Yeah from what I've seen of the maps they all seem very linear.
Well, not as linear as other games.
I see what you did there XD
I don't get it.

Oh yes. MP10 did not have the best maps. Or skill factor. Or characters. Or pretty much anything TBH.  :P

Getting back on topic, Mario Party 4 was basically a transition of the N64's way of loading boards(the boards on those were pre-rendered) to using actual models. That's why the metal path was there, I guess.

So that explains why there's metal paths in Mario Party 4? Makes sense as it was when the developers were getting out of N64 Mario Party times. I think those had the paths as well. I liked the paths, they were fine to me.

Mario Party 4 wasn't my favorite GCN Mario Party as I liked 6 and 7 more but I liked it. The last one before DS to have the traditional items. The mini-games were fun but I didn't care much for the Story mode, it made the character presents tedious to collect. I like it was the first one to introduce team mode.

The N64 versions gave the impression that the background was literally painted into the game IMO. It actually looked sorta cool.  :-D

Nintendo was still getting used to using fully 3D polynomial scenery in MP4, which as you said is probably the reason they only used metal paths and scenery was more sparse.

Thinking of replaying this game since I haven't touched it in a while.

Also, Mario Party 4's story mode. I've talked about it before in here, but not in depth. It will be the most monotonous thing you will ever do in a video game. The "story" of Mario Party 4 is that it's all of the playable character's birthday's(What a huge coincidence, huh?) and Toad and a few others made the party cube. When you do Story mode and complete a board, you get a present from the board host. The thing is, it's different for all the characters, so you have to play at least 48 15-Turn games and a special minigame at the end of each board to get all of the presents. This is the most headache inducing thing I've ever encountered in a video game. Why couldn't you just get all the presents for each character after beating a board is beyond me.

The paths and scenery were nice in the first 4 games. Gave them a painting-like effect to them that made them nice to look at. Though Mario Party 4 a little less so for some reason I still liked the boards. It felt like the Mario Party 4 boards came right out of the hosts imaginations as they created them.

Yeah that makes prefect sense.

I agree they made the Story Mode very tedious if you wanted to collect all the presents. I disliked doing it with every character and I was upset when my Gamecube memory card corrupted, erasing all my efforts. I usually enjoy 100% completion but I was annoyed with Mario Party 4's story mode after awhile. I found Luigi's present descriptions amusing at least. I think they could have improved the story mode with special objectives or like you said with completing one board each, it sounds nice.

How did that even happen? Some of my data for other games got corrupted but i'm 99% certain that was because I used a homebrew for wii to back up the saves on an SD card.

Anyway, I got all of Luigi's presents and Mario's(This was to unlock Expert difficulty). I have 1 of Yoshi's presents but I just cannot find the motivation to get the other five.

I'm not exactly sure, I've had a lot of bad luck with Gamecube memory cards in the past. One day it just claims it needs to be formatted and there's no way to get around it, I'm not if I did anything wrong with them. Of course I don't turn the power off while saving and other stuff like that. I've heard they break after awhile. This was years ago and I didn't backup save data. It was only Gamecube cards I've ever had issues with.

I think they should have changed the story mode up for each character to make it more motivating. I would rather play Party mode honestly.

I did Party Mode with every character  :P I agree it would have been better if the Party Mode was different with each character but it wasn't THAT boring since i haven't done it in one try!
The best thing in Mario Party 4 i think is the "Custom Set" for me!
I like how it is really inspired by the first Mario Parties but...
I really don't like the board.. Not because of the design but how the board are luck-based!
You can't really pick where you go most of the times,it can be random or decided by the order.. It's kinda weird and makes it hard to be able to go to the star unless you are lucky enough to have a magic lamp!
I also don't like much the minigames it has the worst GCN minigames for me! Most of them are slow and boring. There is some great ones (Dugeons Duos rocks!) But i don't like half of them.. And thanks the custom set is there :D

Story Mode was AWFUL.

Boards are terrible too.
