received into coins earned).
Special items include the Construction and Destruction Items (with different names on each board), Bowser and Rosalina pendants that create another one of their spaces, and items that can affect how the star operates - e.g. Platinum Star changes star values of board stars to double (including ministars) for a few turns.
Free For All (FFA) - minigames where everyone is for themselves. Some of these minigames also qualify as Duel Minigames.
e.g. Gold and Pilfer - the aim is for each player to use Gold Flowers and make their opponents drop coins/bags/chests to pick up, but beware anti coins that will make you drop some of your earnings and stun you.
1 vs Rivals (1vR) - minigames that pit one player against at least two others.
e.g. The Goom, The Pa and the Ugly - the solo player operates a Giant Goomba mech and tries to jump on and trample his/her rivals. The rivals have two options to defeat the solo player; last until the end of the round, or ground pound the mech enough times to break it. To make things harder, Goombas fall into the arena at random and at the solo player's will, and they stun team players if they're hit - though using Goombas as trampolines to go for a ground pound is a good strategy.
2 vs 2 (2v2) - minigames where two teams of two duke it out. Like you'd expect, some of these minigames are adapted to be Duel Minigames. Note that many of these minigames have varying controls between the two players on a team.
e.g. Disasterly Duos - if you remember Destruction Duet, this is going along the same principle... at first. Until you realize that the more you bash the Bowser statue, stuff starts falling into both teams' areas. Like Bob-ombs. And falling spikes. The goal is still to destroy your team's statue first, but you'll also have to watch your health meter (three each) since if you get hit by enough debris/obstacles, you'll be out and cripple your team. Also beware booby trapped areas of your own statue. :p
Battle - minigames that are essentially FFA but distribute payout based on the pot and rankings.
e.g. Volley Folly - 4-player Dead Man's Volley of LOZ fame, with Koopa Shells at first, then Bob-ombs, then Bullet Bills... You get some leniency in earlier rounds and speeds since Koopa Shells deal little damage. Bullet Bills on the other hand knock you out instantly. Items can spawn on the arena randomly for collection - Mushrooms restore some health, Peppers increase power, and Syrups increase your timing allowance.
GamePad 1 vs Rivals (GP1vR) - like Mic Minigames of old, this mode pits someone with the GamePad against everyone else with Wiimotes. While the GamePad offers some advantages regarding viewpoints and direct interaction, usually their mission is harder, or their actions less decisive.
e.g. Dance Dance Re-boo-lution - the solo player makes a dance routine similar to Move to the Music or Mario Bandstand by swiping the screen or tapping it, and the team players respond with timed movements of their own. Whenever all the team succeeds, the solo player must continue their routing a la The Beat Goes On making their routine longer and longer - however the team only needs to repeat the last stanza added. The solo player has only one chance to miss before they lose, so be careful.
GamePad 2 vs 2 (GP2v2) - needs two GamePads. Essentially the Wiimote players have to achieve a goal with assistance from the GamePad players.
e.g. Screw Drivers - the Wiimote players race against each other as per any racing minigame in the series, but the GamePad players have a mission not dissimilar to Silly Screws but with touch and shoulder button controls added in to make it a bit tougher - optimizing the inner gears of the screwdriver racers is the key to winning the race for your partner.
GamePad 1 vs 1 vs 2 (GP1v1v2) - needs two GamePads. Players with GamePads have to battle on two fronts - against the other GamePad player and the Wiimote team - while the team's main goal is to survive and possibly mess around with the GamePad players' plans. It is possible for the team and one GamePad player to joint win, but never possible for both GamePad players to joint win.
e.g. Minis Mark Again - the GamePad players have to direct their Mini toys to a certain area and then use said Minis to attack the opposition as well as the team. The team starts with 3 health each but any stray collision with a Mini costs them health. A GamePad player loses if 5 or their Minis gets attacked in any form, from either the team's attacks or the opposing GamePad player.
Control - a special mini game type only found in Mirror World, where one player controls the intensity of the action in game while the other players fight for victory. A fifth person may control the GamePad in this mode and let four Wiimote players get involved.
e.g. A Cut Above - sorta like one of the Wii Sports Resort swordplay games or Clean Cut. The GamePad player determines how the objects presented should be cut, and for how long they can last before disappearing. Then the Wiimote players must use their pointer to trace the cut line like in Crazy Cutters, while avoiding cutting things like Bob-ombs the GP player may send at them.
Bowser - a typical Bowser styled mini game where failure equals pain.
e.g. One Few Over The Koopa's Nest - players control paragliders hurtling toward a fortress guarded by shell cannons. Avoid the shots and try to land safely on the rooftop, but beware fire breath and spiny shells that WILL take you down.
Rosalina - much like Donkey Kong mini games of old. May award Ministars instead of coins.
e.g. Rosalina's Nice World - a slippy slidy arena filled with coins/mini stars but also lots of pitfalls. Collect anything you can and knock your rivals down to stop them from doing the same!
There's also a boss battle with Bowser, but what could it be...?
Similar to unlocking things in both the early MPs and games like MP7/8, you can use accumulated coins, mini stars/bananas and stars to purchase various items and use them. By the way, like MP1 you have a bank that can be upgraded. :p
