This was hard to avoid, as both of these characters are motivated to help their friends in times of need. But I'm giving this to Fate, because she is more concerned about others than Nanoha.

Fate wins this point by a landslide. She first started as a cold individual with little concern other than for her tasks, but she then learns to become her own self and value the lives of others. Nanoha hasn't had a significant change like this throughout the series.

The conclusion: Nanoha is a great main protagonist, but Fate leaves me more drawn to her with her backstories and her numerous traits.
