Yeah, haven't you seen my tier list way back in page 1? I plan on at least getting Kirby (perhaps for free), Pikachu, and Luigi for Christmas, then the almighty King Dedede, Jigglypuff, and Rosalina & Luma when they come out. I want even more, but money is finite, so that's why I made tiers for the Smash Bros. cast in the first place.
Well, you just edited it, so. It'll be hard trying to get an amiibo for free, good luck with that.
That edit was technically more of an update to fit the Secret Characters plus Mewtwo; as for the free figure, I had heard somewhere that Toys R'Us is giving a free amiibo when you purchase Super Smash Bros. for WiiU.

Some information, pictures, and which amiibo figures are compatible for which games! Be careful, some amiibo figures are limited-time only! If you're a collector of sorts, then you better get your hands on them! Nintendo doesn't say which figures are limited-time only, so you better get cracking on shelling out your $$$ for those figures!

Quote from: Satoru Iwata
With “Super Smash Bros. for Wii U,” we will launch “amiibo,” a new category of products for us. amiibo is a series of figures equipped with NFC that can connect with video games. It is not only one example of Nintendo’s IP utilization strategy but it also enables us to achieve multiple things at the same time.

Firstly, amiibo figures are offered at an affordable price range when compared to packaged video game software. Even people who may not be able to purchase software frequently may be able to afford to purchase character figures one by one. This could spark interest in the game or contribute to maintaining use rates of our video game platforms.
The amiibo figure lineup for “Super Smash Bros.” will continue to be released even after this year-end sales season, and we hope that this will help to update store shelves. As store shelf space is limited, some amiibo will remain stocked on the shelves as staple choices while some will be limited-time offers which will cede their positions to new ones once they are sold out.
With these offerings, I believe the Nintendo characters lined up on shelves, which usually only contain standard-sized boxes, will have an outstanding presence, and this means a lot to us.
Even though amiibo will be compatible only with Wii U at the launch, we are proactively making progress on Nintendo 3DS compatibility. As the New Nintendo 3DS handheld contains an NFC reader/writer, it will be able to support amiibo after a software update. The Nintendo 3DS platform will also be able to do the same via an external NFC reader/writer, which is scheduled to be launched in 2015. With these offerings, we will increase the amiibo compatible software lineup for Nintendo 3DS.
amiibo is a new category of products for us that creates a new kind of value by being supported by multiple titles. We hope that by making amiibo figures compatible with multiple titles, consumers will be happy to carry the figures with them and will be eager to try them with new software.

In “Super Smash Bros. for Wii U,” amiibo is an in-game character that you battle and train, and it can play with you as your buddy or even your opponent.
Of course, amiibo support will vary depending on the title and this is only an example of the possibilities. We will offer further instances of amiibo compatability with various products next year.

Spoiler: Image (click to show/hide)

As shown here, it is confirmed that the initial figurines Mario, Yoshi, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong are compatible with Mario Kart 8. Link is the only one compatible with Hyrule Warriors. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will have all playable fighters compatible (unknown for Mewtwo, but likely).

Mario, Princess Peach, and Yoshi amiibo figurines will be compatible for Mario Party 10. Yoshi will be compatible for Yoshi's Woolly World. In this sense, Yoshi has the most games compatible for its figurine at this time: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi's Woolly World.

This screen implies that we'll get the Pikmin and Tom Nook figurines, plus different poses for other characters, too.

Third batch of amiibo figurines revealed! For Japan, though. No word on when this batch of amiibo figurines will come to North America and Europe.

Shulk, Sonic, and Mega Man due out in February 2015. The rest are due on Thursday, January 22, 2015.

Also, please be careful on how you use your amiibo figurines. You do not want to overwrite data stored in it by accident!

If you use a single Amiibo on Smash Bros. and another game that also treats them as save files, you'll have to erase. Amiibo that support read/write can only be used with one read/write game at a time. Erase before using on another game.

Okay so at least Smash won't be the only game to fully use amiibo's other than simply unlocking stuff heh.

I mean - for MK8 and Hyrule Warriors you just unlock something in-game, but not really store/create any data on the amiibo itself, right? Be a waste for those two games.

It does make me wonder how the other games in which will use a much greater amiibo support would utilize them though...

Currently, only Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has the read/write function. Not a problem at this time. All other games like Mario Kart and Hyrule Warriors are read-only.

Correct.

Also, the Shulk amiibo figurine is exclusive to GameStop. Not surprising, since Xenoblade Chronicles was exclusive to GameStop.

Fun fact: The name "amiibo" comes from a Japanese expression for well-meaning friendship. I'd also like to point out that a variety of languages also use the "ami(i)" prefix to mean friend, as in amigo (Spanish) and ami(e) (French) So, you can think of an amiibo as a little "buddy." ;)

That totally makes sense seeing as how the amiibo's work in Smash Bros.
Perhaps in later games they also will work both-ways in they'll also act as another player as well.

...we'll have to see in time though. :P

I just thought of something else-What if there was a way to register amiibo on Club Nintendo?

It's confirmed that the amiibo figures Marth, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer have all been discontinued.

EDIT: David Young from Nintendo says they are not discontinued.

EDIT 2: They are actually discontinued after the initial shipment.
