What's New?

The forum has a shine it hasn't seen in over decade. The switch from SMF to Xenforo as our forum software brought the Mario Party Legacy Forum into the modern era. There's a lot to discuss, and this topic aims to break down the features you should know about. Our upgraded downloads section is our biggest highlight, so we'll save it for the end.

New Forum Structure

We're keeping it small! Current structure:
  • Mario Party
  • General
  • Forum and Announcements
  • Guides and Articles
  • Support
  • Mario Party Modding
In addition to the standard board type where topics can be posted and anyone can reply, there are also Article, Suggestions, and Q&A board types.
  • Article - Provides a template better suited for longer posts with less focus on conversation.
  • Suggestions - Individual posts can be upvoted and downvoted, then sorted by vote criteria.
  • Q&A - Replies to a topic can be voted on and the post with the highest vote count is chosen as the solution.
We're only using the Article type in our current setup, but we hope to make use of the others in the future!

Other cool thing to note: the forum is now mobile friendly! Check topics and even downloads on your phone.

Post and Reply Additions

Noteworthy new things you can do with posts:
  • Reactions! Leave a like or different reaction on a post when a quick acknowledgement is all that's needed. Works for downloads too.
  • After submitting a reply, there is a short window of a few minutes where you can edit your post without having it marked as edited.
  • Attachments! Uploading an image will let you properly paste it into your post. Plus, viewing said image is a much smoother experience.
  • The WYSISWG editor is also more intuitive and allows for easier ways to enable quotes, spoilers, and other important tags.
  • Videos are much easier to embed with an option in the editor.
  • Directly tag another user by using the mention feature. Type their username like @SuperZambezi to alert them!

Alerts and Notifications

Stay on top of your topics, your downloads, and the other cool things you want to follow on the forum. The neat bell icon in the top navigation will display a neat red icon whenever it's has something to share with you. Alerts can come from the following:
  • A topic you set to "watch" gets a new reply or update. This can be your own topic or somebody else's topic.
  • Someone tags and mentions you in their reply.
  • A post you created was deleted, changed, or moved.
  • A download you set to "watch" gets an update or a change.
  • Whenever you receive a new badge.
  • When someone you follow does... something. Yes, you can select to follow other users! No, I have not tested it out!
Truthfully, I haven't tested out all the functionality of the new private messaging system, but I believe alerts are involved there too. Private messages are now conversations, and you can add more than one person to form a group convo. You can also leave conversations you no longer want to be a part of.

Profile Updates

Have you taken a peek at your profile? Looks a bit different!

First thing you'll notice is the profile banner, a new option that allows you to customize your space with an image that suits you. Please keep in mind the rules when picking an image. Images should be under 1MB in size, so please compress images if needed and use the JPEG file format.

Profiles now allow you to post updates for all to see. Additionally, there is a section to see all the latest activity by the user, including uploading attachments and downloads.

Speaking of downloads, each user will have a section in their profile dedicated to all the downloads they've contributed to the Mario Party modding scene. Another great way to celebrate our creators! There's also a section for badges associated with the user, and we'll in that...

Badges and Membergroups

...right now! Do something cool or achieve a certain rank on the forum? Get a badge! These badges will appear near your username on all your posts, and they'll also be displayed on your profile. Badges are spread across three main categories:

Post Count

  • New Star - 1+ posts
  • Yellow Star - 5+ posts
  • Orange Star - 100+ posts
  • Red Star - 500+ posts
  • Purple Star - 1,000+ posts
  • Blue Star - 2,000+ posts
  • Cyan Star - 5,000+ posts
  • Green Star - 10,000+ posts

PartyPlanner64 Creators

  • PP64 Content Creators - Anyone who has had a download approved.

Legacy Badges

  • Gold - Recognizes users who joined the forum prior to January 1, 2012.
  • Silver - Recognizes users who joined the forum after December 31, 2011 and prior to January 1, 2017.
  • Bronze - Recognizes users who joined the forum after December 31, 2016 and prior to August 31, 2023.
mario-party-legacy-forum-new-avatar.jpgWhy make a distinction between users from the old forum and users from the new forum? For one, it's nice to be recognized as an older member of the community. But! Users in these membergroups also have access to specific boards in the Archives. For Bronze and up, you'll see the original Mario Party modding board. For Silver and up, you'll have access to our Forum Games board, the Blogs, Activity Central, and all our past forum events. For Gold, you'll have access to some of our original party and club boards.

It took a very, very long time to do, but all our previous boards have had their entire permissions reset, and all 30+ membergroups we created over the years have been removed. We've started fresh, and that means a functioning system in the backend.

The New Downloads Database

THRILLED! So happy with the new space for our custom downloads for Mario Party modding. I put a lot of time into the visual presentation and navigation of the pages, and I made sure to prop up important stats and other useful bits of info. Let's go over some of the biggest changes and additions:

Download versions! When you update a download, you'll be able to officially update the version number. This allows you to create a separate update comment where you can mention all the changes. Users that have your download marked to watch will get alerted! The version number will also be displayed on the main downloads page.

Reviews! Give a download a rating and review. This time ratings actually mean something and they can help when sorting through all the different downloads. When posting a review, you'll be asked to answer a few questions that will help solidify testing environments that can be compared across all reviews.

New submission requirements! Uploading a board? Now you'll be asked about board difficulty, recommended number of turns, use of custom events, and more. This will help users see important notes about your board, and these stats will always appear in the same area for each download. Events and music get their own requirements too. The more info, the better!

Discussion topics! When your board is approved, a discussion topic will automatically be created in our Mario Party Modding board. These topics will serve as hubs to discuss ideas, bugs, future updates, and more.

Category revamp! All downloads are now sorted by their type: board, event, or music. Each board is tagged with which Mario Party it's for. Click that tag to see all downloads for that specific Mario Party.

Are there other cool things we forgot to mention? I'm sure of it! If you spot something we haven't mentioned here, feel free to let us know below!
