Title: PlayStation 4
Post by: Colyton on February 01, 2013, 06:16:09 PM
Quote
Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.

Sony is set to reveal its next PlayStation on Wednesday February 20th at an event dubbed ‘see the future’. Sony Computer Entertainment released a teaser video last night to announce the event. Below, our sources revealed what to expect from PlayStation 4.

The controller

Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

The launch

We’re told that PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014, the delay attributed to the complexities involved in European distribution. Alongside the console, Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral, which remains compatible with the PlayStation Move controller. Move will be available at launch, but it’s not clear yet whether it will be bundled with the hardware.

I must say that I'm pretty excited to see how this will turn out! I can't wait for February 20th. C:

Nice. If the article is true, then the PS4 is to be more powerful than the next Xbox 360. Wow. But really, I wonder how much PS4 will retail for, because Sony keeps posting losses. I'm certain they will still sell the PS4 at a loss. It's nice to see them unveiling this, but I thought they still want to let Microsoft make a move first. Or maybe they are, in which they're waiting for the next Xbox to come out for release before the PS4.

I got an email with that Playstation2013 video. I'm kind of excited to see what'll be showed, which'll probably be the PS4. :P

That's gonna be a good week, considering I'm getting Revengeance the day before. =)

What do you guys expect to be announced specifically? Do you think they will show any games? The controller? Dare I say it, a release and price?
Title: Re: Playstation 4
Post by: Vipsoccermaster on February 08, 2013, 01:07:03 AM
I think they will show the system and the controller. Maybe a trailer of a game for it, too. The release and price will probably come at E3 2013, as they did it with PS3 in E3 2006 and Vita in E3 2011. There's also possibilities of PS4 blocking used games, but I doubt Sony will do that.

All what Vip said, I guess showing the console is the minimum they can do. Probably give precisions on features it will have such as the PS Home, if it has something similar.

Do you guys think it will be backwards compatible with the PS3? This is an important factor for me, but I wouldn't count on it as they took out PS2 support on the PS3 pretty early on.

I don't think so. I doubt Sony is that big on backwards compatibility, so they'll most likely make PS4 not to have any with PS3. This will upset a lot of people who have a PS3, as they would need to keep the PS3 for the PS3 games. This is one thing they might do to keep costs down.

I honestly think the PS4 will be backwards compatible, why woudn't they? Plus, it'll help if the PS4 doesn't have a huge library right from the start.

The PlayStation 4 controller has been leaked. It's only a prototype, though. It looks okay, and the touch-screen is really small. I wonder what does the light on top do?

If it really is the PS4 controller, it is basically the same as the PS3's with only a screen added. I don't have any problem with the model.

Lol, that would be true if Sony does implement that.

Also, there are rumors that PS4 will allow streaming for PlayStation 3 games. Here's one such source. (http://www.neowin.net/news/rumor-ps4-to-offer-streaming-access-to-ps3-games)

Hah, it seems like Sony's taking the "Sega does what Nintendon't" approach. It's a shame they didn't watch the entire Nintendo Direct to find out that most of the games are about Luigi!

So, about the controller, it looks similar to the PS3 controller, but it appears to be more bulky, and it has a screen.

Quote from: Kotaku
Source: The PS4 Will Be Out This November, And You'll Be Able To Control It With Your Phone

A reliable Kotaku source has informed us that the PlayStation 4, codenamed Orbis, will be out this November in the United States.

Our source—the same reliable source who back in early 2012 told us the codename for Sony's next console and the codename for Microsoft's next console—tells us that there are two models planned for the new machine, and that pricing won't be announced until later this year, possibly around E3. The current plan, our source says, is to release them at $429 and $529, but that could change.

Although nothing is confirmed just yet, as we get closer and closer to the release of Orbis, which Sony is expected to officially announce during an event in New York City tomorrow night, we continue to hear more details about what will ship with the new hardware. Back in January, we learned about the PS4's new controller, which has a small touchpad in the center, and the fancy new user account system that will allow multiple people to log into one console at the same time.

New information revealed by our source suggests that on top of all that, you'll also be able to control the PS4 remotely from your tablet or smartphone. You'll be able to use a mobile device to chat with your PS4 friends or buy games which are then automatically downloaded to your machine, our source says.

Orbis is also following the path first set by Xbox Live: our source says "most" of the PS4's online features will require a premium subscription to use. Sony's new online service will be called PlayStation World, our source says, replacing PlayStation Plus.

(No word on whether that's related to PlayStation Cloud, domains for which Sony registered on Friday. We couldn't find any domains or trademarks registered for PlayStation World.)

Some other tidbits: our source says that every PS4 will come with a PlayStation Eye; that a new spectating feature will let you watch other friends play games from your console's dashboard, even when you don't own the game they're playing; and that the console will support local network play via Vita.

Current photos of the PS4 controller are inconsistent with some of the information we've received. For example, we've seen Orbis documentation that details a "share" button, and Edge magazine corroborated that not long after we reported it, saying that the controller's share button will record gameplay and allow you to share it online.

This controller doesn't seem to have a share button at all, although it's possible that the functionality has been wrapped into the all-purpose PlayStation button, which is a carryover from the PS3's DualShock controller.

Pictures of the prototype controller also match up with what we've reported about the touch pad and LED light, which you can see on the controller's back in the photos we've received.

We've reached out to Sony for comment and will update should they get back to us. Sony is expected to announce their new console tomorrow night at an event in New York City. Kotaku will be there reporting news as it happens.
Source (http://kotaku.com/5985356/source-the-ps4-will-be-out-this-november-and-youll-be-able-to-control-it-with-your-phone)

Kotaku reveals interesting information regarding the PlayStation 4. Apparently, the release could be in November 2013 and could retail at somewhere between $430-$530. Tomorrow is the big day, for which Sony will reveal the PlayStation 4 and controller, so we just have to wait and see what happens then.

I can just feel the excitement bursting from this topic.

Anyway, I watched most of the conference (was not expecting 2+ hours) and I have to say I'm excited and interested to see what else will come from the PS4 (which is official now). A lot of cool features, but those features will come at a cost. And I probably won't be willing to pay that cost. As I predicted, no backwards compatibility, but they did say that games from PS1, PS2, and PS3 will come through the Gaikai streaming service at some point.

It's hard to tell considering how much we've seen. But the main reason why I don't buy Sony consoles is that they're too damn expensive.

I watched the whole conference and it was pretty good. The PS4 is gonna be a powerhouse console. Seeing as it's coming this holiday season (unless it's delayed), I'll pass on the Wii U for the PS4. Of course, that's assuming Microsoft isn't releasing the 720 near the same timeframe.

Not at all. I paid $300 or so for my Xbox last year and I nearly choked at the price. PS3 was $250. I'm not even going to entertain the thought of something that's $500.
Title: Re: Playstation 4
Post by: Colyton on February 21, 2013, 04:51:57 PM
$429 is the most I'm paying and even there it's too damn high for my liking. I could pay a great Laptop with that money. The price of a console shouldn't be over $300 imo. Something tells me I'll have to work hard this summer.
Title: Re: Playstation 4
Post by: DeadlyxImpulse on February 26, 2013, 02:05:08 PM
$500 is way too much, no console is worth that much in my eyes. As much as i want it I'm not going to waste my money on this.

But on the bright side, at least they decide to make the controller look like the PS2 version. I can't stand the PS3 controller, it is so loose and fragile.

According to this (http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/467668/20130515/playstation-4-release-date-delay-launch-specs.htm#.UZPx5cpLrTo), Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will definitely launch this year, for all territories, and no delays.

That's great news, seeing how they want to have it out by Holiday 2013. Although I'm not 100% sure at the moment for Europe.

Wow. Just wow. Sony originally (http://ps4daily.com/2013/06/sony-changed-playstation-4-drm-policy-after-xbox-one-outrage/) were going to go in-line in what Microsoft did, but after the Microsoft outrage, Sony waited and quietly changed their policies.

Sony was smart in waiting what Microsoft was going to do. However, if both companies both went with what they originally planned to, I could see a huge burst of anger all over the internet, from the gamers. If that happened, I could see everyone flocking to Nintendo or something.

Well, if Microsoft wants to release it sooner, then they have like the first 14 days of November to do so (they still announced a November 2013 release), and that's a bit tight for them. Sadly, though, I don't think it will be of much impact whenever they release Xbox One in November 2013. The PlayStation 4 will be available in 32 countries, while the Xbox One will only be available in 13 countries at launch. It seems to me that Microsoft is going to have trouble selling the console, thanks to Microsoft's reputation it had throughout the year of 2013. Plus, with $500, that makes it harder.

Indeed. But Sony and Microsoft still want to push social and other media integrations into their consoles, where Nintendo pushes on games. All companies push for games, but what I mean for Sony and Microsoft just want to keep pushing socialization and media.

And Nintendo isn't pushing for the social aspect either? *cough*Miiverse*cough*, Miiverse is leaps and bounds better than anything Xbox Live and PSN has so far. At least on 360 and PS3, haven't been keeping up with next-Gen in that area.

Not surprising. Console gaming isn't nearly as popular in Japan as it used to be. There is a reason why Nintendo has been focusing on its handheld side. I wouldn't say console gaming is dying by any means but handheld gaming has been on an uptick over in Japan for a while now.

However, I always find it stupid when consoles don't have universal launches. Hated waiting months for the Vita to come stateside (it came out in Japan a good 3-4 months beforehand) and i'm sure a lot of Japanese gamers will hate waiting for the PS4 to come out. All Sony is doing is pissing off the hardcore consumer base at the end of the day although the hardcores are the ones who will continue to buy despite being angry.

Wow those all kind of suck and make the PS4 less apealing to me. If you can't share the video to anywhere else but their social network what's the point? In fact I'm kind of shocked there's no youtube sharing. Also, the music thing isn't that big of deal but time to time I would listen to music on my 360 while gaming (you can rip cd's, and some mp3 players can connect to it and play music through it). Kind of just stupid stuff for them to not implement imo.

I usually played music through my headset but yeah that's stupid there's no playing MP3 music. Though I understand no uploading to youtube, youtube would be a clusterF*** if people could upload anything they played in the last 15 minutes.

I already have my card hooked up to my PSN (as of a week ago) so it's not a huge difference to me, but if I'm gonna DL a game anyway and I can get $5 on the PSN with my purchase, I won't complain.

I just don't like to keep my info online especially after the whole PSN hacking scare. I know their security is a lot better but I'd rather be safe.

It wasn't really a choice I wanted to make lol. I wanted a $5 and a $10 PSN card but they don't make $5 ones so I bit the bullet and added my info.

I don't think i'm gonna have time to play it until Sunday D:

Oh well, I took my vacation so I can game all week. Or play Animal Crossing instead.

I find midnight launches crazy but I also have to be at work at 5am everyday so I rarely stay up past 10pm.

Only midnight launches i've gone to are Modern Warfare 3 & Smash Bros. Brawl. As i've gotten older I have prioritized sleep over getting something "first".

The atmosphere at the events are always cool though. I wouldn't rule out going to another one in the future.

Yeah, I'm debating going to get my Zelda 3DSXL at midnight just because it happens to release the same day as the Xbox One, but I don't really need to. Especially with school the next day and such.

Its just so much easier to pick it up the next day.

Especially when you have work since its not like you're going to be playing it anyhow.

I helped out at the MW3 midnight and I waited in line to pick up my MGS HD collection lol

I won't be getting one tomorrow or really any time soon. Though I have one on my holiday list so I might get one? It probably own't happen though.

So i'm gonna do the buy 2 get 1 free deal on Target (or Amazon if Target is sold out of what I want) and i'm not sure what games to get.

I already have Knack so I was thinking:

Killzone: Shadow Fall, Call of Duty Ghosts and Madden 25.

Not really sold on Madden but I just don't see anything else that is super appealing. Maybe Need for Speed?

I'm not one to pass up a free game though and since i'm on my vacation I figure i'd beat Killzone & Knack so I oughta just pay 60 more dollars for 2 more games.

Maybe i'll get LEGO Marvel.

Yeah I haven't gotten Black Flag yet and I got burnt out after Assassin's Creed 2. :P

Someday I'll finish Brotherhood, Revelations, and 3, and Black Flag too I guess, oh and the HD re-release of Liberation...

They're too many Assassin's Creed games. o.o

I think I might have actually went and got a PS4 if it was backwards compatible. There are so many PS3 games I want to play and it would have been the perfect thing to have as new games come in.

Oh well.

PlayStation 4 has launched in North America! Seems like some of you are waiting it out.

I've heard reports of PlayStation 4 consoles being bricked...

That is a shame, almost like a repeat of the RROD from Microsoft's Xbox 360 in 2005.

This is exactly me, for all I care they should've made a different model that is backwards compatible. I would've spent more money on it.

@Tyler well throw one at me.

For the amount of money it would've cost you could buy a PS3.

How many people would actually pay $200+ for backwards compatibility? Not nearly as many to justify creating another SKU and to do the R&D for it.

All I know is that if the PS4 was backwards compatible, I would have held off on getting the PS3 a couple months ago and seriously considered getting the PS4 at launch.

Not disagreeing but you have to look long term. Sure people want to play PS3 games now but will they in 2 years? Most people won't.

Anyhow i've played about 3 hours on the system and my initial impressions are that its really neat. Not blown away by anything but it is what I expected from it. Definitely not  disappointed.

It's been announced by Andrew House that the PlayStation 4 has sold 4.2 million units as of Saturday, December 28, 2013.

Holy damn. They will definitely hit the 5 million mark by Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

According to this (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/03/03/ps4-hits-6-million-ushers-in-new-era-of-social-gameplay/#sf2031837), they sold six million to consumers already, as of Sunday, March 2, 2014. They forecast five million by Tuesday, April 1, 2014, and they already met that target. I wonder if Sony can manage seven million by then? Seems very likely that they will.

Congrats to Sony.
