New Gimmick in Mario Kart 9 / Roster?

:star: I know it hasn't come out yet, but what new gimmick do you think will be in Mario Kart 9? Almost each Mario Kart on a home  console got a change, heck even Mario Kart 7 got a big change and it was handheld. (I know it's kind of early to talk about this but whatever, and I looked to make sure their was't already a topic on this. Their wasn't.)

Mario Kart: Double Dash - Double Kart
Mario Kart: Wii - Tricks
Mario Kart: 7 - Underwater, Hang gliders
Mario Kart: 8 - Anti-gravity

So, what do you all suppose will be in Mario Kart 9. I'm guessing maybe back to Double Dash and add all this stuff in or something. :p I don't know, maybe all you guys have a better idea. Shoot them in the comments, but not literally. XD

:star: Also, how big do you suppose the roster will be? I'll guess 35 or so.
Maybe new character such as Metallic Rosalina and Silver Emerald Luigi right?
Probably Nabbit and cool characters like him. Heck,, I'll even take Luma or a Sprixie instead of clone characters. Your thoughts?

Mario Kart 9 would probably be another handheld title. Wonder if they'll be able to port anti-gravity and 12 player races? The handheld ones really paled in comparison to 8.

Well, first off, I'm sure the next Mario Kart will be on the Nintendo NX. But for what kind of console it is, that is unknown, as we don't have complete details until 2016.

Planes and hovercrafts.

Oh wait, that's Diddy Kong Racing.
It would be cool if Mario Kart did that, too, but it wouldn't be original. It might be Diddy Kong Racing 2 if it was...then again there's rumors on that.

Mario Kart X Diddy Kong Racing, anyone?

Playable Diddy, Dixie and Krunch?
Some returning tracks, and planes and hovercrafts...

The NX is a few years off, though, isn't it? And the current pattern is handheld game -> console game -> handheld game. Though I'm not sure if there's much point making a new MK for the N3DS since it's just a more powerful 3DS.

No one truly knows if the NX is next year, 2017, 2018, or after 2018. Some might say Summer 2016 at the earliest (as rumors say) or holiday of that year or 2017 or after that.

There definitely won't be a Mario Kart game for the New Nintendo 3DS. Like you said, it's just a more powerful 3DS. Nintendo DS had Mario Kart DS, but the Nintendo DSi did not. So no.

That sounds like an interesting idea. That could mix pretty well, having the Mario characters and DK crew in the mix. I'd like to see Lanky Kong in it as he was in a racing game before. The planes and hovercraft along with an adventure mode possibly. Bring the best from both games.

I think it's possible for them to go from 200cc and go for higher speeds but then it would be more like F-Zero although they don't seem to be interested in bringing that back unfortunately. Maybe they could have some time changing gimmick where certain parts of the track change from a slower speed to a faster speed and vice versa? I think they could do something with that.

For roster additions they could add the Sprixie Princesses and handle the colors like how the Yoshi and Shy Guy colors are handled. I honestly like them and they wouldn't really be a bad addition. However, there's the hate for one of them being playable in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash.

Maybe make the driving underground thing via drill into a reality, like how they nixed the feature in Mario Kart 8. I don't know how they can pull that off with high speeds, though, since you're basically hitting up a wall most of the time.

I'd like the ability to fly since day one in Mario Kart, though, clearly inspired by my time playing Diddy Kong Racing. Hang gliding is a nice step towards that, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed had a neat plane concept. I'd like full-blown flying, though it would be hard to balance that and being on the ground, because flying adds an extra dimension.

For the roster, I'd be content with the roster if Baby Mario and Baby Luigi returned as playable characters. I don't really use much outside of them and a handful of my favorites, so if there was an installment that didn't introduce new characters, but returned them then I wouldn't mind.

Hmmmm. Maybe driving on water? That would be cool!
Well, I would like to see wheelies from MKWii return as well.

@LP: Planes and hovercrafts are too similar to gliders XD
Bowser we're talking Diddy Kong Racing.
That's not similar to gliders at all.
Yeah, gliders force you along a path to reach the next part of the course, while the hovercraft can be used to traverse on water faster than cars but has slippery movement and can hop.

Planes also can fly in any direction you want, and you can barrel roll, which can be used to break courses and the game into a variety of OOB and glitch situations. :p

Who knows when this'll be but in Mario Kart 9 I'd prefer them just expanding on the gimicks they've already created.
AND THEM PUTTING THEM ALL INTO THIS ONE GAME!
Double Dash, Anti-Grav, ~everything~.

Of course they won't do that but a guy can still hope. :p
That would be amazing.

Yeah as someone who never played Double Dash (besides like ten minutes in a hotel) I'd really like to see Double Drivers in a new game.

I feel like after how much I personally enjoyed(and still enjoy) my time with Mario Kart 8 that they should NOT go with some kind of major gameplay changing gimmick.

I think they have solidly established what makes the series so well regarded gameplay wise with that game and instead they should focus on beefing up the game's additional features.(Battle mode, more substantial singleplayer modes, etc.)

The roster is probably going to disappoint me in some way but eh, it can't be as bad as the 3DS game's roster... right?(fingers crossed anyway)
