WARNING: There is a game-breaking bug related to using the Wacky Watch on the Last Turn. Please see the Known Bugs/Glitches section below for more information.
Welcome to Seized Sea Sides! Bowser has found an unexplored underwater ruins during a submarine treasure hunt near Dire Dire Docks. In the ruins, he found an artefact that upon touch, powered up some platforms that resemble portals. After sending his minions through the portals, he received a report back that the portals lead to a beach that resembles the ruins in the depths. There also appears to be high amounts of Star Power on these locations, so Bowser has deployed his Magikoopas to disrupt any unsuspecting travelers, and Baby Bowser's going as far as charging an entry fee to the beach.

This board takes some inspiration from Banjo-Kazooie's Treasure Trove Cove. It is a much more simple experience than some of my other boards, while still keeping a lot of neat tricks the players can take advantage of in their quest to become the Superstar!

The effects of Happening Spaces, Board Events, and other mechanics will be explained below, if you'd like to go into the board blind, please ignore the spoiler tagged area below:
Core Mechanics:
  • Players will be able to travel between two sides (the beach, and the depths) using Portals. Portals going to the ocean floor will decrease your remaining roll by 2, whereas portals going to the beach will have Baby Bowser take 5 coins from you, or (rarely) give you 5 coins. If you have a Bowser Suit going to the beach, you'll receive 20 coins.
  • There is a Portal Bonus Star awarded to the player who went through the most portals.
The 2 sides will share a layout, but include small differences in some events based on the turn player's location.

Shared Events:
  • Happening (Magikoopa Item Shuffler): Exchanges your items for others of similar theme/use. If you have no items, Magikoopa will forcibly sell you a shop item at x2 price. If you cannot afford it, you'll receive 5 coins and be warped behind a random Item Shop. If your only item is Skeleton Keys, you'll be warped behind a Skeleton Gate. (For a full list of the Item Swaps, please see the Stats for Nerds section)
  • Happening (Cataquack/Torpedo Bill) : Warps the player to a random space.
Beach:
  • 1A) MP3 Toad Item Shop
  • 2A) MP3 Koopa Bank
  • 3A) Coin Steal Only Boo (Slightly more fair)
  • 4A) Quicksand: Lose all coins and be warped back to START in the depths.
  • 5A) Marathon Training Area: Earn 5 Coins for every lap around the flag. You will be escorted out to the highlighted space above on your next turn.
  • 6A) Happening (Digging On The Beach): Dig with the shiny shovel and see what you dig up. (See stats for Nerds section)
Depths:
  • 1B) MP3 Baby Bowser Item Shop
  • 2B) MP2 Bowser Bank
  • 3B) Star Steal Only Boo
  • 4B) Whirlpool: Lose 1 Star and be warped back to START in the beach.
  • 5B) Marathon Training Area: Earn 1 Star if you can complete 5 laps before your turn ends. You will be escorted out to the highlighted space above next turn.
  • 6B) Happening (Treasure In The Deep): Pick a treasure chest to open, and if you open the correct one, you'll earn 5 coins and be able to open another. If you can open them all without failing, you'll get a Star. If you pick the wrong one, you will lose 10 coins. The treasure chest order will be the same until someone claims the Star.

Known Bugs/Glitches:
  • When entering The Pit, the player character's model doesn't shrink sometimes. It doesn't have any effects on gameplay, it just looks odd. This is due to a check the game has to restore the character's model size back to normal every frame. The event is supposed to delete this instruction momentarily while the model shrinks, but it appears to only work sometimes. There is no ETA on the fix.
  • When using a Wacky Watch on the Last Turns, it appears the game plays out the Portal Bonus Star Ceremony and then enters a state of repeating the player's turns without actually ending the turn, resulting in a softlock. Research on this will be conducted soon (as of 7/16) to come up with a fix.
