There's a huge hole in Dragon Ball Z *spoilers*

I've been re watching kai recently and something struck me as odd. In the episode where Vegeta ask krillin to blast him so he can heal and get a boost to his power level, he says it wouldn't work if he self inflicts the injury. Despite this, we see goku hurting himself training on the way to namek and obviously getting stronger every time he eats a senzu bean as opposed to the actual training.

I'm told there's lots in the show though i've yet to really see them unlike this one.

Well, it's Kai :p

But isn't there a gravity room he's training in on the way there? Then he takes the senzu after tiring himself to the point that he can't move anymore?

The anime itself was bad enough because it even added fillers that made you sit even longer, but Kai removes everything so it's "just the action" that you wouldn't get the full details. Not that I've watched Kai fully to see just what exactly they leave out, but I wouldn't recommend anime for anything if you want to know the story. Manga be the only way to go for as far as "true to the story" goes. Even Death Note completely changed the ending (which I will admit I liked a lot more than the planned ending) but point being is nothing is followed through perfectly from the original print.

The problem comes in when he's deliberately (and inadvertently) firing ki at himself.

Actually, DBZ in my honest opinion had decent/amusing filler and even its worse wasn't TOO annoying to sit through. It's weird, i'm an avid reader but i much prefer anime to manga but i do get annoyed when it doesn't follow the source material faithfully enough. For instance, i think i like the original ending to death note better.
