Katie_Venomoth.png

GEN 1: VENOMOTH
Venomoth's ability to poison its enemies and its type combination suggests that it may have been based on a moth in the Arctiidae family. Its Japanese name may mean it may also have been influenced by the Morphinae subfamily of butterflies; its wings' design seems to be heavily influenced by Morphinads.

Venomoth is likely a combination of venom and moth.
Venomoth has attracted my attention recently. It doesn't really have any bulk, but it still is a good Bug-type nonetheless. A BST of 450 may not seem like much, but look at its ability Wonder Skin and you will question calling it useless. Wonder Skin decreases the accuracy of status moves to 50%, makig it an excellent anti-stall Pokemon. Teach it Quiver Dance, Baton Pass, Sleep Powder, and Bug Buzz, and you've got a potent assistant on your side. Plus I have a fondness for deadly moths.

McCann_Scizor.png

GEN 2: SCIZOR
Scizor shares characteristics with flying red ants and mantises. It may also share characteristics with lobsters.

Scizor is a corruption of scissor or a combination of scissors and razor.
No Bug-type has been more attractive to me than this metal mantis. There are very few words that can sum up how much I love Scizor. I mean just look at it! Scizor is one of the coolest-looking bugs I've ever seen. That head, those eyes, those wings, not to mention those pincers just scream awesome. As far as statistics, Scizor has the exact same BST of 500 as its pre-evolution Scyther. However, it has a better stat distribution as it trades Speed for more Attack and Defense, and it also has a better typing of Bug/Steel, which reduces its weaknesses to only Fire. Not to mention that it has an Attack stat that makes Genesect jealous. In fact, its Attack stat reaches a maximum of 394! Add up to Technician, which boosts moves with 60 BP or less, and a movepool with U-Turn, Bullet Punch, Superpower, Pursuit, Quick Attack, Swords Dance, Acrobatics, Roost, Bug Bite, and Iron Head, and you've got one mantis that will rip your team to shreds. Plus in XY, it gets an equally awesome Mega Evolution. Also it has some flashy anime moments.

Brandon_Ninjask.png

GEN 3: NINJASK
It may have been based on a fully adult cicada, with the colors resembling a magicicada. It also slightly resembles a bee and has traits in common with ninjas.

Ninjask may be a combination of ninja and mask.
Ninjas, ninjas... you've just gotta appreciate them. Its BST of 456 mainly has appeal in its Speed of 160, the highest of all nonlegendaries. Its movepool with Baton Pass, Substitute, Protect, Swords Dance, and Toxic combined with Speed Boost, which increases Speed at the end of each turn, makes it perfectly suited to the role of assistant.

Jessie_Yanmega.png

GEN 4: YANMEGA
It is, as its name suggests, based on the Meganeura monyi, a particularly large, prehistoric species of dragonflies. Its species name suggests it's based on a Green Darner.

Yanmega and Megayanma are a combination of 蜻蜓 yanma (large dragonfly) and Meganeura (a genus of gigantic prehistoric dragonflies). It may also be a play at "mega yanma".
Another Bug/Flying that doesn't suck? You've got it. Yanmega has the highest HP of all Bug-types at 86 out of its BST of 515. Its wings are so powerful, they can dislodge full-grown trees at takeoff. Surprisingly enough, its greatest stat is not Speed, but Special Attack, which can reach a maximum of 364. Combined with Tinted Lens or Speed Boost, and a movepool with Bug Buzz, Air Slash, Psychic, U-turn, Sleep Talk, Protect, Hidden Power, and Giga Drain, you'll think twice before calling Bug/Flying weak. Also its concept is a nice prehistoric throwback.

Volcarona_anime.png

GEN 5: VOLCARONA
Volcarona is based on a moth, particularly the Atlas moth or Cecropia Moth. Conceptually, it seems to be derived from the phrase "like a moth to a flame," which refers to the observed positive phototaxis demonstrated by moths. It may be based on a solar deity, a type of god said to be able to control various aspects of the sun such as sunrise, sunset, eclipses, position, etc, the black spots on its wings representing dark spots on the sun. Its wings may be based on the petals of a tiger lily, having the same number of extensions, black spots, and red-orange coloring. The head and antennae of Volcarona bear a resemblance to the headpiece of Hathor, which depicts the horns of the goddess cradling a disk representing the sun in between. Volcarona's appearance may also be loosely based on that of a seraph, a type of angel that is often associated with fire, as its name literally translates to "burning one". Like Volcarona, seraphim are often depicted with six red wings and no legs.

Volcarona is a combination of volcano and corona, referring to its Fire type and status as the Sun Pokémon. It may also refer to Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.
Now this is a great moth Pokemon. The past moths haven't been to impressive, but thankfully, the five-foot tall Sun Pokemon showed up and did it right. Its unique typing of Bug/Fire was unexpected, but was executed superbly. Its design choice was awesome, being a solar moth of all things. Its flames are so special, that it is said that they can replace the sun when it becomes dark with ash. Volcarona has the highest Special Attack out of any Bug-type, reaching a maximum of 405! Its Special Defense and Speed rival that of Mew. Its BST is 550, and combined with Flame Body and a ridiculously superb movepool with Quiver Dance, Bug Buzz, Fire Blast, Giga Drain Hidden Power, Hurricane, Roost, Rest, and its signature move Fiery Dance, which has a 50% chance of raising Volcarona's gargantuan Special Attack, it can really roast foes. Simply put, you just can't go wrong with Volcarona, with its awesome appearance, ingenious concept, and amazing stats, Volcarona is hands-down my favorite Gen V Bug-type.

Viola_Vivillon.png

GEN 6: VIVILLON
Vivillon is based on a butterfly. Considering the many different varieties of Vivillon that differ depending on the player's geographic location, Vivillon may have been based on divergent evolution or possibly species mimicry.

Vivillon may be a combination of vivid and papillon (French for butterfly). It may also derive from viví en (Spanish for "I lived in"), referring to its geographic variation.
Well, it's the only fully-evolved Bug-type this generation. Still, despite being rather underwhelming in both design and stats, Vivillon is still decent. Having a BST of 411 along with Shield Dust, Compound Eyes, or Friend Guard, and a movepool with Bug Buzz, Hurricane, Quiver Dance, Roost, Sleep Powder, and a signature move, Powder, it's not entirely useless. Plus it has some collective value with its 18 wing patterns, so it at least it has a purpose.

Mother_Tyranitar.png

GEN 2: TYRANITAR
Tyranitar seems to be based on Godzilla, a kaiju known for its strength, tough skin and ability to shoot beams from its mouth. Godzilla itself was designed by combining three dinosaurs: Tyrannosaurus, Iguanodon and Stegosaurus, along with a crocodile and an alligator.

Tyranitar is derived from tyrant or Tyrannosaurus (derived from the same root).
Where do I even begin about how awesome this thing is? Tyranitar's origin of Godzilla just screams "When I hit the battlefield, I will leave you stunned with anticipation." Its design is already so great, and now it gets a Mega Evolution to be even more awesome. Not to mention, it is a shining stone on the battlefield, with its BST of 600, a unique typing in Rock/Dark, Sand Stream, and like other psuedo-legendaries, its movepool is gargantuan, with options like Pursuit, Crunch, Stone Edge, Superpower, Fire Blast, Ice Beam, Low Kick, and Stealth Rock. Gen 2 was the first gen to bring in Dark-types, and it was an excellent generation with introducing new ones too.

Cassidy_Sableye.png

GEN 3: SABLEYE
Sableye is a stylization of the Hopkinsville Goblin, a creature from an alleged Kentucky "alien encounter" described as having shining eyes, small legs, clawed arms and swaying hips (a movement that Sableye does indeed imitate in the 3-D Pokémon games). The Hopkinsville aliens are most famous in Japan, where they have appeared in other anime and video games.

Sableye is a combination of sable and eye. It may also be a play on able-eyed.
Gen 3 brought us this creepy, mischievous, jewel-eating munchkin that is just so creative. It reminds me of three other wackos: Stitch, Invader Sim, and Fawful. That grin of Sableye's just tells you that it's up to no good, which is backed up by one of its abilities, Prankster. Speaking of which, that is what makes something with a low BST of 380 usable, and its movepool really helps as well, which includes Will-O-Wisp, Recover, Taunt, Foul Play, Snarl, and Night Shade. Also, you've just got to hear this: Sableye has sapphires for eyes, a ruby on its abdomen, and its shiny form has an emerald on its abdomen instead. Do you get the reference?

Darkrai_M10.png

GEN 4: DARKRAI
Resembling a shadow, Darkrai's appearance suggests it is based on the concept of nightmares. It may have been inspired by the old Arabic myths about genies (or jinn) or the Bogeyman. Darkrai could also be based on the concept of Morpheus, the Greek god responsible for shaping dreams.

Darkrai is a combination of dark, and 暗い kurai (dark) or "rai" (Hindi for king).
Darkrai is just so extraordinary, being my second-favorite Pokemon of all time. Until Gen 5 came along, Darkrai was my all-time favorite Pokemon. Its concept of being a shadow-like being that can give nightmares to anything is just so spectacular in its execution. Let's not forget to mention that it is a force of nature on the battlefield, with a BST of 600, Bad Dreams, and an amazing movepool with Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, Nasty Plot, Substitute, Trick, Thunder Wave, and its signature move, Dark Void. Its Special Attack rivals that of Porygon-Z, and its Speed rivals that of Weavile! Not to mention that it is the only Pokemon with the ability Bad Dreams, which drains the health of any sleeping Pokemon. If a Darkrai manages to put you to sleep, you are absolutely screwed. Finally, it had a remarkable role in The Rise of Darkrai, where it bravely protected Alamos Town from the destruction caused by Dialga and Palkia's fighting, risking its life to do so. Now that's what you call a true work of art.

Shannon_Hydreigon.png

GEN 5: HYDREIGON
Hydreigon is based on Yamata no Orochi. It may also incorporate elements of hydras and Slavic dragons.
Originally, according to interviews with Ken Sugimori in Nintendo Dream, Hydreigon and its pre-evolutions were intended to be cybernetic dragons incorporating aspects of tanks within their bodies before being redesigned around the theme of Yamata no Orochi. The tank track-like markings on Hydreigon's body are a remnant of this design. Furthermore, although Yamata no Orochi typically has eight heads in mythology, Hydreigon was drawn with a fewer number of heads in order to appear less confusing.

Hydreigon may be a combination of hydra, drei (German for three), and dragon.
Oh Arceus, it's Hydreigon! Now we're all doomed. Being a brutally violent dragon with three heads, this is another awesome Dark-type out of so many other great ones in its same generation. Hydreigon can and will consume and destroy everything in its path. This psuedo-legendary, with a BST of 600, a unique typing in Dark/Dragon, Levitate, and a vast movepool with Draco Meteor, Fire Blast, Superpower, Roost, Earthquake, Dark Pulse, Substitute, Dragon Pulse, Focus Blast, Flamethrower, and U-turn, is very strong in battle. Its strongest stat, Special Attack, can reach a maximum of 383. Don't let your Pikachu fight this thing, unless you want it to be overwhelmed and pummeled to defeat!

tumblr_mvm83g41YO1qlpahho1_500.jpg

GEN 6: GRENINJA
Greninja is based upon a frog, and, due to its spiked protrusions above its eyes, may have been inspired by horned frogs such Megophrys and Ceratophrys. The bubble-like protrusions on its body may be based on toad parotoid glands, possibly referencing the traditional myth of toads causing warts, though they may also be remnants of Froakie and Frogadier's frog foam. Greninja is also inspired by ninjas.

Greninja is a combination of grenouille (French for frog) and ninja.
These Dark-types continue to get awesome, to the point where even a starter is a Dark-type! This thing is so cooly designed that even Shadow Man will shake his head in envy. Not to mention it's a sneaky being in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 530, with 122 of that being Speed, the highest of all starters and the highest of all Water-types, Torrent, Protean, and a good movepool with Dark Pulse, Hydro Pump, Spikes, Surf, Taunt, U-turn, and two signature moves in Water Shuriken and Mat Block. And let me remind you that it's a freaking Greninja! And ninjas are awesome.

Palmer_Dragonite.png

GEN 1: DRAGONITE
Dragonite resembles Japanese sea dragons, or European dragons, or fairy dragons; its description as the "guardian of the sea" may also suggest it has elements similar to the Chinese dragon. Similar-looking Japanese dragons exists in art done by Utagawa Kuniyoshi.

Dragonite may be a combination of dragon and knight, ignite (since it learns several Fire-type moves), or night. It could also refer to draconite, a mythical stone said to be found in the heads of dragons and are pyramidal in shape (similar to Dragonite's horn).
I just happen to have a soft spot for the original psuedo-legendary. Dragonite is very strong, with a BST of 600 and Multiscale, not to mention its Attack stat can reach a maximum of 403! Also, you just gotta admire the mystery that revolved around Dragonite when it was first fabled in the anime. Bottom line: I am not ashamed to say that I am a Dragonite fan. It's not my all-time favorite, but it's still great to me. I just hate how its fans often treat it like a Spiritomb with Wonder Guard.

Clair_Kingdra.png

GEN 2: KINGDRA
Kingdra is based on a weedy sea dragon, but still shares many characteristics with regular seahorses. The fact that it dwells on the sea floor while creating whirlpools may be based on the mythical monster Charybdis. Its secondary Dragon-type may be a reference to a Japanese name for seahorses, 竜の落し子 tatsu-no-otoshigo, which means "dragon's child", and to the legends of Ryūjin and East Asian dragons, where they are said to bear power over the seas of the world, live on the floors of deep bodies of water, and are also known for their weather like ascensions into the heavens.

Kingdra may be a combination of king and dragon or hydra (a mythological sea creature).
Kingdra has been one of Gen 2's fan favorites ever since its debut. It is just absolutely gorgeous to look at. I always liked the way how sea creatures look. It's outstanding in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 540, Swift Swim, and a great movepool with Rain Dance, Hydro Pump, Surf, Draco Meteor, Ice Beam, Dragon Pulse, Dragon Dance, Substitute, Waterfall, Outrage, Rest, and Hidden Power. There's not much else that could be said about Kingdra. It is one unique, reliable, and beautiful Dragon-type.

Rayquaza_M07.png

GEN 3: RAYQUAZA
Rayquaza is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of Ziz, the unconquerable primal master of the sky. Its counterparts were Behemoth and Leviathan. Rayquaza's appearance also draws inspiration from other creatures of myth such as the Asian dragon and lindworm. Alternatively, Rayquaza matches the description of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, who was depicted as a flying serpent, and created the boundary between the earth (including the oceans) and the sky. Its trait of being capable of inhabiting the skies, and living there while subsisting on nothing but dew and particles for centuries, also bears aspects of the legendary Chinese xian hermit sages and East Asian dragons.

Rayquaza most likely refers to Raqiya, the Hebrew word for "firmament". It also may be a combination of ray and quasar. Alternatively, it may be a combination of 烈 retsu (violent or furious), 空 kū (sky), and 座 za (seat or location), which can be taken to mean "one that sits in the ferocious heavens".
At long last, we come across probably the most anticipated contender for the glorious type that is Dragon. It's the extremely powerful, sky-high master of the famous weather trio. It's Rayquaza! Being the legendary mascot of Emerald, Rayquaza is a Pokemon that gets even more awesome as the series continues onward. Now matter what game it appears in, I am always happy to see it. I feel that Rayquaza deserves every microgram of the attention it gets. Its battling capabilities are just so beastly, with a BST of 680, with most of that being distributed into ridiculously high offensive stats. Both of Rayquaza's attack stats are base 150! That really is insane. Not only that, but it has a very diverse movepool, with Dragon Dance, Outrage, Earthquake, Overheat, Draco Meteor, Fire Blast, V-create, ExtremeSpeed, Dragon Tail, Swords Dance, and Dragon Claw. Unlike most dragons, Rayquaza doesn't live in a cave or even at the bottom of a lake (except in SSBB). Rayquaza lives in the freaking ozone layer of all places! It is said to have lived hundreds of millions of years in the ozone layer of Hoenn, where it mercilessly defends its territory from all intruders. Being a huge ring dragon capable of negating weather effects, it's quite apparant that Rayquaza has a signature ability, Air Lock, which is very helpful against opposing weather teams. I should also mention that Rayquaza has one of the coolest names I've ever heard. Rayquaza. Just saying it makes you feel awesome. With every new appearance Rayquaza gets, the more its popularity rises, which I find to be a very good thing, because I feel that everyone should at least like or respect Rayquaza. It is by far the definitive dragon in the series, at least from my perspective, that is.

Cynthia_Garchomp.png

GEN 4: GARCHOMP
Appearance-wise, Garchomp seems like a cross between a European dragon, various species of sharks (including the hammerhead), and possibly a dromaeosaurid or other therapod dinosaur. It may have the genuine appearance of a land shark. Its design also strongly resembles a jet aircraft.

Garchomp may be a combination of a corruption of gore (a type of road formation) or gore (a projecting point) and chomp. Gar may also derive from garpike (a species of fish somewhat similar in appearance) or be a corruption of Carcharodon (the scientific name for sharks) or Carcharias (a genus of sand shark). Gar may also be a corruption of guard or derived from gargoyle, as they are often known to resemble European dragons, which relate to Garchomp's Dragon type.
You thought Dragonite wasn't enough? Well, here you go. Sharks have always been so menacing, so what better way to show some more awesomeness and creativity by putting a land shark in the concept and merge it with that of a freaking jet? Not only is the concept very well executed, being a psuedo-legendary, it also excels on the battlefield, with a BST of 600, Sand Veil, Rough Skin, and a huge movepool with Outrage, Earthquake, Fire Fang, Aqua Tail, Dragon Claw, Dual Chop, Stealth Rock, Fire Blast, Swords Dance, Substitute, Stone Edge, Dragon Tail, and Protect. Plus, it gets even more awesome with a new Mega Evolution in XY.

Kyurem_anime.png

GEN 5: KYUREM
Kyurem and its two counterparts Reshiram and Zekrom are based on the concept of yin and yang in Taoism. Kyurem, however, symbolizes wuji, the absence of yin and yang. In regards to overall design, it appears to be based on a theropod and a European dragon, similar to Zekrom. Kyurem's type, Ice, may allude to the absence of energy and the concept of absolute zero. Kyurem's rock-like body and its origin story of arriving on Earth like a meteor are references to comets, which are largely composed of ice crystals.
Given that its Japanese name contains mu, it may be based on the koan mu.

Kyurem may be a combination of 冷 rei (cold), 急冷 kyuurei (rapid cooling), or 雪 yuki (snow) with the kana reversed, and 無 mu (nothing). It may also derive from 零 rei (zero). Rem may also mimic the rom of Zekrom and the ram of Reshiram.
The main reason why I came to like Kyurem so much is because it is just so mysterious. Through in-game text, we discover that Kyurem is an extraterrestrial Pokemon. Supposedly, a meteorite crashed just a few miles north of Lacunosa Town. The impact from the meteorite formed into the Giant Chasm where the player can catch Kyurem. And if the rumors are true, Kyurem is the only Pokemon ever to have actually eaten humans. In Black 2 and White 2, Kyurem gained two new forms: Black Kyurem and White Kyurem, each with their own signature moves. Each form has a unique typing of Dragon/Ice, and have different battle styles, not to mention that each form has a signature move: Kyurem-N has Glaciate, Kyurem-B has Fusion Bolt and Freeze Shock, and Kyurem-W has Fusion Flare and Ice Burn. Overall, Kyurem is a mystery that is just so creative with its multiple forms and battling capabilities.

goodra_by_kawiku-d6qy3ls.png

GEN 6: GOODRA
Goodra, due to its dragon typing, elongated body shape, and retractable tentacles used for battling is probably based on the Lou Carcolh, a mythical serpent/mollusk creature from French folklore. Like its pre-evolutions, it could also be based on soft bodied gastropods, such as slugs and nudibranch; in particular, the "blue dragon" sea slug. Another possible basis is the youkai called Shussebora, or "ascended trumpet shell": a trumpet shell snail that lives 1000 years in the mountains, 1000 on the plains and 1000 at sea will ascend and turn into a dragon.

Goodra is a combination of goo and hydra or dragon.
Another psuedo-legendary? That's right. Surprisingly, Goodra is just ridiculously cute, considering that it's fully evolved, a Dragon-type, and a psuedo-legendary at that. It's great in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 600, Sap Sipper, Hydration, Gooey, and a good movepool with Blizzard, Draco Meteor, Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Focus Blast, Hidden Power, Ice Beam, Infestation, Muddy Water, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Thunder, and Thunderbolt. Now that's what you call a cute brute.

Zapdos_M02.png

GEN 1: ZAPDOS
Zapdos is based on the Native American legend of the thunderbird. The thunderbird was known for being the spirit of thunder, lightning, and rain in the form of a giant bird. The beating of the wings was said to create thunder. It may also have been based on the Lightning Bird, a bird created from wherever lightning hits the earth. It may also have been based on the Impundulu, a bird of witchcraft said to summon thunder and lightning with its wings and talons.

Zapdos is a combination of zap and dos (Spanish for two, indicating that it is the second in the series of Kanto legendary birds).
Zapdos is just awesome. Being designed with the idea of a thunderbird, it's no surprise that I especially like Zapdos of all the original Electric-types. Not only does it look cool, it's great in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 580, Pressure, and wide amounts of coverage with Thunderbolt, Heat Wave, Hidden Power, Roost, Volt Switch, and Toxic. Zapdos is, without a doubt, my favorite legendary bird.

Raikou_LoT.png

GEN 2: RAIKOU
Raikou is particularly based on the Thunder and Lightning gods of most cultures surrounding the world, mostly the 雷獣 raijū, a thunder demon of Japanese lore. It is said to be a creature that could take the form of a tiger, monkey, blue wolf wrapped in lightning, and many other animals. Raikou is specifically based on its tiger form, while the Pokémon Manectric is based on its wolf form. In terms of physical build, Raikou is based on the Smilodon fatalis, a well-known but extinct species of wildcat often referred to as a saber-toothed tiger. Its color and pattern scheme are reminiscent of that of a Bengal tiger. The stripes that decorate Raikou's body also can be compared to zigzagging thunderbolts and perhaps even scars from claws. The white ruff around Raikou's face is akin to the Siberian tiger's thick fur around its neck. In the anime, Raikou is shown to be very agile, swift, stealthy, and a powerful attacker, just like a tiger. The gray "plate" atop its head may be similar to Entei's head ornament, being either a helmet or crown that signifies courage and power. The flowing purple mane on its back is likely meant to invoke the image of a cumulonimbus cloud, the cloud type most often associated with thunderstorms.

Raikou could be taken to mean 雷光 raikou (lightning), which is also the inspiration for the name of raijū, or it may be a combination of 雷 rai (thunder) and 皇 kō (emperor). It may also derive from 雷公 raikō (thunder duke), identical to the name of the Taoist deity Lei Gong.
Not only is Raikou my favorite Gen 2 Electric-type, but it's also my favorite legendary beast. Being a thunder tiger is a cool concept in my book. In addition to its awesome appearance, it has great battling capabilities as well, with a BST of 580, Pressure, and a wide movepool with Calm Mind, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power, Aura Sphere, Substitute, Volt Switch, Signal Beam, Thunder, and Weather Ball. It also had a significant role in The Legend of Thunder. Overall, you can't go wrong with a thunder tiger.

Wattson_Manectric.png

GEN 3: MANECTRIC
It may be based on a maned wolf and a yōkai of Japanese lore, the 雷獣 Raijū, an elemental lightning creature that can take on the shape of various mammals, including a blue wolf wrapped in white and yellow lightning. Manectric's snout also resembles a crocodile clip.

Manectric may be a combination of mane and electric.
Manectric is a Pokemon that I fell in love with the second I saw one. If I decide to replay RSE, I always have a Manectric on my team. Manectric's BST is 475, with its greatest stats being Speed and Special Attack, both which can reach a maximum of 339. Even though it's frail, it's far from useless, as it also has Lightningrod. Manectric's moveset is definitely a positive feature, as despite being mono-Electric type, it can learn moves of a variety of types, with moves like Volt Switch, Overheat, Thunderbolt, Switcheroo, Flamethrower, and Hidden Power. That's what you call versatility. Also, its concept of a lightning wolf is just beastly, and it gets a new Mega Evolution in XY to look more awesome.

Rotom_anime.png

GEN 4: ROTOM
Rotom appears to be based on Pulseman, who was actually designed by Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori, although it may also be inspired by the unexplained phenomenon of ball lightning. Its Pokédex entry brings to mind gremlins. Its possession of other objects may be based on poltergeists or tsukumogami.

Rotom is motor backwards; this may refer to the fact that motors make many appliances function, while Rotom makes them fail.
Anyone who calls Gen 4 Pokemon unoriginal, this is my counterargument. Rotom has 6 forms (each having Levitate): Normal, Fan, Mow, Heat, Wash, and Frost. Also, 4 of the 6 forms have unique typings: Rotom-N is Electric/Ghost, Rotom-M is Electric/Grass, Rotom-H is Electric/Fire, and Rotom-F is Electric/Ice. Each forms have different battling capabilities and are all usable, unlike Unown. Another cool thing about Rotom is its concept. Rotom is a possessed glass ornament engulfed in plasma that can bring any appliance to take control of and go haywire. It may have been underwhelming in early DP, but in Platinum forward, Rotom is something that I would definitely add to my list.

Thundurus_anime.png

GEN 5: THUNDURUS
In Incarnate Forme, Thundurus is based on Raijin, the kami of thunder and lightning. It may also have drawn inspiration from genies.
In Therian Forme, Thundurus seems to be based on a reptile, most likely a snake or dragon. It may also draw inspiration from the Azure Dragon and/or Black Tortoise of the Chinese Four Symbols constellation, or from Quetzalcoatl, a god from the Aztec mythology that resembles a feathered serpent.

Thundurus is from thunderous and possibly Aeolus, ruler of the winds in Greek mythology.
There are so many good Electric-types in Gen 5, but Thundurus appeals to me the most. My main reason for this is my interest in all sorts of mythology; in Thundurus's case, it's Japanese mythology. It also has two forms, which is a plus. Both of them have different battling capabilities, and both are useful at doing their jobs. There's not much else to be said, except that it absolutely dominates in VGC.

heliolisk_by_aishishi-d6r2qik.png

GEN 6: HELIOLISK
Heliolisk is likely based on a frill-necked lizard, because of its notable ability to expand its frill. With its frill fully expanded, Heliolisk also resembles the sun itself when viewed from the front; its black coloration may possibly be a reference to solar eclipses. It may also be based on the spotted salamander, a salamander that has the ability to photosynthesize. Its ability to learn Surf may be a reference to the common basilisk, a reptile capable of running on water for short distances.

Heliolisk is a combination of ἥλιος helios (Ancient Greek for sun), basilisk, and possibly obelisk, an ancient Egyptian monument that represented a ray of sunlight piercing the clouds and hitting the ground at a ninety-degree angle.
There are only three Electric-types introduced in Gen 6, and of all of them, Heliolisk stands out the most for me. Its concept, being based on a lizard that is linked to the sun, is something that I would add to my list. Not only is its appearance flashy, but it can battle as well, having a BST of 481, a unique typing in Electric/Normal, three abilities in Dry Skin, Sand Veil, and Solar Power, and a wide movepool with Charge Beam, Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, Grass Knot, Hidden Power, Parabolic Charge, Surf, Thunder, Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Volt Switch, and a signature move, Electrify. Just as you would not look directly at the sun, you should not underestimate the coolness that is Heliolisk.

Clefable_Metronome.png

GEN 1: CLEFABLE
It seems to be based on fairies and pixies, being a magical, humanoid, playful, winged creature.

Clefable is a combination of clef (musical key) and fable. It may also be derived from able, considering its sharp hearing and ability to lightly skip on water.
Eat your heart out Wigglytuff; Clefable is a lot cuter and a lot more useful in battle. Being changed from a Normal-type to a Fairy-type, Clefable is the better melodious pixie to me. It has a BST of 483, Magic Guard, and an incredible movepool with Wish, Seismic Toss, Knock Off, Protect, Encore, Heal Bell, Double-Edge, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Grass Knot, Ice Beam, and Softboiled. Also, in the anime, Clefable is known to dance around a giant Moon Stone on Mt. Moon during a full moon. Seeing that the Clefairy line is associated with Mt. Moon, this is a neat reference.

Paul_Azumarill.png

GEN 2: AZUMARILL
It may be based on a combination of a rabbit and a beach ball or possibly a personal flotation device or lifebuoy.

Azumarill is a combination of azure (a shade of blue) or azul (Spanish and Portuguese for blue), Marill, and possibly rill (a small river or brook)
Azumarill is very cute, considering that its pre-evolution Marill is sometimes called Pikablu. However, with tons of cuteness come tons of power. Azumarill has a BST of 420, a unique typing in Water/Fairy, Huge Power, and a good movepool with Aqua Jet, Waterfall, Superpower, Ice Punch, and Double-Edge. In the anime, an Azumarill is a friend of the Pichu Bros, and another was used by Paul against Roark in a gym battle, and later given away. Paul is truly an idiot for giving away such a cute and powerful Pokemon.

Melodi_Gardevoir.png

GEN 3: GARDEVOIR
Gardevoir resembles a ballroom dancer. Its exaggerated head with minimal facial expression and an overall frail, featureless physique could also be attributed to anesama ningyou, a style of traditional Japanese paper doll. Its protective nature over its Trainer may suggest that it is based on a guardian angel, though its ghost-like characteristics could also suggest that it is based on ghosts that refuse to leave this world.

Gardevoir may be a combination of garde (French for guard) and devoir (French for duty). It may also be a combination of garder (French verb for to keep) and voir (French verb for to see), reflected in its Pokédex data, which explains how Gardevoir will protect its Trainer even at the cost of its own life and that Gardevoir has the ability to see into the future.
Gardevoir is one of the most popular Pokemon of Gen 3 for many good reasons. First is its usability in battle with its BST of 518, Trace, high Special stats, and a good movepool with Will-O-Wisp, Wish, Pain Split, Protect, Heal Bell, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Focus Blast, Trick, Shadow Ball, Reflect, Light Screen, Memento, Taunt, and Substitute. In XY, it also gains a Fairy-type and a Mega Evolution. Its myth, though, is also very interesting. It apparently can defy gravity and create miniature black holes whenever its Trainer instructs it. Don't mess with this Pokemon. The games really like to hammer in on how Gardevoir will sacrifice itself for its own Trainer and in the first Mystery Dungeon, this is actually one of the major plot points. But my favorite part about Gardevoir is the design. When I first saw it, it reminded me of a ghost maiden walking along a beach. Gardevoir's slender, exquisite, graceful appearance that made many a passionate fan, instantly falling in long-lasting love for this beautiful Pokemon.

Dawn_Togekiss.png

GEN 4: TOGEKISS
Togekiss's design appears to draw inspiration from fairies and birds. Its association with peace and joy, as well as its white coloration, suggests inspiration from doves, but its soaring flight and some physical aspects are similar to those of large birds of prey. Togekiss may have also been designed to resemble a flying wing.

Togekiss is a combination of 刺 toge (spike) and kiss.
Togekiss is an awesome Pokemon for a lengthy list of reasons. It actually changed its typing from the unoriginal Normal/Flying to the more unique Fairy/Flying, and it is still as usable as ever. Togekiss's BST is 545, with its Special Attack reaching a maximum of 372. One technique that makes it deadly is Serene Grace and teaching it Air Slash to flinch your foes to annoyance. In addition, it can also learn Body Slam, Thunder Wave, Flamethrower, Aura Sphere, Nasty Plot, Roost, Heal Bell, and Fire Blast. In addition to its strength, Togekiss is also very cute. Now is it just me, or does Togekiss seem like the perfect Pokemon to give hugs to? I know this sounds pretty strange, from someone like me, but I mean seriously, who wouldn't want to give Togekiss a hug?

Hatterly_Whimsicott_Petilil.png

GEN 5: WHIMSICOTT
Whimsicott appears to be based on a fully bloomed ball of cotton. It also may draw some origin from the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary, which was a type of sheep-growing plant that was used to explain the production of cotton in the middle ages. It may also have been based on the Brazilian folklore creature known as the Saci; both are brown creatures that live in forests, ride on winds, and play pranks. They also appear to be based on a sheep.

Whimsicott may be a combination of whimsical or whimsy and cotton.
Whimsicott is back, and better than ever! Having its type changed from Grass to the unique Grass/Fairy, this cotton ball can show off even more of its cuteness now. It's great in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 480, Prankster, and good movepool with Leech Seed, Substitute, Encore, and Taunt. It is said that Whimsicott rides the whirlwinds and can pull pranks involving cotton or furniture. When it comes down to it, Whimsicott is an adorable Pokemon, unless you get sapped to doom by its dirty tricks.

klefki_by_macuarrorro-d6psith.jpg

GEN 6: KLEFKI
Klefki is based on a keychain and the Pagan tradition of blaming fairies for the loss of small objects, like shoes and keys.
It may also be based on the superstition of carrying an iron charm to ward off fae mischief.

Klefki is a combination of clef (French for key) or a corruption of kleptomaniac (in reference to its habit of collecting keys) and key.
You know Garbodor that everyone (but me) bashes? Well, meet Gen 6's answer to that, Klefki. I really like Klefki's concept, as it is very original for an inanimate object; plus, who wouldn't want a Klefki so that their keys are safe? It's great in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 474, Prankster, Magician, and a good movepool with Dazzling Gleam, Draining Kiss, Facade, Flash Cannon, Foul Play, Frustration, Hidden Power, Psychic, Psyshock, Return, and two signature moves: Fairy Lock and Crafty Shield. Overall, you just can't go wrong with Klefki.

Giovanni_Machamp.png

GEN 1: MACHAMP
Machamp appears to be based on a bodybuilder or wrestler. Seeing as it has more than two arms and blue skin, Machamp might also be based on a Hindu god, perhaps Shiva or Vishnu.

Machamp may be a combination of macho (Spanish for overly masculine or chauvinist) and champion. Macho has come to mean tough or masculine in English. Akin to Mr. Mime, the masculine attribute has no reflection on gender assignment, as both species can be male and female; however, Machop's evolutionary line does have a 3:1 male:female ratio, making the species predominantly—but not entirely—male. The name may also incorporate the term Mach, referring to the high speeds at which Machamp can dole out its powerful punches.
If there's one Pokemon that I think of as "the original definitive Fighting-type," it's Machamp. Its appearance fits its typing perfectly with those huge muscles. In fact, it is so powerful, it can move a mountain with only one hand! It also has very high reflexes, throwing five hundred punches a second, cover pretty much every angle, and can trap a foe by pinning its limbs. That's what you call extraordinary strength, which is also shown by its BST of 505, No Guard, and a good movepool with Substitute, DynamicPunch, Stone Edge, ThunderPunch, Toxic, Bulk Up, and Ice Punch.

Ash_Heracross.png

GEN 2: HERACROSS
Heracross is most likely based on the Japanese rhinoceros beetle. These beetles are known for their incredible strength, and use in insect fighting, which explains its Fighting type.

Heracross and Heracros are a combination of Ἡρακλῆς, Hēraklēs (Heracles, a demigod of Greek mythology, whose Roman mythological analogue has given name to the Hercules beetle) and cross.
Heracross is awesome. Now what could be said about Heracross that hasn't already been said? Well, plenty. First off, it's the only dual Bug/Fighting type. This beetle endows its horns into face combat and can hurl its enemies miles away with one single throw. You might be asking yourself: "How can a bug be that strong?" Well, if you know what it's based on, you had your answer. In addition to its unique typing, Heracross has a BST of 500, Moxie, Guts, and an incredibly high Attack stat, the maximum being 383. Heracross also has one of the most diverse movepools out of any Bug-type. It can learn moves like Close Combat, Megahorn, Stone Edge, Sleep Talk, Night Slash, Facade, Pursuit, and Substitute. In XY, it also gets a Mega Evolution to add more to its toughness. Kinda makes you think differently about Bug-types, doesn't it?

May_and_Blaziken.png

GEN 3: BLAZIKEN
Blaziken is probably based on a cockfighting chicken, specifically the Japanese shamo breed, known for its upright posture and having a mane on the nape of its neck. The feathery legs resemble those of Cochin chickens. It bears resemblance to Horus and Ra, two Ancient Egyptian deities with hawk faces. Blaziken may also be based on the basan, a fire-breathing chicken, or possibly the Karura. It is somewhat based on the phoenix, a mythical bird of fire. This would be in reference to the fact that its feathers burn off every few years. Considering its flame and avian based origin, it may have been based on the taimatsu-maru, which are raptor or tengu-like creatures that trailed flames.

Blaziken is a combination of blaze and chicken.
You bet your Terrakions that I love Blaziken. Being a literal interpretation of fried chicken, Blaziken is a six-foot tall brute of a bird capable of leaping over a skyscraper with a single jump. Being the very first Fire/Fighting starter, Blaziken's typing makes up for one of the widest type arsenals of any starter. Even though its type coverage isn't as wide as Emboar's, Blaziken still manages to learn an awful lot of moves, such as Swords Dance, Hi Jump Kick, Protect, and Flare Blitz, and that's only four of the many moves it has. Blaziken can easily take care of just about any opponent. Blaziken is one of the most offensively based starters to date, with both of its attack stats reaching the high 300's. It is currently the only starter to be classified as Uber. Seriously, I'm not kidding. Blaziken's Hidden Ability is Speed Boost. If you combine that with Blaziken's offensive capabilities and the huge type coverage it has, then you can have one deadly fighting bird. And if that wasn't enough, it also received a Mega Evolution in XY. Also, its cry is intimidatingly awesome. It's a monstrous, creative, and awesome Fighting-type.

Lucario_M08.png

GEN 4: LUCARIO
Lucario appears to be based on the Egyptian god of funerals, Anubis, who has the head of a jackal. Anubis's role in Egyptian mythology was to judge the hearts of deceased souls based on their actions during life. This resembles Lucario's ability to see a life form's aura. It also seems to be based on an Egyptian boxer. Boxing is a sport that is believed to have origins in Egypt. The markings on Lucario's face resemble a mask.

Lucario may be derived from the reverse of orichalcum (a mythical metal) or oracle (referring to its supernatural abilities involving aura). It may also involve lupaster (a subspecies of the Canis aureus), Cairo, pharaoh, or lykos (Greek for wolf).
Lucario is an amazing Pokemon from a multitude of other great Fighting-types in Gen 4. That design is just so sleek and not to mention cool. Being the master of aura, it is able to read minds and understand human language. It can also use the aura in battling as well, and that is another area where it excels, with a BST of 525, Justified, Inner Focus, and a good movepool with Swords Dance, Close Combat, ExtremeSpeed, Ice Punch, Crunch, and Bullet Punch. XY made it even more awesome by giving it a Mega Evolution. It also makes an appearance in SSBB as a playable character, and it is just as good at fighting as in Pokemon battles, with its Final Smash being Aura Storm. But the main reason why I like Lucario is its role in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, where it sacrificed itself to stabilize the Tree of Beginning. That is what you call a sign of heroism.

Keldeo_anime.png

GEN 5 (Excluding Meloetta-Pirouette): KELDEO
Keldeo is most likely based on the legend of the kelpie, a supernatural water horse that sometimes appeared as a lost pony. Keldeo is also likely based on the kirin also referred to as the "Chinese unicorn" which are often depicted with a single backwards curving horn and posses the ability to walk on water. Keldeo also draw inspiration by the character of d'Artagnan from the novel The Three Musketeers. Like d'Artagnan, it is the latest and youngest addition to the group. Keldeo's tail also resembles d'Artagnan's trademark feathered cap.

Keldeo may be derived from kelda (Old Norse for spring/fountain) or may be a combination of kelpie, (a water horse from Celtic folklore) and rodeo (a sport involving skills with horses, cows, and other livestock). Furthermore, "deo" is Latin for "god".
Keldeo is proof that a Pokemon can be cute and cool at the same time. Its design makes even You-Know-Who feel jealous and not to mention that it has two forms: ordinary and Resolute. Its battling capabilities are amazing, having a BST of 580, Justified, and a good movepool with Hydro Pump, Hidden Power, Icy Wind, Surf, Calm Mind, Substitute, and its signature move, Secret Sword. It also played a role in Kyurem VS The Sword of Justice, in which it trained to become an official member of the Swords of Justice.

chesnaught_by_xous54-d6p3eob.png

GEN 6: CHESNAUGHT
Chesnaught seems to be based on a hedgehog combined with a matured chestnut. Its bulky "armor" is possibly a reference to split apart calybium and cupule, which are parts that protect the nuts of chestnut trees which split apart when sufficiently ripened. It is also based on knights and various types of body armor, including brigandines and barbutes.

Chesnaught may be a combination of chestnut and juggernaut, knight, or dreadnaught.
Chesnaught has been a Pokemon that has recently grown on me. Its appearance makes it seem tough, with the spiny armor on its back. Apparently, it can flip a 50-ton tank by slamming into it and not even an explosion can scratch it when it's in defensive mode. It has a BST of 530, Overgrow, Bulletproof, and a good movepool with Earthquake, Hammer Arm, Swords Dance, Taunt, Wood Hammer, and its signature move, Spiky Shield. That's what you call a tough tank of a hedgehog.

Ninetales_BW135.png

GEN 1: NINETALES
Ninetales, like Vulpix, is based on a fox. However, in Japan there are certain legends concerning foxes, or kitsune, as they are known there. One such legend which relates to Ninetales the most is how many-tailed foxes can breathe fire, create illusions, and have extremely long lifespans. After living a long time, these creatures take on spirit forms, which may be the reason why these two related Pokémon can learn Ghost-type moves. In particular, Ninetales is based on the 九尾の狐, the nine-tailed kitsune, which is a kitsune of advanced age whose fur has turned silver-gold, and upon gaining its ninth tail, have gained powers equivalent of a deity, bearing omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience.

Ninetales is a combination of nine and tales, which is either a corruption of tails or refers to Ninetales's origin as a Japanese myth. It also could possibly be a reference to the cat o' nine tails whip, which was historically used in military punishments.
Now, Ninetales has always intrigued me for one reason or another. Of course, it's a fox, so it's good enough for me. But there's just something very ominous about Ninetales. Every time I watch the episode where Ninetales messes with Brock's head, I always found it to be eerie. It's Pokedex entries drive that eeriness even further. Yellow's dex entry says, "According to an enduring legend, 9 noble saints were united and reincarnated as this Pokémon." That enough for you? No? Well, how about one more? Ruby's dex entry says, "Ninetales casts a sinister light from its bright red eyes to gain total control over its foe's mind. This Pokémon is said to live for a thousand years." It has very good battling capabilities as well, having a BST of 505, Drought, and a good movepool with Flamethrower, Will-o-Wisp, Sunny Day, Roar, Hypnosis, Substitute, SolarBeam, Fire Blast, Hidden Power, and Nasty Plot. Ninetales is definitely one glamorous Fire-type.

Ho-Oh_anime.png

GEN 2: HO-OH
Ho-Oh is based on the Huma bird, a legendary bird that is said to never rest, living its entire life flying continuously, and resurrects itself and others in its own ashes and flames. It is a symbol of fortune and friendship and will bestow happiness to anyone who simply glimpses it. Ho-Oh, like Moltres, is also based on the legend of the phoenix; unlike Moltres, it is based more on the Fenghuang, the immortal phoenix of China from which it derives its name. Many cultures view the Phoenix and Huma as symbols of resurrection; this is seen in Ho-Oh, which was reborn rising from its own ashes and had a hand in resurrecting Suicune, Raikou and Entei. It may also be based on many other firebirds; some examples are the three-legged bird, Simurgh, and the Ember Bird. It also is similar to the rainbow-feathered bird god Achiyalabopa.

Ho-Oh and Houou are alternate transcriptions of 鳳凰 Hōō (phoenix), specifically the Chinese phoenix, Fènghuáng. The ou may also refer to 皇 ō (emperor) or 王 ō (king).
Being the guardian of the skies and the mascot of Gold/HeartGold, Ho-Oh stands out among all of the other Gen 2 Fire-types. First off, the design if a phoenix is always a sign of some beautiful flashiness. It can resurrect the deceased, and create rainbows with its wings. It can also grant happiness who bear witness to it. Its battling capabilities are very impressive, with a BST of 680, Regenerator, and a great movepool with Brave Bird, Substitute, Earthquake, Roost, Sleep Talk, Punishment, Flame Charge, Tailwind, Whirlwind, and its signature move, Sacred Fire. In the anime, Ho-Oh is often associated with Ash, and if you have the courage to train this beautiful bird, then it will pay off in the end.

Xatu_Forest_Camerupt.png

GEN 3 (Excluding Blaziken): CAMERUPT
Camerupt is essentially a Bactrian camel with volcanoes on its back instead of humps.

Camerupt is a combination of camel and erupt.
You've just got to admire that tough-looking appearance of Camerupt, as it has volcanoes for humps! Its body contains lava that is up to 18,000°F, which can erupt if you anger it. Its battling skills are solid as well, with a BST of 460, Solid Rock, and a good movepool with Rock Polish, Fire Blast, Earth Power, Stone Edge, and Earthquake. Overall, Camerupt is a creative and powerful Pokemon that is another one of Gen 3's impressive Fire-types.

Marcus_Heatran.png

GEN 4: HEATRAN
Heatran is most likely based on volcanic remains. Its Steel type references how the Earth's inner core is made of solid metal under immense pressure. It may also be based on a turtle, as the Pokémon Platinum Pokédex entry states that it is melted in parts because of its own heat and in the artwork, bits of metal, which may possibly be a melted shell, can be seen on its body.

Heatran may be a combination of heat and transfer. Tran may also derive from transition metal, referring to its Steel-type (note that steel itself is not a transition metal, but an alloy of one).
Heatran is one tough-looking Fire-type. It can dig deep into walls using its claws, and can climb walls and ceilings. It also has great battling capabilities, with a BST of 600, Flash Fire, and an exceptional movepool with Fire Blast, Earth Power, Hidden Power, Stealth Rock, Toxic, Taunt, Lava Plume, Protect, Roar, Will-o-Wisp, Overheat, Dragon Pulse, Flamethrower, Sunny Day, SolarBeam, Substitute, and its signature move, Magma Storm. Heatran is one hot Pokemon that stands out from the other Gen 4 Fire-types.

Victini_M14.png

GEN 5 (Excluding Volcarona): VICTINI
Victini's appearance, both its normal and Shiny form alike, seems to be based on うさぎリンゴ usagi-ringo, a method of cutting apple slices to make them look similar to rabbits. Conceptually, it might draw inspiration from Nike, the Greek, winged goddess of victory, or Victoria, the Roman equivalent of Nike. Its tail wings may be a reference to Nike's wings. It also resembles the fennec fox.
Its theme of "V" could possibly be linked to it being somewhat of the fifth Generation's mascot, "V" being the Roman numeral for 5.

Victini may be a combination of victory and destiny, teeny, or tiny.
Now here's a Pokemon that everyone should give a try, Victini. Being the fairy-like legendary of Gen 5, Victini shows what can truly happen if you have a confident outlook on cuddling. Victini possesses the ability to transfer some kind of strange power to whatever it touches. This strange power can cause any being to have unnatural abilities for a short time. Not only is Victini incredibly cute, but it also is solid in battle, with a BST of 600, Victory Star, and a good movepool with V-create, Bolt Strike, Brick Break, U-turn, Trick, Flare Blitz, Searing Shot, Blue Flare, Focus Blast, Thunder, Thunderbolt, Glaciate, Trick Room, and Final Gambit. Victini will put you to victory if you take the effort to train one properly.

talonflame_by_skia-d68uvsf.jpg

GEN 6: TALONFLAME
Although its pre-evolutions are most similar to robins, Talonflame is based primarily on the peregrine falcon, with some traits from other birds of prey that may have served as inspiration.

Talonflame is a combination of talon and flame.
Falcons are awesome, and Talonflame is no exception. It can fly as fast as 310 miles per hour, and it showers embers from its feathers while flying. It has great battling capabilities as well, with a BST of 499, Flame Body, Gale Wings, and a good movepool with Acrobatics, Flare Blitz, Roost, Swords Dance, and U-turn. Talonflame is definitely a cool-looking bird, and besides, who wouldn't want to have a falcon?

Gyarados_anime.png

GEN 1 (Excluding Dragonite): GYARADOS
It appears to be based on a sea dragon or sea serpent. Gyarados is partially based on a legend about how carp that leapt over the Dragon Gate would become dragons. Several waterfalls and cataracts in China are believed to be the location of the Dragon Gate. This is referenced by Pokémon Snap, as the player needs to get a Magikarp into a waterfall to evolve it into Gyarados. This legend is an allegory of the drive and efforts needed to overcome obstacles (which can be tied to the fact that Gyarados' pre-evolution, Magikarp, could possibly take a lot of drive and effort to legitimately evolve into Gyarados).
Its Flying-type may be a reference of koinobori, a carp-shaped wind sock traditionally flown to celebrate the Children's Day in Japan, formerly called Tango no Sekku (端午の節句).

Gyarados may derive from 虐殺 gyakusatsu (massacre/slaughter) or 逆境 gyakkyō (hardship/adversity)—both words relate to the creature's violent nature and the hardship it experienced before evolving. In addition, 逆 gyaku means "reverse" or "contrary", possibly referencing on how it evolves from a pathetically weak Pokémon to one capable of destroying entire cities and how in legend that the carp goes against the flow of the waterfall in order to reach the top. It may also involve 嵐 arashi (storm) or 争い arasoi (conflict, referencing on how it appeared during wars). The last part may be from ドス dosu (onomatopoeia for the piercing of flesh, again owing to Gyarados' violent nature). Alternatively, dos may indicate that it is the second in its evolutionary line.
For something that's called the Atrocious Pokemon, it excels in both design and battling. It has scales harder than steel and fangs that can crush stones. Its menacing appearance is something that I admire about it, considering that it is violence-happy. It has a BST of 540, Intimidate, Moxie, and a great movepool with Substitute, Taunt, Dragon Dance, Waterfall, Bounce, Stone Edge, Earthquake, Ice Fang, Rest, Sleep Talk, Roar, Dragon Tail, Aqua Tail, and Double-Edge. In XY, it also gets a more sinister Mega Evolution. Gyarados is definitely one of the coolest Flying-types in Gen 1.

Barry_Skarmory.png

GEN 2: SKARMORY
Skarmory has much in common with the Andean Condor and also shares characteristics of Pteranodons, and cranes, birds which are held in high esteem in Japan. It is also similar to many mythological, metallic birds such as the Stymphalian birds, the Gagana, and the Alicanto. Skarmory is also believed to be based on an armored knight.

Skarmory is a combination of sky and armory or armor. It may also include scar, given how its sharp body could easily wound its prey and even leave them with scars; scar may also refer to Skarmory's own skin, being cut repeatedly in brambles when it is young and building up the harder, callused or scar-like tissue which makes up its steely hide as an adult.
We have yet another fan favorite, Skarmory. To be honest, I completely understand why everyone likes Skarmory. When it comes right down to it, Skarmory is one tough bird, being the placeholder for the highest Defense of all Flying-types, Skarmory is one I highly recommend. It's a bird made of steel! Being made of steel, Skarmory's Defense is ridiculously high, the maximum being 416. That is insane. It has a BST of 465, Sturdy, and a good movepool with Spikes, Roost, Whirlwind, Brave Bird, Taunt, and Stealth Rock. Skarmory has kidnapped more Pokemon and people in the anime than any other Pokemon. It's kidnapped Jessie's Wobbuffet, May, an Azumarill, Meowth, and in the Mystery Dungeon special, it also kidnapped Diglett, Pichu, and Pikachu. Wow. A persistent kidnapper bird.

Silver_Salamence.png

GEN 3: SALAMENCE
Salamence appears to be based on European dragons.

Salamence may be a combination of salamander and menace, vengeance, vehemence, or violence (in regard to its brutal nature).
Salamence is one cool dragon.  Being formed from a strong desire of flight, this Pokemon shows just how deadly a Flying-type could be in Hoenn, being a pseudo-legendary with a BST of 600, Intimidate, Moxie, and a good movepool with Outrage, Dragon Claw, Earthquake, Fire Blast, Aqua Tail, Dragon Dance, Hydro Pump, and Draco Meteor. Salamence is one awesome menace that lives up to its statements.

Ash_Gliscor.png

GEN 4: GLISCOR
It shares physical traits with gargoyles, scorpions and vampires (which share traits with bats). It is likely based on the scorpionfly.

Gliscor and Glion are a combination of glide and scorpion.
Gliscor is one Pokemon that continuously appeals better to me as Pokemon generations evolve. When talking about Gliscor, I'd have to give credit to its appearance. With the way Gliscor looks, you think its highest stat would be Attack, right? Well, guess again. Gliscor's highest stat is Defense. It has a BST of 510, Hyper Cutter, Poison Heal, and a good movepool with Substitute, Toxic, Protect, Roost, Taunt, Earthquake, Ice Fang, U-turn, Acrobatics, Swords Dance, Agility, and Baton Pass. That being said, Gliscor is incredibly bulky. I find that strange, as real-life scorpions are an easily offensive type. In conclusion, Gliscor is one scorpion you don't wanna mess with.

Landorus_anime.png

GEN 5: LANDORUS
In Incarnate Forme, Landorus is based on the Inari, the kami of fertility. It may also have drawn inspiration from genies.
In Therian Forme, Landorus seems to be based on a predatory mammal, most likely a tiger or other large feline. It may also draw inspiration from the White Tiger of the Chinese Four Symbols constellation, or from Tezcatlipoca or Tepeyollotl, gods from the Aztec mythology that resemble a jaguar.

Landorus and Landlos are derived from land and Aeolus, ruler of the winds in Greek mythology.
Being known as the Abundance Pokemon, Landorus has an interesting concept. It can fertilize soil by using its tail. Landorus has two forms, Incarnate and Therian. Each form has different stat arrangements and different battling capabilities. Regardless, Landorus is one great Flying-type which will leave an abundant harvest for those who respect it.

Alexa_Noivern.png

GEN 6 (Excluding Talonflame): NOIVERN
Noivern seems to be based on a combination of wyvern, a fruit bat or a leaf-nosed bat, and loudspeaker or tweeter.

Noivern may be a combination of noise and wyvern.
Noivern is an example of exaggeration of a certain species' traits done in an outstanding way. It can fly through even the darkest of nights using ultrasonic waves from its loudspeaker-like ears. It's great in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 535, Frisk, Infiltrator, Telepathy, and a good movepool with Air Slash, Boomburst, Dragon Pulse, Flamethrower, Focus Blast, Hurricane, Roost, and U-turn. Now then, with all that said, time to reach for the boombox!

Fantina_Gengar.png

GEN 1: GENGAR
It seems to be simply based on general cartoonish ghosts, cats, or Cheshire Cat and possibly on a distorted shadow of a human being like shadow people.

Gengar and Gangar are possibly a shortening of doppelgänger, a double of a person, which is fitting for a Pokémon with a habit of pretending to be a person's shadow. The kanji 幻 maboroshi can also be read as gen and is used in words meaning phantom or illusion. There is also a striking pronunciation similarity to the Danish word genganger, a term for ghosts found in Scandinavian folklore.
This menacing, haunting representative of the infamous Lavender Town is the definitive ghost of Pokemon. Gengar's BST is 500. It makes for a very strong special sweeper, with its Speed reaching a maximum of 350. Of course, Gengar's main focus of power is its Special Attack, which can reach a maximum of 394, the highest of all Poison-types. Gengar also has a unique typing, with its evolutionary line being the only Ghost/Poison types. Add that to Levitate and an excellent movepool with Substitute, Disable, Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, Pain Split, Protect, Hidden Power, Trick, and Thunderbolt, and you have one great ghost. It even gets a Mega Evolution in XY. All Gengar does is haunt humans for its whole life, which is most likely for all eternity. Very mischievous. I like it.

Little_Miss.png

GEN 2: MISDREAVUS
Misdreavus' nocturnal habits of wailing to frighten people and its similarity in appearance to a disembodied head are shared by various mythological creatures. One of these is the Nukekubi, which shares the similarities of nocturnal habits, flying about as a decapitated head, and wailing to increase its victims' fright. Another possible origin is the banshee, a female spirit from Gaelic folklore who was known for its unearthly wailing and screaming. It is also possible that it was based on a langsuir, a type of vampire in Malaysian mythology known to appear as a flying decapitated female head.

Misdreavus is a corruption of mischievous. It may also be any combination of mistress, miscreant (due to the way it always scares people), dream, dread, dreary, and reave (to rob).
Well, it's the only Ghost-type that was introduced in Gen 2. Still, it's a very good Pokemon nonetheless. Being the first pure Ghost-type, it really stands out. Misdreavus has a really cute appearance, and might as well get a nomination for "cutest Ghost-type." It is known to pull pranks on people by yanking and biting their hair and shriek right on their backs. Misdreavus also has good battling skills, especially by NFE standards, with a BST of 435, Levitate, and a good movepool with Will-O-Wisp, Pain Split, Shadow Ball, Heal Bell, Taunt, and Perish Song. Misdreavus is definitely a ghost that you should consider when battling with first-stage Pokemon.

Hansen_Shedinja.png

GEN 3 (Excluding Sableye): SHEDINJA
It is based on the shed husk that cicadas leave behind when they finish their metamorphosis into adults. Concerning its species' ninja theme, it also appears to be a reference to the fabled ninjutsu technique 空蝉 utsusemi, where a ninja uses a dummy or replica of itself to evade and escape from threats, and where its namesake also alludes to the cast off shed husk of a cicada. It may also be based on a guardian angel, due to the halo-like object floating above its head. Its Ability Wonder Guard probably alludes to this.

Shedinja is a combination of shed (to cast off skin or exoskeleton) and ninja.
Shedinja is one bug with a very original concept, being a discarded shell. It can steal the spirit of anyone who stares at the crack on its back. As far as battling capabilities go, Shedinja is the riskiest Pokemon to use in battle. Despite having Wonder Guard, Shedinja is held back by only 1 HP in a BST of a mere 236. If hazards or weather are up, Shedinja is pretty much down. Despite that, it has a unique typing of Bug/Ghost and a good movepool, with X-Scissor, Shadow Sneak, Shadow Claw, Will-O-Wisp, Toxic, Protect, Heal Block, Baton Pass, and Swords Dance. Shedinja is one creative bug that really gives you a challenge if using it.

Paul_Froslass.png

GEN 4: FROSLASS
Froslass is most likely based on Yuki-onna, a female ice-spirit of Japanese folklore.

Froslass is a combination of frost and lass.
I like Froslass for a multitude of reasons. One, Froslass has an incredibly unique typing, being the only Ghost/Ice. Two, she has great battling skills, being tied for the fastest Ghost-type with Gengar, and having a BST of 480, Cursed Body, and a good movepool with Spikes, Taunt, Shadow Ball, Ice Beam, and Destiny Bond. Three, I love the way she looks. And four, she's linked to Japanese folklore. Her concept is far more original than a massive floating head covered in ice. I like the folklore reference she has, and she is one graceful Ghost-type.

Male_Jellicent_anime.png

GEN 5: JELLICENT
Jellicent and its pre-evolution were most likely inspired by the Nurarihyon, a jellyfish youkai that is either shown as a demonized jellyfish or as a jellyfish-like man who wears refined, sometimes regal, clothing. It is also possible that they were inspired by the Kurage no Hinotama, a sort of jellyfish-like will-o'-the-wisp. Its design is inspired by the jellyfish, in particular the Crown Jellyfish, and monarch attire; the male's appearance is based on a king's while the female's is based on a queen's. The Moon Jellyfish may have influenced Jellicent being a ghost type. Its dangerous ability to prey on humans, in self-defense of its habitat, is possibly based on the Box jellyfish and other highly venomous species of jellyfish that can kill humans. The two larger tentacles Jellicent possesses are more similar to those of squids than the tentacles of real jellyfish. Jellicent also has traits in common with sea monsters like the Kraken, most notably its rumored penchant for destroying ships and feeding on the crew.

Jellicent is a combination of jellyfish and magnificent or translucent.
Jellicent is just glamorous. Being a monarch jellyfish, it is very noble-like in appearance. It swims in the sea by absorbing seawater, then projecting it from its head. It can also make ships disappear, and it absorbs energy from its prey. Jellicent has a BST of 480, a unique typing in Water/Ghost, Water Absorb, Cursed Body, and a good movepool with Will-O-Wisp, Taunt, Scald, Night Shade, Shadow Ball, Recover, Toxic, Ice Beam, Water Spout, Surf, Hydro Pump, and Energy Ball. It is definitely worth of the crown that it has.

aegislash_by_theangryaron-d6rscu6.png

GEN 6: AEGISLASH
Aegislash appears to be based on a possessed sword and shield. Its disposition to sense an owner's potential as leaders and kings, appears to draw inspiration from the ideas of legendary swords of European legend, such as Excalibur and Durandal.

Aegislash is a combination of Aegis (a shield in Greek mythology) and slash.
Aegislash is just downright awesome. Being a possessed sword and shield, it is very original in its concept. Its origin is also interesting, being traced to European tales such as King Arthur. In fact, it is able to detect leadership qualities, and whoever it chooses will become king. It can also manipulate living things with its spectral powers. Aegislash has excellent battling capabilities, with a BST of 520, a unique typing in Steel/Ghost, Stance Change, and a good movepool with Autotomize, Iron Head, Sacred Sword, Shadow Claw, Shadow Sneak, Swords Dance, and its signature move, King's Shield. When it comes down to it, Aegislash is one Pokemon that is a must to have, whenever it is for its cool and creative design, or for its amazing battling capabilities, or both.

May_Venusaur.png

GEN 1: VENUSAUR
Venusaur appears to be based primarily on some form of reptile, specifically the tuatara or any of the mammal-like reptiles known as Dicynodonts from the Permian period or the Kannemeyeria from the Triassic period.
Other than a lack of a tail, and with visible ears and no genuine metamorphosis stage (evolution aside), Venusaur does not have much in common with amphibians like frogs and toads (which metamorphose from one definite creature into another as they mature as opposed to just growing into a larger adult version of itself the way that Venusaur does); instead, it more closely resembles reptiles like lizards and tuataras. Alternatively, Venusaur's large rounded snout, wide mouth, wide-set eyes, bumpy wart-like skin, and quadraped-like movements are vaguely similar to those of certain amphibians, such as the common toad. Unlike Bulbasaur, Venusaur's "ears" do have hollows indicating that they are in fact ears and not glands, as seen in many species of frogs and toads.
The flower on its back resembles the Rafflesia arnoldii.

Venusaur is a combination of the words Venus (referring to the Venus flytrap plant) and the Greek saur (lizard).
Venusaur is one of the greatest starters to date. Being a flowery dinosaur, it can take in solar energy to make its flowers more vibrant with a sweet scent, that is even stronger after rain. It has a BST of 525, Chlorophyll, and a good movepool with Growth, Giga Drain, Hidden Power, Sludge Bomb, Sleep Powder, Sunny Day, SolarBeam, Leech Seed, and Substitute. In XY, it also gets a Mega Evolution to add on to its power. Also I've got to take credit for the evolution ceremonies and the manipulation of nature in the anime. Overall, Venusaur is definitely one of Gen 1's greatest Pokemon.

Celebi_M04.png

GEN 2: CELEBI
Celebi has a natural theme.[3] Celebi might be related to nature worship of Shintoism. It may be based on a fairy, dryad, or the kodama. Its fierce protectiveness for its forest home resembles that of the Curupira.

Celebi may be a combination of celestial and being, or it may be a combination of serenity and 美 bi (beauty).
Celebi is another legendary pixie, and is just as cute as the rest of them. Being the Voice of the Forest, it can travel through time and make plant life flourish. It has a BST of 600, Natural Cure, and a phenomenal movepool with Giga Drain, Psychic, Recover, Baton Pass, U-turn, Perish Song, Thunder Wave, Stealth Rock, Nasty Plot, Calm Mind, Substitute, Leaf Storm, Earth Power, Hidden Power, and Trick. Celebi is so popular that it is the mascot of Serebii.net and it is a main Pokemon in two movies: Celebi: Voice of the Forest and Zoroark: Master of Illusions. And. I say with its cute appearance and great battling capabilities, I say it deserves its popularity.

Kenny_Breloom.png

GEN 3: BRELOOM
Breloom is based on a mushroom and its body structure resembles that of a kangaroo. The shapes of its head and tail resemble that of the armored dinosaurs, Pachycephalosaurus and Ankylosaurus, respectively.

Breloom may be a combination of umbrella and mushroom. In Latin, bellum means war, perhaps a nod to its Fighting type.
Breloom is a very good Pokemon with a BST of 460. Attack-wise, it's a beast. Its Attack can get as high as 394, making it the strongest physical Grass-type ever. Breloom also has some awesome abilties in Poison Heal and Technician. Its movepool is also great, with moves like Low Sweep, Mach Punch, Bullet Seed, Spore, Stone Edge, Swords Dance, Leech Seed, Protect, Drain Punch, Force Palm, Substitute, Focus Punch, Seed Bomb, and Facade. Bottom line, Breloom is one of the best Grass-types you could have, as well as the best in all of fungi.

Candice_Abomasnow.png

GEN 4: ABOMASNOW
Abomasnow appears to be based on a cross between an evergreen tree covered in snow and a yeti.

Abomasnow is a shortening of the term Abominable Snowman, another name for the yeti.
Abomasnow is one unique Pokemon. Being a winter tree that can cover wide areas with a blizzard, it is an inspiration to behold. It has a BST of 494, a unique typing in Grass/Ice, Snow Warning, and a good movepool with Wood Hammer, Ice Shard, Hidden Power, Protect, Earthquake, and Leech Seed. In XY, it also gets a Mega Evolution that is just as good. When it comes down to it, Abomasnow really shines among the Gen 4 Grass-types.

Officer_Jenny_Ferrothorn.png

GEN 5: FERROTHORN
It appears to be based on durian plants. Its vines resemble military flails. The vines also resemble a fully-grown brier plant, just as its unevolved form resembles a seed. It could also be based on the tribulus, which is a species of thorny plants whose name, during Roman times, also meant caltrops, which is a thorny metallic weapon used to puncture the feet of invading soldiers. Also, the "tri-" in tribulus means "three", which is also the same number of pods Ferrothorn has.

Ferrothorn is a combination of ferrum (Latin for iron) or ferro (Portuguese and Italian for iron) and thorn (a protective spine found on many plants).
Ferrothorn is unlike any Grass-type I've ever seen. Unlike most Grass-types, it is ridiculously defensive both physically and specially. If you're looking for a good defensive wall, it's definitely at the top of my recommendations. Ferrothorn's BST is 489. It may not seem like much, but believe me, this is a Pokemon you mustn't underestimate in the slightest. Ferrothorn's Defense is the highest of any Grass-type, reaching a maximum of 397. Its Special Defense is also abnormal, reaching a maximum of 364. Despite having terrible Speed, Ferrothorn can basically wall any Pokemon not carrying a Fire- or Fighting-type attack or boost that goes against it, especially with its unique typing of Grass/Steel. Armed with those amazing defenses, it's wise to set up layers of Spikes and Stealth Rock to plague your opponent's battle arena while your Ferrothorn remains out. Some other great moves that it can learn are Leech Seed, Power Whip, Protect, Gyro Ball, Thunder Wave, Bulldoze, and Explosion. As you would expect from looking at this thing, Ferrothorn is a Pokemon you really don't wanna give a hug to. Aside from its vine pods that resemble army flails, Ferrothorn's spiky body is a hazard all its own. Its signature ability is Iron Barbs. So here's my ending statement: if you're looking for a good Grass-type, then get a Ferrothorn. Trust me; you will not regret having one.

trevenant_by_tomycase-d6vmqft.png

GEN 6: TREVENANT
Trevenant is probably based on a kodama, the spirits of trees that sometimes inhabit old aged trees. Its stripe-like indentation on its body is very similar to shimenawa, used to mark spiritual habitation, who are often seen tied around kodama. It is also similar to other types of tree and nature spirits and deities, such as dryads. Trevenant's fierce protection of forests may be a reference to hamadryad, or could perhaps be a nod to the concept of protected sacred groves. Its single eye may possibly be a reference to cyclopes or the mountain dwelling yamawarawa. Its general body shape may have been based on the shape of the symbol 木, meaning wood or tree.

Trevenant is a combination of tree (or possibly treant) and revenant.
Trevenant really puts the idea of haunted trees very well, as it actually looks like something you might find in Halloween films. Having the power to control trees, it can use branches and vines to ensnare people that harm the forest. That will teach you to not mess with it. It has BST of 474, Natural Cure, Frisk, Harvest, and a good movepool with Earthquake, Facade, Frustration, Horn Leech, Poison Jab, Return, Rock Slide, Shadow Claw, Wood Hammer, X-Scissor, and its signature move, Forest's Curse. Trevenant is very creative, and with its great battling skills, you can assure that it will show the true wrath of nature.

GEN 1: DUGTRIO
Dugtrio appears to be very similar to the artificial moles used in the Whac-A-Mole arcade games.

Dugtrio is a combination of dug (past tense of dig) and trio (a group of three).
Dugtrio is an interesting case. Its three heads cooperate by bobbing up and down to loosen the soil in order to burrow. It can burrow as fast as 60 mph to a depth of 60mi, causing earthquakes. Dugtrio is also very environmental, planting trees through its loosening of the soil. It has great battling skills, with a BST of 405, Arena Trap, and a good movepool with Reversal, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Stealth Rock, Memento, and Sucker Punch. Also, you just got to admire the comic relief that Dugtrio provides.

Ash_Donphan.png

GEN 2: DONPHAN
It appears to have been based on an adult elephant, although it resembles the tire of an automobile when curled up or using its trademark Rollout attack. As both Phanpy and Donphan are much smaller compared to humans than conventional African or Asian elephants, they may have actually been inspired by the dwarf elephant or pygmy elephant.

Donphan and Donfan are a combination of don and elephant. Don may refer to lord; a root word meaning teeth, referring to its tusks; or mastodon, a prehistoric elephant. Don may have also been included to reflect Donphan's robust physique and great strength, especially in comparison to Phanpy.
Donphan is certainly different from those circus elephants that you see. It can curl up into a ball, and roll around with so much force that it can knock down an entire house. It is also able to detect amberite, and it has an interesting ranking system, where a high rank is determined by large tusks. It is also great in battle, with a BST of 500, Sturdy, and a good movepool with Rapid Spin, Earthquake, Stealth Rock, and Ice Shard. Also, another interesting fact about Donphan is that male Donphan participate in rolling competitions to show females their toughness. Now that's a tough elephant.

Groudon_anime.png

GEN 3: GROUDON
Groudon is modeled after the Earth's land and volcanoes and is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of Behemoth, the unconquerable primal master of the land. Its counterparts were Leviathan and Ziz. Just as Groudon is in conflict with Kyogre, it was said that at the end of time, Behemoth and Leviathan would start a battle that would kill them both. However, the Behemoth is usually depicted as a warthog/hippopotamus-like creature; in the same way, Kyogre is not based on traditional depictions of the Leviathan.
Instead, Groudon is based on a dinosaur of some kind. Its appearance seems to have drawn inspiration from the Tyrannosaurus and from various species of Ankylosauria, such as Euoplocephalus.

Groudon may be a combination of ground and don (Spanish for lord). Don also means tooth in Ancient Greek and is commonly used in dinosaur names, which Groudon somewhat resembles. It may also involve 土 do (ground) or ドン don (onomatopoeia for a very loud crashing noise).
In all honesty, Groudon is my least favorite member of the weather trio. That's not to say I don't like Groudon. Like almost every other mascot legendary, Groudon has Uber stats. It has a BST of 670, it is the only legendary to have Drought, and its two greatest stats are Attack and Defense. Seeing that it's known as the Continent Pokemon, it's easy to see why that is. Groudon has the highest Attack and BST of all Ground-types, which is rightfully so, considering that Groudon is the only legendary with a Ground type, aside from Landorus. Groudon's Attack can reach a maximum of 438, and its Defense can even get as high as 416. Sweet Arceus... Groudon is the heaviest Pokemon in existence, weighing in at 2,095 lbs. Also, Groudon's movepool is pretty complex. It can learn moves like Earthquake, Stone Edge, Fire Blast, Stealth Rock, Dragon Tail, Thunder Wave, Toxic, Rock Polish, Dragon Claw, Swords Dance, Overheat, and Fire Punch. It's easy to see why Team Magma wants Groudon so badly.

Bertha_Hippowdon.png

GEN 4 (Excluding Garchomp): HIPPOWDON
Hippowdon is based on a hippopotamus. Because of the spouts upon its back that constantly spit sands, Hippowdon and its preevolution may be based upon the legendary Bahamut as, in some accounts of the myths behind it, it is said to support a bed of sand and have the head of a hippo.

Hippowdon is a combination of hippopotamus, power, powder (as in sand), or pow (onomatopoeia for a bodily hit), and don (Spanish for lord; Ancient Greek for tooth).
Hippowdon is one massive Pokemon. Being known as the Heavyweight Pokemon, strength is always a plus for me. It can create twisters by releasing sand, and can crush cars with its massive jaws. It is outstanding in battles, with a BST of 525, Sand Stream, and a good movepool with Slack Off, Earthquake, Stealth Rock, Ice Fang, and Whirlwind. Hippowdon is definitely filled with tons of capability and charm.

Iris_Excadrill.png

GEN 5: EXCADRILL
Excadrill is based on a mole with characteristics of digging tools such as shovels and drills.

Excadrill might be a combination of excavate and drill.
Oh boy, you know it! Excadrill is pure awesome. Being a popular choice among Gen 5 players, Excadrill is a subterranean, bipedal, mole-like monster capable of drilling through ridiculously thick iron slabs. This mole makes Major Burrows look like a baby Diglett. Being one of the only two Ground/Steel types, Excadrill makes for one of the strongest Unova Pokemon you could possibly have. How so? Well, let's dive into statistics. Excadrill's BST is 508. At first glance, it's easy to see why Excadrill's greatest stat is Attack. Excadrill's Attack can reach a maximum of 405, which is equivalent to that of Escavalier and even Metagross. If an Excadrill gives you a dirty look, then that's when you know you're doomed. Much like Blaziken, Excadrill was considered Uber in Gen 5. You're probably wondering: "How can that be? After all, its BST is lower than that of all the starters." Well, allow me to explain. The reason Excadrill is so dangerous is because of its ability, Sand Rush. If you have an Excadrill with max Speed sent out in a sandstorm, it's guaranteed to move first, with the exception of some priority moves. In a sandstorm, a Sand Rush Excadrill's Speed can reach a maximum of 604! That's faster than any Pokemon in the entire franchise unboosted. In a nutshell, Excadrill is a terrifying sweeper, as its typing also ensures that it's immune to both Toxic and Thunder Wave. Need I mention Swords Dance, Rapid Spin, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Substitute, Iron Head, and Shadow Claw? Now that I've talked about how strong Excadrill is, let's talk about appearance. Do I even need to say anything about its appearance? I mean, just look at it! There's nothing too special about its concept, but hey, it's a mole, and moles are pretty awesome. You can't go wrong there, can you? It looks awesome, it's ridiculosuly tough, and it's a mole, for Arceus's sake! Keep on trucking, Excadrill. You're the boss.

diggersby_is_love__diggersby_is_life_by_le_the_creator-d6rwi2s.png

GEN 6: DIGGERSBY
Diggersby is based on a rabbit. Considering its ability to use its ears as powerful digging and excavating tools, as well as the fact that it hangs out at construction sites, Diggersby is probably based on an excavator and possibly other heavy equipment. The brown fur on its ears resembles excavated dirt or mud. Its tendency to laze about after working, as well as its brown "five o'clock shadow" and mud-like markings, may also mean Diggersby is based on construction workers as well.

Diggersby may be a combination of digger and bunny.
Diggersby is a Pokemon that I've grown into. No, not just because of an internet meme that spread across the community, but also because just how original it is. Diggersby is so strong that it can lift boulders with its ears and can smash through the hardest of slabs. It has a BST of 423, a unique typing in Normal/Ground, Pickup, Cheek Pouch, Huge Power, and a good movepool with Bounce, Brick Break, Earthquake, Facade, Flail, Frustration, Hammer Arm, Payback, Quick Attack, Return, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Super Fang, U-turn, and Wild Charge. Diggersby is one cool rabbit.

Mateo_Cloyster.png

GEN 1: CLOYSTER
It appears to be based on a bivalve, more specifically the genus Spondylus, with a black pearl as its head.

Cloyster is a pun on cloister (to seclude or shelter oneself) which contains the word oyster, or is a portmanteau of clam and oyster.
Cloyster is certainly one tough clam. Its shell is a lot harder than even diamond with even harder spikes. Apparently it is able to withstand detonated bombs and even missle strikes. You just got to admire that toughness. It has a BST of 525, Skill Link, and a good movepool with Shell Smash, Icicle Spear, Rock Blast, Ice Shard, Razor Shell, and Hydro Pump. Cloyster is definitely one smashing shell that stands out as a Gen 1 Ice-type.

Dawn_Piloswine.png

GEN 2: PILOSWINE
Piloswine's size and appearance seem to be based off a mix of a yak, whose mountainous habitat echoes that of the Ice Path in Northern Johto, and a boar. It also share traits with mastodons and mammoths the latter of which is expressed in its later evolution.

Piloswine is a combination of pilose (to be covered in distinct hairs) and swine.
Piloswine is just so strong, especially for an NFE, with that thick fur protecting it from the freezing cold, and a nose that rivals even bloodhounds. It apparently can charge without slipping despite having short legs. It has a BST of 450, Thick Fat, and a good movepool with Icicle Crash, Icicle Spear, Earthquake, Stealth Rock, Stone Edge, Superpower, Endeavor, and Ice Shard. Also, in the anime, Piloswine provides plenty of comic relief, whenever from getting tired and causing a Gym Leader to forfeit or sending a Coordinator's Piplup flying in the sky.

Katie_Walrein.png

GEN 3: WALREIN
Walrein is based on a walrus.

Walrein may be a combination of walrus and a misspelling of rain or reign.
Walruses are interesting animals with those huge tusks. Walrein is no exception, as it has a thick layer of blubber that insulates it from the cold and deflects enemy attacks, and tusks that are able to crush ice, which makes sense seeing that it's the Ice Break Pokemon. It has a BST of 530, Ice Body, and a good movepool with Substitute, Protect, Blizzard, Surf, Roar, and Toxic. In a nutshell, Walrein is one Ice-type that stands out among other ones in Gen 3, and is definitely more interesting than a floating ice head.

Dawn_Mamoswine.png

GEN 4: MAMOSWINE
Mamoswine appears to be based on a combination of a woolly mammoth and a boar.

Mamoswine is a combination of mammoth and swine.
The Ice Age has got to have a reference somewhere. Mamoswine is so strong that it can survive millenias of sheer cold. It has a BST of 530, Thick Fat, and every move that Piloswine can learn. Mamoswine in the anime is oretty much the exact same comedy as Piloswine, causing Dawn some distress in trying to train it and settle it down.

Georgia_Beartic.png

GEN 5 (Excluding Kyurem): BEARTIC
Beartic is based on the polar bear, a species of bear found primarily in the Arctic Circle.

Beartic is a combination of bear, or possibly beard, and arctic. Notably, arctic itself derives from ἄρκτος arktos, Ancient Greek for bear.
Finally we have an actual polar bear Pokemon. Polar bears are one of the coolest bears I've ever heard of. Beartic is very skilled at swimming, and can even freeze air on its fangs and claws to make it stronger. It has a BST of 485, Swift Swim, and a good movepool with Swords Dance, Icicle Crash, Low Kick, Superpower, and Encore. With all that said, Beartic is an absolute beast and is definitely worth having as a Gen 5 Ice-type. And besides, how much more awesome can you get when you're a polar bear?

avalugg_by_spikeheila-d6sr1uw.jpg

GEN 6: AVALUGG
Avalugg appears to be based on an iceberg or a stalactite. It may be a representation of the submerged part of the iceberg, which is immense in comparison with the tip. It may also be based on an aircraft carrier. Its body also somewhat resembles a tortoise, or perhaps a rhinoceros or cerapod.

Avalugg may be a combination of avalanche and lug (to carry or drag heavy objects) or "lugg", which means 'pile' in Norwegian.
Avalugg is quite interesting. Being an iceberg, its appearance is symmetrical, which is a nice touch. It is very durable, and it can crush anything in its way. Doesn't it remind anyone of Titanic? Avalugg has a BST of 514, Own Tempo, Ice Body, Sturdy, and a good movepool with Avalanche, Crunch, Double-Edge, Earthquake, Facade, Frustration, Gyro Ball, Ice Fang, Rapid Spin, Return, Rock Slide, and Stone Edge. Don't ever steer your ship towards an Avalugg, unless you want to get sunk.

Brock_Chansey.png

GEN 1: CHANSEY
Chansey's tendency to carry eggs in a pouch is very monotreme- or marsupial-like. It may also just be based on a general concept of females and motherhood. As its Pokédex entries mention its tendency to lay nutritious eggs everyday, Chansey may also be based on chickens or other poultry fowls.

Chansey is a corruption of chance and chancy. It may refer to Chansey's rarity and/or the chance of a successful catch.
As far as cute Gen 1 Normal types go, none of them top the lucky being that is Chansey, or as I refer to it, "Eat Your Heart Out Jigglypuff." Chansey lays eggs to give to injured people and Pokemon, and the more caring one is to Chansey, the tastier its eggs. If you ever find a Chansey, catch it, as not only will you gain good luck and happiness, but also a great supporter on your team. It has BST of 450, Natural Cure, and a good movepool with Softboiled, Wish, Aromatherapy, Protect, Toxic, Seismic Toss, Thunder Wave, and Flamethrower. Chansey is definitely one of the better Gen 1 NFEs to use.

EP129.png

GEN 2: BLISSEY
Blissey appears to be based on a nurse. Design-wise, it appears to have some physical similarities to Nurse Joy from the anime in both color and hair.

Blissey derives from bliss (happiness), combined with the suffix sey from Chansey, her pre-evolution.
Blissey is just as cute and just as useful as Chansey. Its curls are able to detect sadness, and eating an egg from its pouch will bring forth happiness and compassion. It will rush to any sick or sad being and nurse it back to health. Kinda makes you think of Nurse Joy, doesn't it? Blissey has a BST of 540, Natural Cure, and every move that Chansey can learn. With that said, Blissey is one magnificent Gen 2 Normal-type.

Blackbelt_Zangoose.png

GEN 3: ZANGOOSE
Zangoose, as its name implies, is based on a mongoose, as well as cats. It bears the most physical resemblance to the Angolan and Persian breeds. The rivalry it shares with Seviper is based on the relationship between both cats and mongooses towards snakes.

Zangoose is a combination of 刪 san (cut down) and mongoose (a small, cat-like carnivore that is well known for its ability to hunt and kill venomous snakes). It may also derive from 残痕 zankon (scar, due to the markings in its body).
Zangoose is a strange case for quite a number of reasons. The first odd thing you'd notice about Zangoose is its typing and stats. Zangoose's BST is 458. How can this be? It doesn't evolve, it's a mono-Normal type, and it doesn't suck? How is this possible? Now this is a good single-evolution Normal-type from Gen 3. Also, I love both its Hidden ability and appearance. Its ability is Toxic Boost, meaning that Poison-types really cry in fear. It also has a good movepool with Facade, Close Combat, Night Slash, Swords Dance, and Quick Attack. Lastly, it's appearance. Just look at that scar. To me, that scar just says, "I'm cranky, I'm hungry, and I've been to the edge of the abyss and back. Don't mess with me." What an awesome Pokemon.

Ash_Staraptor.png

GEN 4: STARAPTOR
Staraptor is based on the white-cheeked starling, a common species of bird found throughout Asia, combined with a bird of prey. Although it largely resembles the starling in appearance, much of its inspiration comes from hawks and falcons, particularly its predatory nature and aerial speed. It also has strong similarities to the harpy eagle. The feathers hanging over its face are similar to the long-crested eagle.

Staraptor is a combination of starling and raptor (a predatory bird).
Oh, heck yes! When it comes to Normal/Flying types, I could think of none more awesome than the extremely predacious monster of a starling, Staraptor. Out of all the obligatory bird Pokemon, Staraptor is definitely my favorite out of all of them. Whenever I play a Gen 4 game, I always have Staraptor as my Normal-type, no second thoughts whatsoever. As a Pokemon, Staraptor is an independent bird of prey with a taste of brutality. Armed with a savage nature and a scythe-shaped cone on top of its head, Staraptor will courageously challenge any foe, even if it is larger than itself. Wow, that's an extreme determination you have there. While Staraptor evolves from a pathetic little starling, it seems to share more characteristics of a falcon rather than a puny little starling. As you would expect from its appearance, Staraptor is one bird that you don't want to tick. Being a bird of prey, Staraptor makes for a pretty strong Normal-type. Staraptor's BST is 475, can have the ability Reckless, and its Attack can reach a maximum of 372. Staraptor is also pretty fast, with its Speed reaching a maximum of 328. Its movepool should also be taken into account, as there are some interesting things to know. For the most part, Staraptor's moveset seems to be just like that of any other bird Pokemon, but thanks to its predacious behavior, Staraptor is the only Flying-type that is able to learn Close Combat, and it can also learn Brave Bird, Double-Edge, U-turn, Roost, and Quick Attack. In conclusion, Staraptor looks awesome, has savage fighting spirit, and is basically a Caterpie's worst nightmare.

Meloetta_Aria_Forme_anime.png

GEN 5: MELOETTA
Meloetta's Aria Forme resembles a typical singer with the black headpiece acting like a headset microphone, while the Pirouette Forme resembles a ballerina wearing a tutu and its "hair" curled up in a bun. In this Forme it also shares elements from Spanish Flamenco dancers. Meloetta's headpiece resembles a stylized treble clef. It may be also based on a muse, a mythological entity to whom was attributed, in Ancient Greece, the ability to inspire artistic creation.

Meloetta may be a combination of melody and pirouette (a type of movement in ballet). Etta is also a common, feminine Italian suffix meaning little and may refer to Meloetta's feminine appearance and diminutive size. It may literally mean little melody, as Italian words are commonly used for musical directions and descriptions. Etta could also have derived from the famous jazz singer Etta James.
Aria is a term now used almost exclusively to describe a self-contained piece for one voice usually with orchestral accompaniment, and is commonly used in opera.
Pirouette—French for to whirl—is a controlled turn on one leg, starting with one or both legs in plié and rising onto demi-pointe (usually for men) or pointe (usually for women). The non-supporting leg can be held in retiré position, or in attitude, arabesque level or second position.
By now, most of you were expecting her to show up on this activity, and gosh darn it, she does deserve it! With every new generation that gets released, Meloetta continues to be a Pokemon that I am always happy to see. Similar to the case with Rayquaza, I feel like her growing popularity is a good thing as I feel that everyone should at least like or respect her. I always wanted a great music-themed Pokemon to be created. Then Gen 5 came out, and the result was beyond what I wanted. BST of 600 and Serene Grace. Her movepool is gargantuan, with moves like Close Combat, Thunder, Shadow Ball, Hidden Power, Psychic, and Ice Punch. She also has a signature move, Relic Song, which allows her to change between two forms: Aria and Pirouette. The typing changes between forms too, adding a layer of strategy. There are even more reasons why I like Meloetta, but that will come on another day, because let's face it, you know she'll show up more than once on this monthly event.

prideful_pyroar_by_super_tuler-d6lz5ni.png

GEN 6 (Excluding Diggersby and Heliolisk): PYROAR
Pyroar is based on a lion. The style of its fur, in particular the spiked areas on its limbs and tail, more than likely is a reference to stylized lions in heraldry and coat of arms. The yellow pattern on the mane of a male Pyroar is similar in shape to the Daimonji, a bonfire lit during the Japanese festival Gozan no Okuribi in the shape of the symbol 大 (meaning great or large).

Pyroar may be a combination of pyro and roar.
Being known as the Royal Pokemon, Pyroar is proof that a Pokemon can look both majestic and cool at the same time. Its breath can reach a maximum temperature of over 10,000°F. That's beyond hot. Pyroar has BST of 507, Rivalry, Unnerve, Moxie, and a good movepool with Dark Pulse, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Hidden Power, Hyper Voice, Overheat, Solar Beam, and its signature move, Noble Roar. Pyroar is a Pokemon that sorta reminds you of Disney, and I like it for recalling some childhood memories.

Tentacruel_Poison_Sting.png

GEN 1 (Excluding Gengar): TENTACRUEL
Tentacruel is similar to the Portuguese man o' war, which is not a jellyfish but a cluster of polyps. It also shares some characteristics of a squid.

Tentacruel is a combination of tentacle and cruel or ruler (referencing it as the line's final evolutionary stage).
Tentacruel is one treacherous sea monster, with two crystal spheres that refract sunlight and store energy. One cool thing to note is that it has a whopping 80 tentacles. Now that is one dangerous jellyfish. Being known as the Gangster of the Sea, it will poison anyone who steps in its territory. Tentacruel has a BST of 515, Rain Dish, and a good movepool with Rapid Spin, Toxic, Toxic Spikes, Scald, Protect, and Substitute. With all that said, sea monsters from horror movies are so thrilling to look at, and Tentacruel is no exception.

Brock_Crobat.png

GEN 2: CROBAT
Crobat is based on a bat.

Crobat may be a combination of cross and bat. Alternatively, it may be a corruption of acrobat, describing Crobat's maneuverability in the air.
Crobat, to me, is a perfect example of a Pokemon that gets to me for some odd reason. First off, it feels so rewarding to finally get one. After all, it's a huge pain to get a Golbat to evolve, at least for me anyway. Talk about impossible, how can a Pokemon reach max happiness when their 32-bit master dumps them into a ridiculously small Poke Ball? Harsh love, I take it. Plain and simple, I love Crobat's design. Thanks to all that harsh love, Crobat has basically lost its ability to walk and instead gained the ability to fly fast, very fast. Crobat's Speed can reach a maximum of 394, making it the absolute fastest Poison-type. But wait, there's more. With a BST of 535, Crobat has the highest BST of all Poison-types. In addition to this, Crobat has a unique typing in Poison/Flying, Inner Focus, and an learn some awesome moves, such as Taunt, Roost, Brave Bird, Super Fang, and Toxic. So, the next time you see a Zubat, just remember that it will one day become one of the strongest Poison-types.

Drew_Roselia.png

GEN 3: ROSELIA
Roselia are based on rose bushes.

Roselia is a combination of rose and azalea or buddleia.
For an NFE, Roselia excels. Being known as the Thorn Pokemon, it has a very pleasant scent, and its appearance is beautiful, especially by NFE standards. That doesn't mean that it isn't formidable, as its thorns will tell you otherwise. Roselia has BST of 400, Natural Cure, and a good movepool with Spikes, Giga Drain, Sludge Bomb, Synthesis, Rest, and Toxic Spikes. Roselia is a Pokemon that I admire for its power and appearance. Just don't pick those flowers. You will regret it.

DP069.png

GEN 4: TOXICROAK
Toxicroak may have been based on the poison dart frog. The claws on its hands may be inspired by the hairy frog, which defends itself by breaking its own toes and projecting sharpened bones from its skin.

Toxicroak is a combination of toxic and croak.
Toxicroak is one of the better Pokemon you can get at the Great Marsh. Being a poisonous frog, it is armed with venomous claws that can poison you by just a simple scratch. Toxicroak BST of 490, a unique typing in Poison/Fighting, Dry Skin, and a good movepool with Swords Dance, Drain Punch, Sucker Punch, Ice Punch, Bulk Up, Substitute, Focus Punch, Payback, Toxic, and Protect. If you like the rain, which I do, then Toxicroak is a must to have.

James_Amoonguss.png

GEN 5: AMOONGUSS
It appears to be based on Amanita muscaria or mushrooms of the Agaricus genus, due to it being Poison-type. Its cap and the shield-like arms were designed to look like the front of a Poké Ball.

Amoonguss may be a combination of amanita (a genus of mushroom) and fungus or humongous (huge). Together with its evolution, their names are a corruption of the phrase, "Fungus among us."
When it comes to Poke Ball impersonators, none could come close to topping Amoonguss. Being a Poke Ball mushroom, it can use its Poke Ball-like hands to lure in prey. Eat your heart out, Electrode. Amoonguss has a BST of 464, Regenerator, and a good movepool with Spore, Giga Drain, Hidden Power, Sludge Bomb, Stun Spore, and Clear Smog. If you're looking for a good Poison-type in Gen 5, check any Poke Ball in the ground. It might turn out to be a valuable member to your team.

dragalge_by_vkarend-d6swfh5.png

GEN 6: DRAGALGE
Dragalge appears to be based on a leafy seadragon.

Dragalge is a combination of dragon and algae.
Well, it's the only fully evolved Poison-type in Gen 6. Still, Dragalge's appearance is just so beautiful to look at, considering it's a seahorse. Its poison is so strong that it can even corrode military battleships, and any ship that tries to barge into Dragalge territory will never be seen again. Now that's something you don't want to mess up with. Dragalge has a BST of 494, a unique typing in Poison/Dragon, Poison Point, Poison Touch, Adaptability, and a good movepool with Draco Meteor, Dragon Pulse, Focus Blast, Hidden Power, Hydro Pump, Scald, Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Surf, Thunder, and Thunderbolt. In a nutshell, Dragalge is one marvelous Pokemon, in both appearance and power.

GEN 1: ALAKAZAM
Alakazam is based on a magician and also a spoon bender. It also shares similarities to goats and foxes, both animals with ties to magic.

Alakazam is an incantation used in stage magic, similar to Abracadabra.
When it comes to Gen 1 Psychic-types, four of them stick out: Mew, Mewtwo, Starmie, and the Psi Pokemon, Alakazam. Having an IQ of more than 5000, it can remember anything it has experienced. Now that's smart. It has a BST of 490, Magic Guard, and an impeccable movepool with Psyshock, Psychic, Focus Blast, Signal Beam, Hidden Power, Substitute, and its signature move, Kinesis. In XY, it also gets a Mega Evolution, which is even more impressive in terms of appearance. The Gen 1 Psychic-types all have impressive appearances and strength, and Alakazam is no exception.

Calista_Johto_Xatu.png

GEN 2: XATU
It seems to be based on a Resplendent Quetzal with design elements from a Native American totem or kachina. Behavior wise, it displays the ancient art of Sun Gazing, a form of spiritual meditation practiced by the Aztec and Mayan in the belief it would give them supernatural power referenced by the fact that Xatu is part Psychic.

Xatu may derive from X (as in exotic, referring to its appearance) and Atu (the first man in Samoan mythology).
Xatu is a very, very strange Pokemon, even for a Psychic-type. As you can tell, Xatu has the look and motion of a substitute dummy. It barely moves at all. According to various Pokedex entries, Xatu stands rooted in one spot all day because it daily views both the past and the future at the same time, and each time period is viewed with a different eye. Well, I don't know about you, but I find that crazy. In battle, Xatu is overall pretty good. Its stats are mostly well balanced, but it does get an edge in both Special Attack and Speed, which is a plus. It has a BST of 470, Magic Bounce, and a good movepool with Toxic, Roost, Heat Wave, Night Shade, and U-turn. I just find Xatu very interesting, and that's all the reasons i need to have on here.

Double_Deoxys.png

GEN 3: DEOXYS
Deoxys appears to draw inspiration from certain representations of aliens and visual representations of the DNA double helix.

Deoxys is an abbreviation of deoxyribonucleic acid—or DNA—the medium of genetic code in many cellular organisms. It was mentioned in the 7th movie that Professor Lund gave it the name Deoxys.
Sweet Arceus. I love this Pokemon. Deoxys is easily the most amazing Gen 3 Pokemon I've ever seen. Born from an alien viral mutation, Deoxys is hands-down the definitive alien in the Pokemon series, and it does a good job at it. With its alien-like genetic makeup, Deoxys is a Pokemon capable of changing into numerous forms and even regenerate its body if blown away by a powerful foe. That is sick. Speaking of the forms, that is obviously a topic that must be discussed. Deoxys has a total of 4 forms, and unlike most legendary form differences, Deoxys's stats are drastically altered with every form it changes into. The various forms that Deoxys shapes into results into the most powerful stats of any non-Mega. Attack Form Deoxys is the ultimate sweeper with both of its offensive stats reaching a maximum of 504, trumping both Mewtwo and Rampardos. While Deoxys-A has the lowest defenses out of any Pokemon, it's very, very, very fast, so make sure you utilitize its sweeping skills and don't try anything reckless. Speed Form Deoxys is the fastest non-Mega ever. Its Speed stat can reach a maximum of 504. Deoxys-S trumps even Ninjask, Accelgor, and Electrode in terms of Speed. Good Arceus... Defense Form Deoxys outclasses even Lugia when it comes to defenses. In fact, Deoxys-D has the highest defenses out of any Psychic-type. This thing rivals even Shuckle! That is an achivement. There's also a funny thing to note about its forms. Defense, Normal, Attack, and Speed. In that order, it spells DNAs. Clever Game Freak is clever. Its concept is very unique. Unlike most legendaries, Deoxys is not based on mythological creatures or urban legends. Instead, Game Freak decided to take a trip to biological elements and make it based on our very own genetic compound and merged that with the literal representation of aliens and the visual representation of a DNA double helix. That is beyond genius. Deoxys is amazing. With its multiple forms, ridiculous stats, ingenious concept, awesome battle theme, and overall design, it is my favorite Gen 3 Pokemon to date.

Lucian_Bronzong.png

GEN 4: BRONZONG
Bronzong is based on a dōtaku, Japanese bells which were believed to have been used to pray for good harvests. They are often decorated with patterns representing nature and were buried, occasionally with bronze mirrors and weapons, in isolated locations. Bronzong and the fact that it evolves from Bronzor also seems to be based on an old Japanese myth present in the book Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things by Lafcadio Hearn. The priests of Mugenyama wanted to forge a bell for their temple, so they asked the local women to donate their bronze mirrors for this purpose. A woman contributed her mirror, but later regretted it. Because of her repentance, the mirror wouldn't melt in the furnace until she killed herself. Before her suicide, she said that whoever would break the bell would be given great wealth by her ghost. A multitude of people tried to break the bell by ringing it furiously, so the tired priests managed to roll it down a hill into a swamp. Additionally, Bronzong's facial features resemble those of the Mesoamerican rain god Tlaloc, who is often depicted as being predominantly cyan in color. In Mexico City, which is located on the site of the former capital of the Aztec empire, artifacts are often discovered during construction-related excavation, which Bronzong's Pokédex entry in Pokémon Diamond may reference.

Bronzong is a combination of bronze and gong (a type of musical percussion instrument) or dong (onomatopoeia for deep bell reverberation).
Bronzong is a strange case among Psychic-types. First off, it's a highly defensive Pokemon. That's something you don't see very often in a Psychic-type. In addition to its unique design, Bronzong's Pokedex entry really intrigues me. The Pokedex entry from Platinum says, "It brought rains by opening portals to another world. It was revered as a bringer of plentiful harvests." The dex entry from Diamond says, "One caused a news sensation when it was dug up at a construction site after a 2000-year sleep." Interesting. It's references like its origin which leads me to like this Pokemon. Also, in battle, Bronzong is no paper tiger. It has a BST of 500, Levitate, and a fine movepool with Stealth Rock, Gyro Ball, Hidden Power, Earthquake, Toxic, Light Screen, Reflect, and Hypnosis. It's definitely one Psychic-type to count on.

Caitlin_Gothitelle.png

GEN 5 (Excluding Meloetta-Aria): GOTHITELLE
Gothitelle appears to be based on a stylized depiction of a young woman wearing gothic lolita style clothing. It may also be based on the philosophical concept of the astral body. Its ability to predict the future using stars may allude to fortune tellers or Romani people.

Gothitelle may be a combination of gothic and mademoiselle (French for the title of miss), tell, or stelle (Italian for stars, both stelle and tell referring to its ability to foretell the future through the movement of the stars) and may be a derivation of "göksel" Turkish for "celestial").
Being known as the Astral Body Pokemon, Gothitelle is just glamorous to look at. Its psychic powers can distort space and show images of distant stars and even the past. Just by looking at the stars, it is able to predict the future. Makes up for a good constellation tracker, doesn't it? Gothitelle has a BST of 490, Shadow Tag, and a good movepool with Psychic, Psyshock, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power, Signal Beam, Trick, Grass Knot, Thunder Wave, Calm Mind, Rest, and Reflect. When it comes down to it, Gothitelle is one beautiful Psychic-type that one should always be aware of.

malamar_by_maximumspazzitude-d6cz7nf.png

GEN 6: MALAMAR
Malamar is based on an upside-down squid. Considering its body and tentacle position, it may have been inspired by the vampire squid. Its ability to perform hypnosis on its prey may also be a reference to the hunting behavior of cuttlefish, who also rely on hypnosis via color changing and flashing. It's Dark/Psychic typing and menacing form may reference extra-dimensional, tentacled monsters often found in science fiction.

Malamar may be a combination of mal- (Latin for bad) and calamari.
Malamar is one of the more original concepts in Gen 6. Apparently it can hypnotize others to boss them around. No wonder it's considered malicious. Malamar has a BST of 482, a unique typing in Dark/Psychic, Contrary, Suction Cups, Infiltrator, and a good movepool with Aerial Ace, Facade, Foul Play, Frustration, Night Slash, Payback, Psycho Cut, Return, Reversal, Rock Slide, Superpower, and its signature move, Topsy-Turvy. Also, its evolution method is a rather cool feature on the 3DS, in that you have to hold it upside-down.

Kenzo_Aerodactyl.png

GEN 1: AERODACTYL
It appears to be based upon pterosaurs, prehistoric flying reptiles, particularly the rhamphorhynchoidea branch, due to Aerodactyl's possession of teeth and a long tail. It also seems to possess some dragon-like characteristics, such as that of a wyvern, a two legged variety of dragon, which would explain its being on Lance's team.

Aerodactyl is a combination of aero (Greek for air) and pterodactyl.
Aerodactyl is one menacing fossil. It has teeth as sharp as saw blades, and it has been said to be the king of the skies in prehistoric times. It isn't just birds that are roamers of the skies. Aerodactyl has a BST of 515, Unnerve, and a good movepool with Stealth Rock, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Fire Blast, and Taunt. In XY, it gets an awesome Mega Evolution. If you discover an Old Amber, take it to a scientist, as Aerodactyl is one Pokemon that should be considered.

Megi_City_Corsola.png

GEN 2 (Excluding Tyranitar): CORSOLA
Corsola is based on coral, possibly red coral, which is used as a precious stone.

Corsola may be a combination of coral and sole (a piece of coral) or solar.
Now, aside from Tyranitar, Gen 2's Rock-types are less than stellar. Corsola is one of them. Its battling skills are not that great, as its BST of 380, no ability to help it out, and a shallow movepool hinders it. Regardless, it has a unique appearance, being based on coral, and its tip is so beautiful that it is regarded as treasure.

Paul_Aggron.png

GEN 3: AGGRON
Based on the fact that it eats the iron, it may draw inspiration from Pulgasari, a monster which eats iron in Korean legend. It may also be based on a Triceratops and various therapods.

Aggron may be a combination of aggressive, iron, and don. It may also involve aggro (British slang for aggression).
Aggron is one tough Pokemon. Being known as the Iron Armor Pokemon, it is a menace. Apparently, the gouges on its armor measure how many battles it has fought and is worn as a memento. Now that's one impressive tank. Aggron has a BST of 530, Rock Head, and a good movepool with Head Smash, Heavy Slam, Earthquake, Superpower, Aqua Tail, Autotomize, Low Kick, and Magnet Rise. In XY, it gets an even tougher Mega Evolution. Aggron is definitely one Pokemon to consider for a Gen 3 Rock-type.

Palmer_Rhyperior.png

GEN 4: RHYPERIOR
It appears to draw much of its inspiration from a rhinoceros, aspects of various dinosaurs (such as the Triceratops) and a tank. It may also have connections with an Ankylosaurus, hence the clubbed tail and many defensive plates.

Rhyperior is a combination of rhinoceros and superior.
Rhyperior is a freaking tank. Seriously, it's one of the strongest physical Rock-types in Gen 4, with a BST of 535 and Solid Rock. Rhyperior has the highest Attack out of all nonlegendary Ground-types, the total being 416. That is crazy. Rhyperior also has the highest HP out of all Rock-types and of all Ground-types. Rhyperior's movepool is also huge, with moves like Stealth Rock, Earthquake, Rock Blast, Stone Edge, Dragon Tail, Megahorn, Ice Punch, and Rock Polish. One of my favorite things about Rhyperior is what it does on a regular basis. According to the Pokedex, Rhyperior shoots Geodudes from holes in its palms like missiles. In a nutshell, the only true thing you can call Rhyperior is a beast, and I love it for that.

Terrakion_M15.png

GEN 5: TERRAKION
Terrakion appears to be based on the character of Porthos from the novel The Three Musketeers. Like Porthos, Terrakion is the heaviest, largest, and strongest member of the trio. It also has traits of big horn sheep and oxen. Like the other members of its trio, its nose resembles that of a sheep, goat, or other hoofed animal.

Terrakion is derived from terra (Latin for earth), or terracotta (a clay-based material, as well as its respective color), and possibly champion.
Hailing in from the caverns, Terrakion is one brute, as it can destroy a castle wall in one blow. Now that's a Pokemon you do not want to mess with. Terrakion has a BST of 580, a unique typing in Rock/Fighting, Justified, and a great movepool with Close Combat, Stone Edge, X-Scissor, Sacred Sword, Quick Attack, Stealth Rock, Taunt, Swords Dance, Substitute, and Rock Polish, and Rock Slide. In Kyurem VS The Sword of Justice, it trains with Keldeo so it can become a Sword of Justice. With good spirit, one can really show Terrakion's might.

tyrantsd_by_lintufriikki-d6r2awg.png

GEN 6: TYRANTRUM
Tyrantrum seems to be based on the Tyrannosaurus, though it also shares characteristics, including the orange facial crest, with dinosaurs in the Carnosauria group. Considering its orange crest and white fringe upon its chin and neck, it may have also been based upon a king, with the crest acting as a crown while the white extensions are its beard and cape.

Tyrantrum may be a combination of Tyrannosaurus, tyrant, and tantrum.
Tyrantrum is the absolute king of the prehistoric. Known as the Despot Pokemon, its jaws can shred through even metal plates like they were nothing. In fact, during prehistoric times, absolutely nothing can stop a Tyrantrum, leading to its kingly behavior. Way to self-promote itself. Tyrantrum has a BST of 521, a unique typing in Rock/Dragon, Strong Jaw, Rock Head, and a good movepool with Aerial Ace, Brick Break, Crunch, Dragon Claw, Dragon Tail, Earthquake, Facade, Fire Fang, Frustration, Head Smash, Ice Fang, Return, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Thrash, and Thunder Fang. If you can train it hard enough, you can assure that a king will reign on your team.

Valley_of_Steel_Magneton.png

GEN 1: MAGNETON
Magneton is a cluster of three Magnemite which in turn seems to be based on the objectification of electromagnetism, one of the four fundamental interactions of nature. They are likely linked through strong electromagnetic force.

Magneton may be a reference to magneton, a unit of magnetic movement, or a magnetron forms the core of a microwave oven.
Magneton is a freaking tank, especially by NFE standards. The magnetic forces holding Magneton together can dry up moisture, disrupt electeonics,  and even raise heat. It has a BST of 465, a unique typing in Electric/Steel, Magnet Pull, Analytic, and a good movepool with Substitute, Magnet Rise, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power, Volt Switch, Flash Cannon, Thunder, and Charge Beam. Magneton is definitely worth considering as a Gen 1 Steel-type.

Brock_Forretress.png

GEN 2 (Excluding Scizor and Skarmory): FORRETRESS
Forretress is based on a bagworm, possibly one inhabiting a discarded shell of a horse chestnut or a walnut. Because of its "shell", and the fact its spikes resemble cannons, it may have been based on a giant clam or other mussels and shellfish with functioning nozzles.

Forretress and Foretos are a combination of forest and fortress. It may also contain turret, referring to the nozzles on its body that it uses to launch Spikes.
Forretress is one tough nut to crack. Having its body covered in a steel hard shell, it can shoot fragments to attack enemies. It has a BST of 465, Sturdy, and a good movepool with Rapid Spin, Spikes, Stealth Rock, Volt Switch, Gyro Ball, Hidden Power, Toxic Spikes, and Explosion. Also, what's inside of a Forretress remains a mystery. Who knows what's in there?

Jirachi_M06.png

GEN 3: JIRACHI
Jirachi's design and ability of granting wishes probably refer to the habit of "wishing upon a star", so that the wish will come true. Considering its humanoid appearance and ability to grant wishes, it is also possible that it was inspired by Arabic myths about genies, or djinn. In some myths, imprisoned genies would grant wishes to the person who released them. The tags of paper on its head are a reference toward the paper strips (短冊, tanzaku) written on Tanabata.

Jirachi is derived from желать zhelatʹ (Russian for wish). It may also involve 幸 sachi (wish, happiness, or fortune) or the anglicized jireh (yireh, Hebrew for provider).
Whenever someone around me brings up a legendary Pokemon, they usually don't bring up Jirachi. I find that sad, to be honest, as I find Jirachi to be a great legendary. Jirachi is a very unique Pokemon, having the power to grant an infinite amount of wishes. To this day, Jirachi is the lightest Steel-type there is, weighing little more than 2.5 lbs. While its typing isn't the most unique, it does have very well-balanced stats, with a BST of 600, Serene Grace, and a variety of moves like Substitute, Calm Mind, Thunder, Thunderbolt, Psyshock, Flash Cannon, Water Pulse, Iron Head, Body Slam, Thunder Wave, Wish, Protect, U-turn, Stealth Rock, Ice Punch, Fire Punch, Trick, Healing Wish, Psychic, Grass Knot, Hidden Power, Toxic, Energy Ball, and its signature move, Doom Desire. The reason why I love Jirachi is mainly because of the movie it starred in, known as Jirachi: Wish Maker. Throughout the movie, Jirachi is cute and enjoyable.

Barret_Magnezone.png

GEN 4 (Excluding Heatran): MAGNEZONE
Magnezone appears to be based on the concept of a fused Magneton; one of the Magnemite taking a larger form and the remaining two Magnemite taking the forms of the smaller bodies on each side. The Magnemite evolution line seem to be based on the objectification of electromagnetism, one of the four fundamental interactions of nature. Magnezone in particular is possibly based on electromagnetic forming caused by electromagnetic fields and combined with an objectification in the form of a flying saucer or a UFO.

Magnezone is a shortening and combination of magnetic zone, an alternative name for a magnetic field.
Time for yet another Sinnoh evolution to get some praise. Similar to what other Sinnoh evolutions did to their pre-evolutions, Gen 4 turned Magneton into an even more powerful, discharging force of destruction. When exposed to a certain magnetic field, Magneton's molecular structure becomes more densely compressed together, giving it much more power in a very futuristic security robot look. Magnezone is the placeholder for the highest Special Attack out of all nonlegendary, non-Mega Electric-types, reaching a maximum of 394. It has a BST of 535, Magnet Pull, and every move that Magneton can learn. Oh, the wonders of electromagnetism. In addition to the change in power, Magnezone can learn some new defensively based moves. Speaking of Defense, that's another thing that Magnezone greatly excels in. Its Defense can reach a maximum of 361. If that wasn't enough, it also has a unique typing, being the only fully evolved Electric/Steel so far. This typing gives Magnezone a very useful advantage. Magnezone and its pre-evolutions have 12 resistances and 1 immunity. I'd hate to pick a fight with one of these things. As far as strength goes, Magnezone is one Steel-type I highly recommend, even over Registeel. Its evolutionary method is a strange way to evolve a Pokemon, but I can personally overlook it. Magnezone is powerful, bulky, and is altogether another awesome Sinnoh evolution.

Cobalion_M15.png

GEN 5 (Exluding Ferrothorn): COBALION
Cobalion appears to be based on the character of Athos from the novel The Three Musketeers. Like Athos, Cobalion is the oldest and the de facto leader of the group. Like the others of its trio, its appearance is based on ungulates. It bears close resemblance to a markhor (a type of goat) and species of antelope such as the greater kudu or eland. Like the other members of its trio, its nose is shaped like that of a sheep or goat.

Cobalion and Cobalon are derived from cobalt (a metal and a color) and possibly champion.
Being known as the Iron Will Pokemon, Cobalion is the trio master of the Swords of Justice. Its glare is so hypnotizing that even stubborn Pokemon follow its commands. Now that's what you call an iron fist. Cobalion has a BST of 580, Justified, and a variety of moves like Close Combat, Hidden Power, Volt Switch, Stealth Rock, Taunt, and Thunder Wave. In Kyurem VS The Sword of Justice, Cobalion is a wise and serious leader. Overall, Cobalion is a Pokemon that should be added to your list when considering a Gen 5 Steel-type.

doublade_by_theangryaron-d6nttjk.png

GEN 6 (Excluding Aegislash and Klefki): DOUBLADE
Doublade appears to be based conceptually on a pair of fully sentient, possessed magical swords. Considering the crossed swords and shield connecting the Pokémon together, it is probably based on a coat of arms. The fact that it started off as an ordinary sword as a Honedge may mean it could be based on the bushido mythos behind katana use; katanas possessed the user samurai's soul and attacked of its own free will. Visually, considering its build and hilt, Doublade seems to be based on a pair of either spatha, claymore, or possibly jian swords with their own scabbards, tassel-like prehensile limbs, and a shared shield connecting its scabbards together.

Doublade is a combination of double and blade.
Considering that there are only four Steel-types introduced in Gen 6, Doublade is my third-favorite of them. Using its two swords, it has very high coordination and unpredictable attack patterns, which can trump that of even the Black Knight. Doublade has a BST of 448, a unique typing in Steel/Ghost, No Guard, and a good movepool with Aerial Ace, Brick Break, Facade, Frustration, Gyro Ball, Iron Head, Night Slash, Pursuit, Return, Rock Slide, Sacred Sword, Shadow Claw, and Shadow Sneak. When it comes to Gen 6 Steel-types, Doublade and its evolution are outstanding.

Misty_Starmie.png

GEN 1: STARMIE
It appears to be a stylized seastar, with a second set of arms on its back similar to a crown of thorns starfish. Starmie also bears resemblance to the Mesopotamian goddess Inanna's iconography.

Starmie is derived from star (referring to its shape) and mie, which involves 珠 mi (gem or jewel), referring to its core. In English, Mie is considered a corruption of me (the personal pronoun), in opposition to the yu (you) in Staryu. This pun is not present in their Japanese names; while Starmie shares its name in both languages, Staryu's Japanese name is Hitodeman (roughly "starfish man").
Starmie is a huge mystery. Apparently it can fire electric waves from its core that can reach the furthest parts of the universe. In fact, Starmie is considered extraterrestrial by some people. It has a BST of 520, Analytic, Natural Cure, and a broad movepool with Hydro Pump, Surf, Thunderbolt, Psyshock, Ice Beam, Rapid Spin, Scald, Recover, and Trick. With all that said, Starmie is one excellent jewel that can really shine.

Politoed is likely based on a tree frog, possibly the European tree frog. The swirl on its stomach may represent visible internal organs, like those of a glass frog.

Politoed is a combination of polliwog and a corruption of toad. It may be a play on the phrase 'poly-toed', meaning 'possessing toes' (the feet were digitless as Poliwhirl).
Being the king of all Poliwag and Poliwhirl, as well as the master of rain, Politoed is one Pokemon that really changes the way battles are played. Its cries draw Poliwag and Poliwhirl to it, and it has a very powerful voice that can rival that of Exploud. Politoed has a BST of 500, Drizzle, and a good movepool with Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Focus Blast, Psychic, Hidden Power, Surf, Scald, Protect, Refresh, Perish Song, Encore, Toxic, and Hypnosis. The rain may have dried up a little in XY and decreased its popularity, but Politoed will always remain a charming Pokemon to me.

J_henchmen_Sharpedo.png

GEN 3: SHARPEDO
Sharpedo is based on a shark with the body of a torpedo. It also looks like a shark that has been cut in half. Its general body shape is also similar to an ocean sunfish. Both fish are known for their sandpaper-like skin.

Sharpedo is a combination of the words shark and torpedo. It may also involve sharp, referring to its fins and Rough Skin Ability.
What's worse than a shark attack? A torpedo shark attack. By expelling water from its backside, it can swim up to 80mph. Sharpedo can also rip through iron and even tear apart a supertanker heavier than Groudon. No wonder it's the Bully of the Sea. Sharpedo has a BST of 460, Speed Boost, and a good movepool with Waterfall, Crunch, Zen Headbutt, Ice Beam, Aqua Jet, Protect, and Hydro Pump. It is one brutal shark that will hunt any foe down. Overall, there's no better Pokemon to represent the phrase "eat or be eaten" than Sharpedo.

Paul_Gastrodon.png

GEN 4: GASTRODON
Gastrodon is based on a sea slug, perhaps specifically that in the order Opisthobranchia. The East Sea Gastrodon seems to be based on a sea hare.

Gastrodon is a combination of gastropod and don (Spanish for lord). It may also derive from Gastropteron, a species of sea slug.
Gastrodon is one sticky slug. Having two forms depending on which side of Mt. Coronet it is at, it has allopatric speciation. Gastrodon has the ability to regenerate any part of its boneless body that is torn off. That is one durable slug. Gastrodon has a BST of 475, Storm Drain, and a good movepool with Earthquake, Earth Power, Scald, Toxic, Ice Beam, Recover, and Surf. In a nutshell, Gastrodon is one of the more interesting biological phenomena in Sinnoh.

Edmund_Seismitoad.png

GEN 5: SEISMITOAD
Seismitoad appears to be a combination of a toad and a loudspeaker. The spherical "speakers" on its body might be inspired by the "warts" and poison glands found on most toads. Alternatively, inspiration may come from the Surinam toad, an aquatic amphibian whose backs are covered in pockets that hold its eggs. It may also be basd on a goliath frog because of its massive size. Its Pokédex entry mentions the fact that it creates vibrations underwater, which is also similar to the Surinam. The two bumps on its head may be based on the bells of a traditional alarm clock.
Seismitoad's punching ability can be explained in the same way as a person being able break glass with their voice. Seismitoad's hands will vibrate with the resonant frequency of the object about to be hit, causing extra damage when hit. This can cause devastating effects on objects; for buildings it can cause them to sway or collapse entirely, also known as a resonance disaster; for living creatures it could cause internal organ damage to the extent of possibly rupturing them.

Seismitoad may be a combination of seismic and toad.
Seismitoad is one tough frog. Being known as the Vibration Pokemon, it is able to shoot paralyzing liquid from its head lumps and can vibrate its hand lumps to increase the power of its punches. That is one intimidating frog. Seismitoad has a BST of 499, Water Absorb, and a good movepool with Stealth Rock, Scald, Earthquake, Toxic, Ice Punch, Hydro Pump, Earth Power, and Hidden Power. When it comes down to it, Seismitoad is one of Unova's great Water-types that should be considered.

bfg_by_mysticalmofo-d6pfmau.png

GEN 6 (Excluding Greninja): CLAWITZER
Clawitzer appears to be based on a snapping shrimp. Its deep blue coloration may be based upon Procambarus alleni, though it may also be a reference to mutated American Lobsters.

Clawitzer is a combination of claw and Howitzer.
Clawitzer is a freaking naval cannon. Having a giant claw cannon, Clawitzer can swim at a speed of 60 knots and can pierce even tankers with a cannonball from its claw cannon. That is one heavily armed lobster. Clawitzer has a BST of 500, Mega Launcher, and a good movepool with Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, Dragon Pulse, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Hidden Power, Ice Beam, Muddy Water, Scald, Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Surf, and Water Pulse. If someone thinks that a lobster with a giant claw cannon doesn't spell threatening, then that person is very mistaken.
DECEMBER 19TH: Favorite Eeveelution
Volkner_Jolteon.png

GEN 1: JOLTEON
Its physical anatomy seems to be primarily based on a herding dog or possibly a fennec fox, with several traits of coyotes. It is also feline-like; its extremely high speed resembles that of a cheetah's. It may also be inspired by the raijū, a beast from Japanese mythology whose body is made of thunder, and may take the form of a cat.

Jolteon is a combination of jolt and eon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all Eevee evolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
When it comes to Gen 1 Eeveelutions, none of them can even come close to topping Jolteon. That fur is as sharp as needles and can amplify electrical charges and generate negative ions. Jolteon is also very good in battle, with a BST of 525, Volt Absorb, and a good movepool with Thunderbolt, Thunder, Volt Switch, Signal Beam, Hidden Power, Substitute, and Baton Pass. Jolteon is quite the shock among Eeveelutions.

Virgil_Espeon.png

GEN 2: ESPEON
Espeon appears to be based on legend of the nekomata, also known as bake-neko, which are mysterious, intelligent, fork-tailed goblin cats. It additionally resembles a carbuncle, a Latin-American mythological beast which had a jewel on its forehead. It also has traits of caracals, sphynx cats, lynxes, and fennec foxes.

Espeon is a combination of ESP (a branch of psychic abilities) and eon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all Eevee evolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
Espeon's appearance is very interesting considering of its similarities to the above origins. I'm also a big Psychic-type fan, so this is a big one for me. Its mythos is interesting too, that it only follows trainers who seem worthy and can predict the future using wind currents. Espeon has a BST of 525, Magic Bounce, and a good movepool with Reflect, Light Screen, Psychic, Psyshock, Baton Pass, Hidden Power, Calm Mind, Substitute, Stored Power, Signal Beam, Grass Knot, and Protect. It is so awesome, it was even on Red's team in the second generation. At first, I, like many others was confused as to the reason. This was apparently explained in the official manga where Red captured a genetically altered Eevee nicknamed Vee that can cycle through its evolutions at will. Red bonded with Vee so much that it evolved permanently into an Espeon. Well, that's kind of endowing.

Zoey_Leafeon.png

GEN 4: LEAFEON
Leafeon bears many similarities to cats and foxes, such as its behaviors like tree climbing, and its cry sounds similar to a cat's meow or a foxes chirping. Its coloration appears to be inspired by the markings found on animals like the Siamese cat or the red fox. It also has traits of plants, such as the ability to utilize photosynthesis. The brown marks of its paws give the appearance that they were buried. In Japan, and around the world, there are stories about domesticated animals that upon entering the forest become wild and eventually become one with it. Leafeon could be an exaggerated example of this story.

Leafeon is a combination of leaf and eon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all Eevee evolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
Leafeon is gorgeous to look at. Being known as the Verdant Pokemon, it has a cellular structure similar to that of plants, enabling it to go under photosynthesis and even purify the air under sunshine. However, beneath its cute exterior lies a potent battler with a BST of 525, Chlorophyll, and a good movepool with Swords Dance, Leaf Blade, Double-Edge, Heal Bell, Baton Pass, Wish, Protect, and Yawn. Overall, Leafeon is one Pokemon that flourishes in originality and battling capabilties.

Sylveon_anime.png

GEN 6: SYLVEON
Like many of the Eeveelutions, Sylveon shares characteristics of foxes, dogs, and cats. It is more closely based on a fennec fox.

Sylveon may be a combination of sylph, a mythological creature described as invisible beings of the air and eon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all Eevee evolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
Sylveon is stunning. It can send soothing aura from its ribbonlike feelers to calm fights. No wonder it's a Fairy-type. Sylveon has a BST of 525, Cute Charm, Pixilate, and a good movepool with Dazzling Gleam, Draining Kiss, Hidden Power, Hyper Voice, Moonblast, Psyshock, Shadow Ball, and Stored Power. Eeveelution collectors, make sure you add this charming Pokemon to your party. It will be worth it.
DECEMBER 20TH: Favorite Electric Rodent
Volkner_Raichu.png

GEN 1: RAICHU
Raichu's legs and long tail are like those of a kangaroo rat.

Raichu is a combination of 雷 rai (thunder) and チューチュー chūchū (the sound of squeaking).
Raichu is my favorite electric rodent by far. Being able to glow in the dark and store 100,000 volts of electricity, it is one potent rodent. Raichu is the only electric rodent that can actually compete in battle, with a BST of 475, Lightningrod, and a diverse movepool with Nasty Plot, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power, Encore, Grass Knot, Focus Blast, and Volt Switch. The original fully-evolved electric rodent shines among all the rest.

Pichu_Brothers.png

GEN 2: PICHU
Pichu draws inspiration from mice, squirrels, and various other rodents.

Pichu is a combination of ピカピカ pikapika (onomatopoeia for sparkle) and チューチュー chūchū (the sound of squeaking). It may also be a play on プチ puchi (petit). Pichu is ultimately a diminutive of Pikachu, indicating it is less than Pikachu.
Pichu is very weak in the battlefield, even by LC standards. If you want to use a Gen 2 Electric-type on the battlefield, you're far better off using Chinchou. What Pichu really shines in, though, is its anime appearances. The Pichu Bros are two of the most well-known Pichu to date. These two are very energetic and mischievous, always causing some trouble. There's also the Spiky-eared Pichu from Arceus and the Jewel of Life, who apparently traveled through time with Celebi. Finally, there's Ukelele Pichu, the partner to the player in Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs. While the game was rather subpar, that doesn't stop Pichu from being a cute Electric-type.

Plusle_Minun_anime.png

GEN 3: PLUSLE
It seems to be based on a cheerleading mouse, chipmunk or rabbit. It could also be an incarnation of a positive electric charge.

Plusle and Prasle are derived from プラス purasu, meaning plus, as in something with a positive electrical charge. A partial anagram of pulse may also be present in its name.
Plusle, while not strong on its own, can be fun to use in doubles, preferably with Minus Manectric. In the anime, Plusle is usually seen with Minun, and the duo often take the role of cheerleaders. The duo also appear in Pokemon Pinball RS to block the Sapphire Field's Poke Mart. There are a few times when Plusle is seen alone, such as Pokemon Colosseum as a bonus Pokemon and Pokemon Ranger as Solana's partner. In that game, Plusle is very strong, being the only one that has a Poke Assist that can shock other Pokemon. Now that's one shocking cheerleader.

Dawn_Pachirisu.png

GEN 4: PACHIRISU
Pachirisu is based on a squirrel.

Pachirisu is a combination of パチパチ pachipachi (electric crackling) and 栗鼠 risu (squirrel).
In terms of battling skills, Pachirisu is the weakest out of all fully-evolved electric rodents. The only time to actually use it is when you're a Pokemon Ranger and need something to shock Pokemon. In the anime, Dawn's Pachirisu is very hyperactive and mischievous, trying to get things done its way. It also leaves Dawn in embarrassment by zapping her hair, leaving it in a mess. That's one squirrel that provides plenty of comic relief.

Iris_Emolga.png

GEN 5: EMOLGA
Emolga appears to be based on the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel.

Emolga may be a corruption of Emonga.
Emolga may not be powerful in battle, but in terms of appearance, it is very cute. In the anime, Iris's Emolga is very lazy and gluttonous, and also very manipulative in ways like using Attract to make other Pokemon give her food. Also, you just got to laugh at how annoyed the other Pokemon, especially Ash's Snivy, are when they get dragged out due to Emolga using Volt Switch. Way to self-promote yourself, Emolga.

Clemont_Dedenne.png

GEN 6: DEDENNE
Dedenne seems to be based on a hamster or gerbil combined with a television antenna.

Dedenne may be a combination of 電気 denki (electricity) and antenne (French for antenna).
Even though Dedenne isn't that strong in battle, it still distinguishes itself with a unique typing of Electric/Fairy. In the anime, the single Dedenne so far has been shown to be lazy but impressed by Ash's Pikachu. We may not know much about Dedenne, but it may surprise us later on.
DECEMBER 21ST: Favorite Baby Pokemon

Satchel_Magby.png

GEN 2: MAGBY
Magby seems to be a combination of a booby or duck with a mythical salamander of fire. The spike on its back gives resemblance to a baby iguana.

Magby is a combination of magma (intrusive molten rock) and baby. It may also be a corruption of maybe.
Out of all of the Gen 2 babies, Magby stands out the most to me. The Live Coal Pokemon can breathe 1100°F flames, and these flames show Magby's health conditions. Magby has a BST of 365, Flame Body, and a good movepool with Flare Blitz, Mach Punch, ThunderPunch, Overheat, Fire Blast, Cross Chop, Hidden Power, Flame Charge, and Brick Break. In a nutshell, Magby is one baby that can really be hot when trained properly.

Wynaut_anime.png

GEN 3: WYNAUT
Like its evolution, Wobbuffet, Wynaut is probably based on an Okiagari-koboshi doll, a Japanese traditional doll with squinted eyes that stands back upright when pushed over. It is a symbol of perseverance.

Wynaut is a play on the phrase, "Why not?"
Wynaut is a very cute Pokemon. Being known as the Bright Pokemon, it can endure attacks and counter back. Wynaut has a BST of 260, Shadow Tag, and a good movepool with Counter, Mirror Coat, Encore, Destiny Bond, and Tickle. That egg from Lavaridge Town is all worth it in the end, as Wynaut will make your foes think twice before attacking.

Riolu_anime.png

GEN 4: RIOLU
Riolu appears to be based on the Egyptian god Anubis, who has the head of a jackal. It may also be based on a raccoon due to the mask-like markings on its face and its small pointed ears.

Riolu is Lucario with the first and last syllables reversed and the ca omitted.
Riolu is just as awesome as its evolution Lucario. Like Lucario, Riolu uses auras to communicate with others, and the intensity changes depending on emotion. Riolu has a BST of 285, Prankster, and a good movepool with Roar, Copycat, Substitute, Protect, Drain Punch, and Toxic. With all that said, hatch that Egg from Riley and train your Riolu well, and you have a potent Pokemon in your party.
DECEMBER 22ND: Favorite Mega Evolution
ALL OF THEM

No, seriously, I couldn't decide between one at this point. They all get a boost in both appearance and battling capabilities. Mega Evolutions are a nice way to reintroduce old Pokemon and add some nostalgia. Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Alakazam, Gengar, Kangaskhan, Pinsir, Gyarados, Aerodactyl, Mewtwo, Ampharos, Scizor, Heracross, Houndoom, Tyranitar, Blaziken, Gardevoir, Mawile, Aggron, Medicham, Manectric, Banette, Absol, Garchomp, Lucario, Abomasnow... all of them look awesome before and after Mega Evolving.
DECEMBER 23RD: Favorite Single Stage
Mew_M01.png

GEN 1: MEW
Mew is similar to a vertebrate embryo. Its morphology is similar to a jerboa, having large hind legs and a long skinny tail. It is purported by scientists to be the ancestor of all other Pokémon, a reference to the recapitulation theory. It also shares some traits with cats.

Mew may be derived from 妙 myō (strange/unusual), mew (the sound a kitten makes, referring to its size and cat-like appearance), or mutant (myūtanto), or it may be a combination of mystery and new (considering that it is mysterious and "newly" discovered).
I'm sure many of you were expecting to see Mew to show up eventually. Well, here it is, in all its cute and powerful glory. Being the supposed ancestor of all Pokemon, Mew is among the rarest Pokemon ever. Mew is so rare that it's actually considered a mirage by both Pokemon scientists and even the common folk. Mew has a BST of 600 and Synchronize. Also, thanks to its ancient genealogy, Mew is able to learn almost any move, almost any move. All TMs, all HMs, Transform, Metronome, you name it. Being the original fairy legendary, Mew is easily the most diverse Pokemon ever. Even with all that diversity, Mew is not really focused on power, unlike its more powerful duplicate. This is another reason why I really like Mew. Mew pretty much spends its entire life playing and having fun. Whenever Mew's onscreen, I can't help but smile the whole time. Spoken up primarily in myths, Mew is one of the most interesting Pokemon in the mind of researchers. Since it's able to learn so many moves, researchers have often wondered if Mew truly is the ancestor of all Pokemon. Even though it resembles a vertebrate embryo, I personally find Mew to be unbearably cute. I mean seriously, who doesn't think Mew is cute? It's as if the designers were deliberately trying to make Mew cute. Everything about Mew is cute: its name, its pink coloration, and especially the way it sounds. Bottom line, I love Mew a lot.

Smeargle_anime.png

GEN 2: SMEARGLE
Smeargle appears to be based on a beagle and a painter.

Smeargle may be a combination of smear and beagle.
Now here's one Pokemon that you should always have when available. It's the painting beagle, Smeargle. Smeargle can use its paintbrush tail to paint stuff. At first, Smeargle may not seem like much, with only a BST of 250. But there are two reasons why Smeargle has been so successful. First off, it can have the ability Moody, which has been banned due to the chances of raising evasion with little risk. The second and main reason is its signature move, Sketch. With Sketch, Smeargle can learn almost any move in the entire series, even some devastating moves like Baton Pass and hazards. Catch a Smeargle, Sketch the right moves, and you have a beagle that can paint a beautiful picture of victory.

Latios_anime.png

GEN 3: LATIOS
Latios appears to be a cross between a jet plane and a dragon. It and Latias may also draw inspiration from the philosophy of yin and yang. They may also be based upon the aeons in Gnosticism, being that certain aeons are immaterial beings of concepts existing in pairs of males and females emanated from God and one another; also, their species is "Eon." Latias and Latios are also based on birds, and due to Latias's shared origin with Blaziken, they could be based on junglefowl.

Latios may derive from lateo (Latin for to lie hidden). Os as a suffix may have been added to make it sound more masculine, opposite the more feminine-sounding as in Latias.
Soaring the skies of Hoenn, this telepathic dragon flies so fast, that it can even outspeed military jets. Then again, I guess it comes out as no surprise considering that the eon duo has the highest base Speed out of all Dragon-types. Their Speed can reach a maximum of 350. Being the male counterpart to Latias, Latios shares a lot of status similarities with her, as you would expect from a legendary duo. Both of their BSTs are 600 and they have Leviate. Like Latias, Latios has a signature move, Luster Purge. Latios can also learn some other great moves like Draco Meteor, Surf, Psyshock, Trick, Hidden Power, Roost, Dragon Dance, Outrage, Earthquake, Reflect, Light Screen, Memento, Dragon Pulse, and Calm Mind. The eon duo members are the only Dragon/Psychic types so far. With his superb psychic attributes, Latios possesses the intelligence to actually detect the location of others and even sends their emotions through telepathy. Despite being the offensive member of the eon duo, Latios boasts a very docile and calm temperament, meaning that Latios does not like fighting others when it can be awarded by other means. Well, that's one entry I can relate to. Latios also had a role in Pokemon Heroes, being the serious, protective, and responsible member of the eon duo, even going as far as sacrificing his own life to stop a massive tidal wave from barreling into Alto Mare. Rest in peace, my dear friend, for you will be missed immensely.

Azelf_anime.png

GEN 4: AZELF
Azelf appears to be a pixie or a fairy, although its Japanese name suggests that it's a gnome. Azelf and the rest of the trio could possibly have originated from the Imperial Regalia of Japan, which are also called the Three Sacred Treasures. Azelf would be the Kusanagi, which embodies valor.

Azelf may be a combination of azure or us and elf. It could also be a corruption of self.
When it comes to Sinnoh's lake guardians, none can impress me more than Azelf. Being known as the Willpower Pokemon, it is able to enter and exit its own body and other bodies. It controls one's will, and if humans harm it, they will be paralyzed for the rest of their lives. That strong will also helps Azelf exceed in battle, with a BST of 580, Levitate, and a good movepool with Stealth Rock, Taunt, Thunderbolt, Fire Blast, Reflect, Light Screen, U-turn, Explosion, Psyshock, Psychic, Hidden Power, and Grass Knot. If you have the will to train an Azelf, it will pay off in the end.

Tornadus_anime.png

GEN 5: TORNADUS
In Incarnate Forme, Tornadus is based on Fūjin, the kami of wind. It may also have drawn inspiration from genies.
In Therian Forme, Tornadus seems to be based on a bird of prey, most likely an eagle, vulture or other large avian species. It may also draw inspiration from the Vermilion Bird of the Chinese Four Symbols constellation, or from Huitzilopochtli, a god from the Aztec mythology that resembles a hummingbird.
In an interview with Nintendo Dream, Ken Sugimori revealed that Tornadus was originally intended to be red.

Tornadus and Tornelos are derived from tornado and Aeolus, ruler of the winds in Greek mythology.
Now we have the last of the Forces of Nature to be nominated in this event, Tornadus. Being known as the Cyclone Pokemon, it can travel up to 200 mph and blow away houses with its tailwinds. Tornadus has two forms: Incarnate and Therian. Incarnate Tornadus resembles a typical genie and is more on the supportive side, while Therian Tornadus resembles a bird of prey and is the more offensive form. Regardless of forms, Tornadus makes up for an interesting Pokemon for its mythological references and great battling capabilities.

zygarde_by_xous54-d6pfilj.png

GEN 6: ZYGARDE
Zygarde's appearance is based on a serpent in the shape of the letter Z. It may also draw inspiration from both the Níðhöggr and the Jörmungandr. Jörmungandr, often written Jormungand, or Jörmungand and also known as the Midgard Serpent (Old Norse: Midgarðsormr), or World Serpent, is a sea serpent, the middle child of the giantess Angrboða and Loki. According to the Prose Edda, Jörmungandr is punished by Odin by tossing it into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent grew so large that he was able to surround the earth and grasp his own tail. Níðhöggr is the the serpent from the Poetic Edda which resided at the bottom of the world tree Yggdrasill and gnawed at its roots. The patterns spread upon Zygarde's body are very similar to and may be based upon ribose and deoxyribose molecules. Its tail is possibly based in shape on base pair codons, the essential building blocks of the DNA double helix.

Zygarde may be a combination of Z-axis, ζυγωτός zygōtos (Greek for joined), zygote, and garde (French for guard). It can be also be a combination of zygōtos and midgard (Old Norse: Miðgarðr).
Being the last Pokemon in the Pokedex so far, Zygarde is very special. Being known as the Order Pokemon, it monitors the ecosystem. Zygarde has a BST of 600, Aura Break, and a good movepool with Coil, Dragon Dance, Dragon Pulse, Earthquake, Extreme Speed, Focus Blast, Outrage, Rock Slide, Sludge Wave, and its signature move, Land's Wrath. This mysterious-looking snake is a must to have in your collection.

DECEMBER 24TH: Favorite Pokemon Design
Clair_Dragonair.png

GEN 1: DRAGONAIR
It appears to be based on sea serpents or ryu, traditional Japanese dragons or Chinese dragons who bring good luck. It also appears to look like a snake. In fact, its tail makes it resemble a rattlesnake. Its wing-like ears on its head resembles the wings on Greek god Hermes' shoes, and its long, snakelike body may be a reference to the snakes on his scepter. It's also very likely that it was based on the imugi, which is a proto-dragon that resembles a snake and lives in water or caves much like Dragonair. After an imugi lives a thousand years a jewel (called a Yeouiju) will fall from the sky and if the imugi catches it, it will become a full fledged dragon, which may be where Dragonair acquires its jewels from.
The jewel on Dragonair's neck might also be a reference to the Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, in which the moon princess Kaguya-hime asks some princess to bring her back some items, one of which includes a colored jewel from a dragon's neck.

Dragonair may be a combination of dragon and air (referring to its ability to change the weather or to its air of grace and majesty) or debonair (graceful, referring to its graceful flying capabilities). It could also make reference to a "lair", the traditional home of a dragon.
Just look at the way Dragonair is designed. I love the slender form of proportions. Just look at this thing. It's a very graceful and beautiful-looking Pokemon. Dragonair is good in the battlefield as well, with a BST of 420, Marvel Scale, and a good movepool with Dragon Dance, Outrage, Rest, and Sleep Talk. Dragonair is definitely worth catching in Gen 1, for it is marvelous in design and evolves into a powerful beast.

cyndaquil__quilava_and_typhlosion_by_treiskaideka-d64qvtk.jpg

GEN 2: THE CYNDAQUIL LINE

I just love this evolutionary family's design. The color scheme works. The blue and tan offset each other very well, and the bodies shape well into Flame Wheel. Just look. It seems like this line was designed with that move in mind. Cyndaquil is incredibly cute, and Quilava is a nice step up. Typhlosion is one of the coolest names any Pokemon could have. It has a BST of 534 and Blaze. Its movepool is very impressive, being able to learn Eruption, Fire Blast, Focus Blast, Hidden Power, Sunny Day, and SolarBeam. This evolutionary family is just so well designed.

Ash_Sceptile.png

GEN 3: SCEPTILE
Appearance-wise, this Pokémon resembles the dinosaur known as Dilophosaurus. The orbs of nutrients on its back may be based on the fact that many leguminous plants have nitrogen stored in nodes on their roots. The Treecko line's appearance and mannerisms are also strongly derived from leaf-tailed geckos.

Sceptile may be a combination of reptile and Sceptridium (referring to its fern-like tail) or sectile (referring to the sharp blades growing on its body). It may also derive from scepter (from its title as "King of the Forest") or scissors (referring to the blades on its wrists).
Sceptile is just... wow. Sure, being called a forest lizard may not sound so cool, but trust me, this is no ordinary lizard. Known as the king of the forest, Sceptile is without peer in jungle combat. Sceptile's incredible fighting skills is thanks to its extreme agility. Sceptile's BST is 530, the highest out of any grass starter. It has a surprising amount of Speed. Considering it's its greatest stat, Sceptile's Speed is definitely one of the reasons why it's so deadly. Its Speed can reach a maximum of 372, the fastest out of all nonlegendary Grass-types. Of course, with great speed comes great power. Right behind that absurdly high Speed stat, Sceptile greatly excels in Special Attack as well. Its Special Attack can reach a maximum of 339, making it very useful in the offensive department. Also, Sceptile's movepool is ridiculously good among grass starters. With its reptilian physique, Sceptile is able to learn a vast array of moves, with moves like Leaf Storm, Hidden Power, Focus Blast, Rock Slide, and Earthquake. Sceptile excels in visuals. Just look at those leaf blades and that stare. Sceptile is so awesome that it can kill you with a single stare from those eyes. It's strong, it's swift, and overall a total beast altogether.

Gallade_anime.png

GEN 4: GALLADE
The single fin on Gallade's head resembles the helmet worn by murmillo-class Roman gladiators or the Corinthian helmet (with a horsehair crest) that was worn by Greek hoplites. It may also be based on medieval knights. Additionally, its battle stances (depicted in-game and in artwork) resemble the en garde position and parries of modern fencing.

Gallade may be a combination of gallant and blade. It may also involve Sir Galahad, a knight of Arthurian legend.
Gallade is inherently more honor-based, being a master of courtesy and swordsmanship which is very ironic as it can sense and predict what its opponent's doing. Right down on a bonfire playing gentleman. Anyways, Gallade has a really coolness factor to it. Those awesome arms, they go all Wolverine and extend elbow blades. Gallade has a BST of 518, Steadfast, Justified, and a superb movepool with Swords Dance, Drain Punch, Psycho Cut, Night Slash, Leaf Blade, Substitute, Close Combat, Shadow Sneak, Wish, Protect, Will-O-Wisp, Stone Edge, and Bulk Up. And the Wolverine elbow blades! That is awesome.

Burgundy_Darmanitan.png

GEN 5: DARMANITAN
Darmanitan's physical appearance is based on an ape and the Daruma doll. It is also likely based on the adage of the three wise monkeys—"See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil"—as Darmanitan in their Zen Mode have their eyes become blank, their mouths shut tightly and their ears covered, sitting patiently in contrast to their bold posture in Standard Mode. Its Zen Mode may also be a direct reference to Bodhidharma, achieving enlightenment. The varying presence of pupils between its Standard Mode and Zen Mode reflects the practice of painting in the eyes of a Daruma doll, and their symbolic value in relation to goal fulfillment.

Darmanitan is a combination of Dharma (alternate spelling of daruma) , and orangutan.
I love everything about Darmanitan. Just look at that grin. It just stays, "I'm gonna start a fight and have an awesome time doing it." It's mainly the grin. I just love the grin. Darmanitan has a BST of 480, Sheer Force, and a good movepool with Flare Blitz, Rock Slide, Superpower, U-turn, and Earthquake. Darmanitan's high HP and attack power make it a downright bulldozer. Its ability Zen Mode gives it an interesting mythos. Oh, man, I just love this Pokemon. It's got a great typing, great design, useful in battle, and nice mythos.

yveltal_by_xous54-d5rtpy3.png

GEN 6: YVELTAL
Yveltal's appearance is based on an avian in the shape of the letter Y. It may be based on the giant Hræsvelgr, or "Corpse Swallower," which takes the form of an eagle and sits at the end of the world, creating wind as it flaps its wings. It may also be based on the Hawk Veðrfölnir or the unnamed eagle. According to the Poetic Edda, the unnamed eagle resided at the top of the world tree Yggdrasil, with Veðrfölnir sitting between its eyes. It may also be based on the wyvern.

Yveltal comes from the letter Y. It may also be derived from yvel (a Middle English spelling of evil) and quetzal.
Yveltal is very sinister-looking. Being known as the Destruction Pokemon, it saps life energy from those surrounding it when it reaches the end of its life. Yveltal has a BST of 680, Dark Aura, and a good movepool with Acrobatics, Air Slash, Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, Hurricane, Roost, Sucker Punch, Taunt, and its signature move, Oblivion Wing. Yveltal is definitely one awesome mascot.
DECEMBER 25TH: Favorite Legendary
Moltres_M02.png

GEN 1: MOLTRES
Like Ho-Oh, Moltres is based on the legend of the phoenix. It is most likely based on either the Arabian phoenix or the Slavic Firebird. Others claim that the bird is based on the Japanese mythical bird known as 朱雀 Suzaku, guardian of the South, and is not a true phoenix. Regardless, the Pokémon has a very similar appearance to both the phoenix and the Suzaku. It may also be based on a heron or Bennu, because of their similarities in shape. It also embodies traits from a number of other firebirds, such as the three-legged bird.

Moltres is a combination of molten and tres (Spanish for three, indicating that it is the third in the series of Kanto legendary birds). It may also derive from molt.
Moltres is another great member amongst the legendary birds. Being the fire master of the trio, it can bring spring to cold lands when it migrates to the south. Moltres has a BST of 580, Pressure, and a good movepool with Hurricane, Fire Blast, Hidden Power, U-turn, Agility, and Roost. It also makes an appearance in the SSB series, where it deals high amounts of damage and powerful knockback to anyone touching it. Moltres is one hot bird.

Lugia_M02.png

GEN 2: LUGIA
Lugia's origin is unclear. While it is regarded a legendary bird Pokémon, it also has elements of dragons, dinosaurs, and sea creatures. It is suggested that Ryūjin, a dragon who lived on the ocean floor and was the Shinto god of the sea, is a possible basis for Lugia. The two have similarities in mythology, and further evidence lies in Lugia's Shiny coloration: red and white are also the colors of the coral of which the Ryūgū-jō's palace was made. The beluga whale, a white whale with a similar body shape and coloration to Lugia, is also cited as a design source: at the very least, it may also form part of Lugia's name origin. Lugia's back fins and tail spikes are reminiscent of the Stegosaurus.

Lugia may be derived from lutetium (a silverish element), which in turn is named after Lutetia (the Roman name for Paris, the city of light). It may also involve Lugeo (Latin for to lie dormant, alluding to the way Lugia lies at the bottom of the sea) and luna (Latin for moon). Alternatively, it may come from beluga whale.
Lugia needs no introduction. Being the trio master of the legendary birds, Lugia is one tough avian. Lugia's BST is 680, and it has Pressure, Multiscale, and a good movepool with Roost, Whirlwind, Dragon Tail, Ice Beam, Substitute, Toxic, Reflect, Calm Mind, Thunder, and its signature move, Aeroblast. Despite having a powerul disposition, Lugia is not as offensive as one would think. Lugia is the defensive member of the tower duo and also one of the most defensive Pokemon ever. Its Special Defense can reach a maximum of 447, and its Defense can reach a maximum of 394. That is some serious bulk right there. Lugia also has a dark incarnation, XD001, which is the codename alias of the monstrous Shadow Lugia, the most powerful Pokemon that Cipher has ever created. Shadow Lugia is the ultimate Shadow Pokemon, having a heart that is so encased in evil that it altered Lugia's natural appearance in a polar opposite tone. In conclusion, Lugia is just plain awesome.

Latias_anime.png

GEN 3: LATIAS
Latias appears to be a cross between a jet plane and a dragon. It and Latios may also draw inspiration from the philosophy of yin and yang. They may also be based upon the aeons in Gnosticism, being that certain aeons are immaterial beings of concepts existing in pairs of males and females emanated from God and one another; also, their species is "Eon." Latios and Latias are also based on birds, and due to Latias's shared origin with Blaziken, they could be based on junglefowl.

Latias may derive from lateo (Latin for to lie hidden). As as a suffix may have been added to make it sound more feminine, opposite the more masculine-sounding os in Latios.
The other member of the eon duo, Latias is just as good as her blue counterpart. It has downy feathers that can enfold its body and refract light, turning it invisible. It can also communicate through telepathy and has a high amount of intelligence and can understand humans. Latias has a BST of 600, Levitate, and a good movepool with Draco Meteor, Psyshock, Surf, Hidden Power, Roost, Calm Mind, Dragon Pulse, Substitute, Reflect, Light Screen, Healing Wish, and its signature move, Mist Ball. Like Latios, Latias appeared in Pokemon Heroes, being the docile and playful one. Latias is one Pokemon that stands out in Gen 3.

Cresselia_anime.png

GEN 4: CRESSELIA
The general body shape of Cresselia seems to be based after a swan. Her head is covered in crescent moon shapes and she wears many aurora-colored planetary rings. These rings resemble Saturn's rings. Cresselia shares characteristics with Sarimanok, a mythical being who is usually depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail. Sarimanok's head is profusely decorated and is said to be a symbol of good fortune. She also may be based on the Alkonost, a female headed bird god who usually departs to society to warn it.

Cresselia and Crecelia may be a combination of crescent (referring to a phase of the moon) and Selene (Greek goddess of the Moon).
Cresselia is one slender Pokemon. Having the power to dispel nightmares, holding one of its deathers can being happy dreams. Also, its wings represent a crescent moon very well. Cresselia has a BST of 600, Levitate, and a good movepool with Moonlight, Toxic, Ice Beam, Psychic, Hidden Power, Reflect, Light Screen, Thunder Wave, and its signature move, Lunar Dance. Cresselia is one glorious dream come true.

Virizion_M15.png

GEN 5: VIRIZION
Virizion appears to be based on the character of Aramis from the novel The Three Musketeers. Like Aramis, it is the best at swordplay. Aramis in the novels was also the most feminine, vain, and romantic, qualities that Virizion possesses relative to its comrades. It physically resembles antelopes, such as the gerenuk or other species of gazelle. It may also be based on female deer. Like its comrades, its nose resembles that of a sheep.

Virizion may be derived from viridian (a bluish-green color), or simply viridis (Latin for green), and possibly champion.
Being the final member of the Swords of Justice to be nominated, Virizion oozes class. Its horns are as sharp as blades, and it is associated with grasslands. Virizion has a BST of 580, Justified, and a good movepool with Calm Mind, Giga Drain, Focus Blast, Hidden Power, Swords Dance, Close Combat, Leaf Blade, Stone Edge, Work Up, Reflect, Light Screen, and Taunt. Virizion is one vain and romantic Pokemon worth considering.

xerneas_by_xous54-d5riplt.png

GEN 6: XERNEAS
Xerneas's appearance is based on a cervid in the shape of the letter X (known as a saltire in heraldry) or an X mark. It may incorporate elements of Eikþyrnir and the four stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór. Eikþyrnir resides in Valhalla eating the foliage of Læraðr with glowing horns that drip with dew. According to the Poetic Edda, the four stags resided in the trunk of the World Tree Yggdrasill and ate its branches and fresh shoots.

Xerneas comes from the letter X. It may be derived from cervus (Latin for deer), Cernunnos (horned Celtic god), and Ceryneian Hind.
Xerneas is one beautiful Pokemon. Being known as the Life Pokemon, it is able to grant eternal life. Xerneas has a BST of 680, Fairy Aura, and a good movepool with Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Moonblast, Thunder, and its signature move, Geomancy. Xerneas is one majestic deer that brings the rest to their knees.
DECEMBER 26TH: Favorite Starter
Ash_Charizard.png

GEN 1: CHARIZARD
Charizard resembles the European dragon, certainly one of many forms told and rendered in legends.

Charizard is a portmanteau of the words char (to burn) and lizard.
Charizard is one of the most popular Pokemon of all time. Being a fire-breathing, flying lizard, Charizard can melt even boulders and massive glaciers. No wonder it has been praised so much. Charizard has a BST of 534, Solar Power, and a good movepool with Sunny Day, Fire Blast, Air Slash, SolarBeam, Hidden Power, and Focus Blast. It also gets two Mega Evolutions in XY. Charizard is one memorable Pokemon from the depths of Gen 1.

Kinso_Feraligatr.png

GEN 2: FERALIGATR
Like Totodile and Croconaw, Feraligatr is a crocodilian. It visually resembles an alligator.

Feraligatr is a combination of feral and alligator. It may also derive from ferocious. The shortening of "gator" into gatr is most likely a result of the ten-character limit on English Pokémon names in Generation II.
Feraligatr is one wild alligator. Its powerful hind legs enable it to move quickly, even on the ground. Feraligatr has a BST of 530, Torrent, Sheer Force, and a good movepool with Swords Dance, Aqua Jet, Waterfall, Crunch, Superpower, and Ice Punch. Now that's one croc that's awesome.

Tommy_Swampert.png

GEN 3: SWAMPERT
Like Mudkip and Marshtomp, Swampert is based on the mudpuppy, axolotl, or mudskipper.

Swampert may be a combination of swamp and rampart, expert, or inert.
As the last Hoenn starter to be nominated in this event, Swampert is one tank. It can drag boulders weighing more than a ton, swim faster than a jet ski, see in murky water, and even predict storms. Swampert has a BST of 535, Torrent, and a solid movepool with Stealth Rock, Scald, Waterfall, Earthquake, Toxic, Roar, Ice Punch, Superpower, and Stone Edge. Swampert  is one powerful mud fish.

Flint_Infernape.png

GEN 4: INFERNAPE
Infernape is based on a monkey. The gold elements in its design as well as its Japanese name are most likely linked to Son Goku, the Japanese interpretation of the character Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong is the main character in the Chinese epic Journey to the West and is a monkey with powerful abilities. It is also similar to the Vanara, a race of ape-like humanoids in the Hindu epic Ramayana. It is most likely based off the martial art Muay Thai which uses all the limbs and possibly Monkey Kung Fu, another type of martial arts. It may have also be loosely based on Crazy Monkey Defense, a boxing style that incorporated elements from other martial arts such as Muay Thai.

Infernape is a combination of inferno and ape.
Infernape is one brutal monkey. Its fire never goes out, and it can pummel opponents faster than a Staraptor's dive. Infernape has a BST of 534, Blaze, Iron Fist, and a good movepool with Flare Blitz, Close Combat, U-turn, ThunderPunch, Mach Punch, Overheat, Hidden Power, Fake Out, Stealth Rock, Fire Blast, and Stone Edge. Infernape is one blazing, conquering climbing monkey that puts the rest to the ground.

Bianca_Emboar.png

GEN 5: EMBOAR
Emboar is based on the soldier of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It and its pre-evolutions, as stated by Ken Sugimori, were designed in a Chinese style. Because of its Chinese style, it may be based on Zhu Bajie, a pig demon from the Chinese tale Journey to the West. It seems to also take inspirations from a pig or boar in a professional wrestler's or possibly a lucha libre's attire. The swirled pattern that surrounds its abdomen is visually similar to the patterns on ding or ancient Greek pottery.

Emboar is a combination of ember and boar. It may also derive from the terms emperor, caesar, or tsar, all of which are used as imperial titles.
Emboar is one brutal boar. Being a master of martial arts, it can crush tough foes by using its own weight. Emboar has a BST of 528, Blaze, Reckless, and a good movepool with Flare Blitz, Superpower, Wild Charge, Sleep Talk, Fire Blast, Grass Knot, and its signature move, Heat Crash. This high-spirited boar will leave dents as hard as a professional kung fu fighter.

delphox_by_xous54-d6pp43z.png

GEN 6: DELPHOX
Delphox is based on a fox with elements of a witch or mage.

Delphox may be a combination of Delphic oracle and fox.
Delphox, being a magical fox, is one slender mage. It is able to ensnare its enemies in a fire vortex as hot as 5,400°F and can even predict the future. Delphox has a BST of 534, Blaze, Magician, and a good movepool with Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Grass Knot, Heat Wave, Hidden Power, Overheat, Psychic, Psyshock, Shadow Ball, Solar Beam, and its signature move, Mystical Fire. Delphox is certainly one tricky witch.
DECEMBER 27TH: Coolest Pokemon
Solidad_Lapras.png

GEN 1: LAPRAS
This Pokémon is based on the fabled Loch Ness Monster in Scotland. The creature and this Pokémon are said to resemble an extinct order of marine reptiles known as Plesiosauria. However, while Lapras has a long neck, it is not nearly as long as the necks of those in the order Plesiosauria, whereas Lapras's body is very similar to the creature that is said to be in Loch Ness. Lapras' shell and horns hint it may also be inspired by Placodonts. Lapras's intelligence, singing and rarity can be comparable with some cetaceans, especially blue whales and humpback whales. It is also possible that its long neck and head (as well as its whole body) take some inspiration from the mast heads and hulls of Viking ships.

Lapras is a corruption of Laplace.
Lapras is more seen as a form of transportation than anything else. From its actions, it would appear that Lapras is basically the camel of the sea, only a lot cuter. I enjoy just about every aspect about Lapras: its appearance, its concept, its stats, and its behavior as well. Lapras is very well balanced. Its BST is 535, and it can have Water Absorb. Even though its greatest stat is HP, it is far from useless. Its movepool is also far from shallow, being able to learn moves like Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Roar, Surf, Heal Bell, Toxic, Dragon Dance, Substitute, Waterfall, Return, Rest, Sleep Talk, Curse, and Avalanche. Although the plesiosaur is known for its predatious hunting activity, Lapras is definitely not a ferocious predator. Just another gentle giant, I suppose.

Jasmine_Steelix.png

GEN 2: STEELIX
Steelix, like Onix, is most likely based on a combination of a snake and earthworm. It may also been based on the wyrm, a type of dragon that has been presented as limbless and burrowing.

Steelix is a combination of steel and onyx. It may also refer to helix (with regards to its serpentine body).
Steelix is a Pokemon which I'd always try to get on my team if I could. It is a reliable Pokemon that I've always had in each gen from 2 onward. Besides the fact that it looks pretty cool, its evolution from Onix removed some of its weaknesses and gave it more resistances to counter Pokemon. Steelix has a BST of 510, Sturdy, and a good movepool with Stealth Rock, Earthquake, Gyro Ball, Roar, and Dragon Tail. Steelix is always there for me to absorb damage while I soup my team up with battle items until maximized. And I really like the name, it sounds so cool.

Drew_Flygon.png

GEN 3: FLYGON
Flygon is based on the winged, adult stage of the antlion, which highly resembles a dragonfly. Often the adult antlion and dragonfly are confused with one another, and Flygon could draw inspiration from both. In fact, some species of dragonflies are commonly called "sand dragons", which could account for Vibrava and Flygon's type combination. In keeping with its Dragon type, it also possesses a dragon-like build and reptilian features such as its arms and tail.

Flygon is a combination of fly and dragon. It may also be a partial anagram of dragonfly.
Flygon is a Pokemon that I fell in love with the instant I saw one. One of the reasons why I came to love Flygon so much is that it shares a lot of characteristics with that of insects. Even though Flygon's a Dragon-type, it's not actually a dragon. It is certainly a unique Dragon-type. Like all Dragon-types, Flygon is statistically very good, being very well balanced and having a relative BST of 520, Levitate, and a good movepool with Outrage, Earthquake, U-turn, Fire Punch, Stone Edge, Dragon Claw, Roost, and Superpower. Flygon's greatest stats are Speed and Attack, both reaching a maximum of 328. Aside from Speed and Attack, every one of its stats are base 80. Its wings are rhombus-shaped, much like several species of dragonflies. Its eyes look a lot like compound lenses like those you'll see on flies, and it also has a pair of green antennae which point back. Flygon is one beast of an insect.

Regigigas_anime.png

GEN 4: REGIGIGAS
Regigigas is based on the golems of Hebrew legend. The legends cast them as servants of higher powers and are said to have writing on their heads. When the writing is removed, the creature would be weakened.

Regigigas is a combination of regis, Latin for royal, and γίγας gigas, Greek for giant.
Regigigas is a monster of a Pokemon. Being a legendary trio master, you would imagine that Regigigas possesses a great reel of strength, and yes, you would be correct. Having towed the continents with ropes, Regigigas makes for one of the strongest Pokemon ever, both statistically and physically. In a nutshell, Regigigas is basically a Slaking with the same BST of 670, less HP, and much better defenses, but similar to Slaking, Regigigas possesses a signature ability that greatly hinders it, Slow Start. In addition to its strength and legendary status, Regigigas has one of the coolest names of any Pokemon. Just say it. Regigigas. You feel kind of powerful when you say it too. Regigigas's cry is one of my favorites as well. It is one of the coolest-looking Pokemon I've ever seen. It boasts a very robotic and powerful appearance, and the colored gems and patches of moss are a nice touch as well. Regigigas is a ridiculously strong physical fighter, with its Attack getting as high as 460. It's no wonder this beast towed the continents with its strength alone. Regigigas is capable of pounding its opponents into the dust with devastating attacks like Thunder Wave, Confuse Ray, Substitute, and Return. Regigigas also has a signature move, Crush Grip. Regigigas is one tough golem.

Ingo_Chandelure.png

GEN 5: CHANDELURE
Chandelure is a combination of Hitodama (a blue, black, or purple-fire associated with ghosts and yōkai, equivalent to the western will-o'-the-wisp) and a chandelier.

Chandelure may be a combination of chandelier and lure or allure.
Chandelure is one of the most creative Pokemon I've ever seen. It's typing is awesome. A Ghost/Fire type? Oh my Arceus, thank you Game Freak, thank you! I wanted one of these things for a long, long time. Chandelure has a BST of 520, Flash Fire, and a good movepool with Substitute, Fire Blast, Shadow Ball, Hidden Power, Pain Split, Overheat, Energy Ball, Calm Mind, Flamethrower, Sunny Day, and SolarBeam. Chandelure has a ridiculously high Special Attack stat. Chandelure has the highest Special Attack of any nonlegendary Pokemon ever, which can reach a maximum of 427. Not only is Chandelure powerful, but it's also very mysterious and a little bit creepy. Just imagine a fiery apparition that hides inside an object that dangles over your very head. Being a possessed chandelier, Chandelure lures any unsuspecting organism close to it, and consumes its very spirit and burns it up inside its flaming center, leaving the body to rot without its soul. If you're wanting a good Fire-type, then give Chandelure a chance.

gourgeist_by_macuarrorro-d6p9fxh.jpg

GEN 6: GOURGEIST
Gourgeist appears to be based on both gourd and modern pumpkin Jack-o'-lanterns. Its multiple sizes may possibly be a reference to the variety of sizes pumpkins and gourds come in. Its upper body is based on the candles within Jack-o'-lanterns themselves, with the curl being its wick and its hair-like extensions its dripping wax.

Gourgeist is a combination of gourd and geist.
Gourgeist is one creative Pokemon. It can curse anyone hearing its song, similar to what some characters do in Halloween shows. Gourgeist has four forms, each with a BST of 494, Pickup, Frisk, and Insomnia. It also has a signature move, Trick-or-Treat. These different sizes are a nice trace back to the different sizes pumpkins are being sold at. Gourgeist is one cool jack-o'-lantern.
DECEMBER 28TH: Cutest Pokemon
Ash_Pikachu.png

GEN 1: PIKACHU
Pikachu has physical aspects resembling several species of rodents. Its species name suggests that it is based on a mouse. Despite its name, it bears little resemblance to the pika. Its ears do bear similarity to those of other lagomorphs, however.

Pikachu is a combination of ピカピカ pikapika (onomatopoeia for sparkle) and チューチュー chūchū (the sound of squeaking).
Being the mascot of the entire series, Pikachu is by far the most famous of all Pokemon. Pikachu has very odd battling capabilities. It has a BST of 300, Lightningrod, and a good movepool with Substitute, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power, Encore, and Grass Knot. Without held items, Pikachu is ridiculously weak, but if you're lucky enough to get the rare Light Ball, Pikachu's offensive stats are doubled. With max Special Attack and that Light Ball equipped, Pikachu's Special Attack can get as high as 436. Despite this, I never use Pikachu except in SSB. Why not? Because its defenses are terrible, with base 30 Defense and base 40 Special Defense. Pikachu is cute and very, very amusing at some points.

Tammy_Jumpluff.png

GEN 2: JUMPLUFF
Jumpluff appears to be based on the final stage in the lifespan of a dandelion. Its two hands closely resemble pom-poms, and its movements in the 3D games also brings to mind a cheerleader.

Jumpluff is a combination of jump and fluff. It could also be a corruption of plush, meaning a soft object or an object made of felt. The names of all stages of its evolutionary line are based on the phrase, "Just a hop, skip, and a jump away."
Jumpluff is one smooth plant. It can control its flight even in hurricanes. Jumpluff has a BST of 450, Chlorophyll, and a strong movepool with Encore, Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Toxic, U-turn, Substitute, Leech Seed, and Protect. This cottonous weed is one charming Pokemon, especially its movements in the 3D games.

Georgio_Delcatty.png

GEN 3: DELCATTY
Delcatty is based on a domestic cat. It also has hair style similar to a poodle.

Delcatty is a combination of delicate and catty.
Now as far as battling skill's go, Delcatty is not that strong.it exceeds in contests, though. Delcatty is not your typical cat, as its method of evolution is different than fhe rest of the cats. Till, Delcatty's appearance give it a charm of its own, and is bound to give Coordinators a helping hand.

Cher_Roserade.png

GEN 4: ROSERADE
Roserade appears to be based on a combination of a bouquet of roses, and a mysterious patron of a masquerade ball, in which masks would be worn to hide the identity of the participants. Its mask, cape and the mention of its 'movements of a dancer' in its Pokédex entry seem to confirm this.

Roserade may be a combination of rose and masquerade (due to the appearance of wearing a mask).
I love Roserade so much. Its design is among one of the most beautiful flowers and it looks like a dancing flower nymph. Roserade has a BST of 505, Natural Cure, and a good movepool with Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Giga Drain, Hidden Power, Rest, Leaf Storm, Sludge Bomb, and Sleep Powder. Roserade has the highest Special Attack of all Grass-types, the maximum being 383. It's nice to look at, its stats are reliable, and it's a much better Sinnoh Grass-type than that freaking cherry!

Nurse_Joy_Audino.png

GEN 5: AUDINO
Audino seems to be based on a rabbit with features of a nurse or physician, with its ears acting as stethoscopes. The feelers on its ears also resemble a cochlea, the auditory part of the inner ear.

Audino may be derived from audio and a pun on the phrase "I dunno." It may also refer to the suffix ino (which denotes youth) or involve din (loud noise, referring to the fact that it has stethoscopes for ears). Its name could also be a portmanteau of audio and lapin, a term for rabbit.
Audino is one cute-looking medic. It doesn't do a good job as Chansey, but it can hear very well, feel a Pokemon's heartbeat, and even predict egg hatching. Audino has a BST of 445, Regenerator, and a variety of moves like Wish, Heal Bell, Protect, Toxic, and Double-Edge. And another thing to note, these rabbits give off huge amounts of EXP. Audino is one Pokemon that makes itself known by essentially being Unova's nurse Pokemon.

slurpuff_by_jacanacow-d6ro4dy.png

GEN 6: SLURPUFF
Slurpuff appears to be based on a profiterole (cream puff), decorated in possibly a whipped cream or ganache and a sauce, topped with a maraschino cherry. It may also be based on other desserts or pastries, such as cupcakes or Japanese-style mille-feuille. Cupcakes are sometimes referred to as fairy cakes, which may be an inspiration for its type. Considering its lolling tongue, nose, paws, and ear-like circular extensions on its head, it may also be based on a dog, possibly a Bichon Frise or poodle.

Slurpuff may be a combination of slurp and puff. It may also be a play on the word surplus.
Slurpuff is one pretty puppy. It can smell anything, even the faintest of smells. Slurpuff has a BST of 480, Sweet Veil, Unburden, and a good movepool with Dazzling Gleam, Draining Kiss, Energy Ball, Flamethrower, Hidden Power, Psychic, Surf, and Thunderbolt. It is surely one treat to enjoy having.
DECEMBER 29TH: Most Disturbing Pokemon
Officer_Jenny_Parasect.png

GEN 1: PARASECT
The fungus on Parasect is identified as tochukaso, an endoparasitoid that replaces the host tissue and can affect the behavior of its insect host. The base insect is a distorted version of what is probably a cicada nymph, the parasitic fungi having caused a form of neoteny.

Parasect may be a combination of parasite (referring to the tochukaso mushroom) and insect. Alternatively, it could be a combination of parasite and sect (Latin for cut).
When Paras evolves into Parasect, something gets me off about its appearance. Maybe it's due to the fact that it has no eye pupils. And that mushroom that seems like a transformation from its evolution... well, there's some disturbing stuff in it.

"A host-parasite pair in which the parasite mushroom has taken over the host bug. Prefers damp places." -RB
"The bug host is drained of energy by the mushrooms on its back. They appear to do all the thinking." -Y
"The bug host is controlled by the mushrooms that scatter poisonous spores." -Stad
"It stays mostly in dark, damp places, the preference not of the bug, but of the big mushrooms on its back." -G/HG
"The larger the mushroom on its back grows, the stronger the mushroom spores it scatters. - S/SS
"When nothing's left to extract from the bug, the mushrooms on its back leave spores on the bug's egg." -C
"Parasect is known to infest large trees en masse and drain nutrients from the lower trunk and roots. When an infested tree dies, they move onto another tree all at once." -RS

These extracts alone make Parasect one horrifying creature. That mushroom that you would believe to be a part of its body is actually a possessor of Parasect's mind, a parasitic infestation of a Pokemon which all parasites are capable of developing to be converted into this zombifying state. That blank stare, those creepy Pokedex entries, and the horrifying reality of parasites make Parasect one of the most disturbing Pokemon ever.

Octillery_anime.png

GEN 2: OCTILLERY
This Pokémon is based on an octopus. It also has some basis on a tank or a wheeled cannon.

Octillery is a combination of octopus and artillery.
Octillery is one creepy octopus. For one, its head looks like a mixture of Birdo and a giant octopus from a horror movie. However, the main reason that Octillery is disturbing is its behavior. Read this dex entry:

"It traps enemies with its suction-cupped tentacles, then smashes them with its rock-hard head." -Silver

Now that is a disturbing way to kill your foes.

Harley_Banette.png

GEN 3: BANETTE
Its appearance and habit of sticking itself with pins is highly reminiscent of voodoo dolls. Its Pokédex backstory of an ordinary doll coming to life is similar to the Tsukumogami.

Banette is a combination of bane and marionette.
"Banette generates energy for laying strong curses by sticking pins into its own body. This Pokémon was originally a pitiful plush doll that was thrown away." -Ruby
"An abandoned plush doll became this Pokémon. They are said to live in garbage dumps and wander about in search of the children that threw them away." -Emerald
"A doll that became a Pokémon over its grudge from being junked. It seeks the child that disowned it." -DPPtBWB2W2
"This Pokémon developed from an abandoned doll that amassed a grudge. It is seen in dark alleys." -HGSS
"Strong feelings of hatred turned a puppet into a Pokémon. If it opens its mouth, its cursed energy escapes." -FRLG

Alright, what is this? A Pokemon that came to life from being sent to the wastebin by a child who wants revenge for disposing it. Now that's creepy. And for those who think it isn't, keep in mind we're talking about children here. So kids, don't throw your toys in the trash, or things will get ugly.

Marnie_Drifloon.png

GEN 4: DRIFLOON
Drifloon are based on balloons. They also resemble comb jellies, specifically tentaculata.

Drifloon is a combination of drift and balloon.
"It tugs on the hands of children to steal them away. However, it gets pulled around instead." -Pearl
"These Pokémon are called the "Signpost for Wandering Spirits." Children holding them sometimes vanish." -B2W2

A balloon that drifts on the wind kidnapping children. Again, with the mention of children! And where does Drifloon take these children? Why, to the freaking underworld, of course! Drifloon is easily one of the most malicious Pokemon ever in Sinnoh. Think of it as a balloon that was sent by the master of the underworld to abduct children. Now that's what you'd call temptation.

Yamask_anime.png

GEN 5: YAMASK
Yamask is based on an Egyptian Ba holding a death mask.

Yamask may be a combination of 闇 yami (darkness), や ya (bad), or Yama (lord of the dead in Hindu and Buddhist mythology), and mask.
"Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry." -Black
"These Pokémon arose from the spirits of people interred in graves. Each retains memories of its former life." -B2W2

You heard right, this pokemon used to be a person. That thought is just plain disturbing. You battle a spirit of a person to either catch it or defeat it. Just that one thought of raising a spirit of a deceased person kind of gets you off, doesn't it? Also, its backstory is very depressing, as it constantly cries over a harsh past life.

phantump_by_macuarrorro-d6qzrr8.jpg

GEN 6: PHANTUMP
Phantump is probably based on the stump of a kodama, the spirits of trees that sometimes inhabit old aged trees. It is also similar to other types of tree and nature spirits and deities, such as dryads.

Phantump may be a combination of phantom and stump.
"These Pokémon are created when spirits possess rotten tree stumps. They prefer to live in abandoned forests." -X
"According to old tales, these Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest." -Y

That thought of children dying with no escape from the forest? What was in the minds of the developers when they created these dex entries? Is this said to represent Aokigahara? While Pokemon like Gourgeist and Espurr are disturbing as well, I find Phantump to be the creepiest thing you could possibly have in Kalos.
DECEMBER 30TH: Most Badass Pokemon
Kabutops_anime.png

GEN 1: KABUTOPS
Similarly to how Kabuto is based on horseshoe crabs, it resembles eurypterids, prehistoric arthropods which hunted in seas and rivers and are believed to have been related to modern horseshoe crabs. The large head is also identical to the cephalon in trilobites and the spines down the back resemble thoracic sections in trilobites, though the scythes and predatory nature much more closely resemble eurypterids. Because of these cross-similarities, it may also be based on the Cheirurus genus of trilobites.

Kabutops derives from both 兜 kabuto (helmet) and 兜蟹 kabutogani (horseshoe crab). Tops might refer to the living fossil triops or that its helmet is now on the top of its head and no longer covers its whole body.
Kabutops comes on with two massive blades that would make even a Scyther blush. Using these sharp tools, Kabutops rips apart its defenseless prey and sucks their precious body fluids for nourishment. I love some awesome hands, or in Kabutops's case, two sickles. These two sickles are Kabutops's main hunting weapon, as you can clearly imagine. It has a BST of 495, Swift Swim, Weak Armor, and a good movepool with Rapid Spin, Stone Edge, Aqua Jet, Swords Dance, Low Kick, and Waterfall. Kabutops's Attack can reach a maximum of 361, and its Defense can reach a maximum of 339. That's one fossil you don't want to mess with.

Slowking_M02.png

GEN 2: SLOWKING
Slowking's shell makes it similar to hermit crabs, though it is physically similar to giant otters, giant salamanders, and hippopotamuses. Its shell "crown" may also be a reference to the mythical sazae-oni, a magical sea demon of Japanese folklore distinguished by its spiny "sazae" or "turban shaped" snail shell. It is also based on a king, as the growth around its neck is based on a king's ruff while its shell is similar to a crown.

Slowking is a combination of slow and king.
To me, Slowking has always had a unique charm of liking it. Since it evolves from Slowpoke, you think that Slowking would be just another drooling idiot for all of the people to welcome to their land. Guess again. Slowking's actually one of the most intelligent out of all Pokémon. It also has a clever sense of humor. Slowking is the only Pokémon aside from Meowth that is able to speak with its own mouth. This Slowking in particular is from The Power of One. This Slowking is one of the most entertaining Pokémon ever to appear in the anime. While it plays the role of the Shamooti shrine guardian, it definitely has a slew of hilarious and memorable quotes. Being a Psychic-type, Slowking is primarily special when it comes to stats. Slowking is statistically pretty strong. Its stats are almost exactly the same as Slowbro's, with a BST of 490 and Regenerator. The only difference is their defenses. Slowbro is physically defensive while Slowking is specially defensive. Their movepools are also nearly identical, although Slowking can learn a few more moves than its counterpart, like Dragon Tail, as well as Scald, Psyshock, Flamethrower, Thunder Wave, Slack Off, Trick Room, Surf, Ice Beam, Shadow Ball, Fire Blast, and Trick. Slowking is also the only Pokémon to tamper with theatrical realism. What do I mean by that? Well, here's what I mean. Everyone knows that the fourth wall is something extremely precious. Well, Slowking makes the fourth wall crack open in the single most amusing scene in any Pokemon movie. Slowking is just so awesome.

Kyogre_M09.png

GEN 3: KYOGRE
Kyogre is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of Leviathan, the unconquerable primal master of the sea. Its counterparts were Behemoth and Ziz. Just as Kyogre is in conflict with Groudon, it was said that at the end of time Leviathan and Behemoth would start a battle that would kill them both. The Hebrew word for Leviathan is now used for whales in modern Hebrew, which may be why Kyogre's appearance also draws inspiration from whales, especially the orca. Kyogre could also be based on Hayo and Lakandanum, the gods of the sea of the Philippine mythology.

Kyogre and Kaiorga may be a combination of 海 kai (ocean) and orca (a species described as a whale, but is more closely related to dolphins). Notably, it may also involve 海王 kaiō (king of the sea), which are the first two characters in 海王星 Kaiōsei (Neptune). It may also be derived from eygre, a tidal phenomenon.
Kyogre represents the deep ocean and the overall aquatic side of the Pokemon spectrum. Residing in deep oceanic trenches, Kyogre possesses the ability to cause tremendous downpours. Kyogre is named in mythology as the Pokemon that expanded the sea by covering the land with torrential rains and towering tidal waves. Its battling capabilities are far more devastating than you could possibly imagine. Kyogre has a BST of 670 and a good movepool with Water Spout, Surf, Ice Beam, Thunder, Hydro Pump, Calm Mind, Scald, Rest, Sleep Talk, Roar, Thunder Wave, and Substitute. Kyogre's Special Attack can reach a maximum of 438, the highest out of any mono-Water type. Not only that, but its Special Defense can even get as high as 416. That is just plain ridiculous. Kyogre's ability to cause floods is thanks to Drizzle. Plain and simple, Kyogre is tough. Its appearance is nothing short of cool. There's its pectoral markings. These markings have been a recurring design choice in the series. If you're wondering what I mean by that, then just take a look at Wes's Snag Machine, Sir Aaron's gloves, and Spencer's staff. All of them have similar markings, don't they? Well, it seems Kyogre gets a lot of respect from the developers now, doesn't it? Well, it definitely deserves it.

Giratina_Origin_Forme_anime.png

GEN 4: GIRATINA
Giratina may be based Seta, a giant centipede, from the Japanese fairytale, My Lord Bag of Rice, which was said to prey on dragon hatchlings and be as large as a mountain. Giratina is also possibly based on a basilisk. In its Altered Forme, Giratina's wings may be based on a bat's, and its body has an insect-like, six-legged feature, but its posture is similar to a sauropod. Its Origin Forme has a body similar to a serpent, while the six protrusions on its body may be based on a scorpion's stinger or spider legs. However this Forme also shares physical traits with the Amphitere, a European dragon-like creature with wings but no legs.

Giratina may be a combination of girasol (a type of red opal), girare (Italian for to wander around), or guillotine, and platinum プラチナ.
Sweet Arceus. Ths Pokemon is simply awesome. Being the third and final member of the creation trio, Giratina is arguably th most creative Pokemon I've ever seen. In addition to its huge amounts of creativity, Giratina is one of the most unique legendaries ever. For a start, no other Pokemon has the same typing as Giratina. Being a Ghost/Dragon type, Giratina makes full use of its ectoplasmic abilities and uses them to create strange teleportation rifts in both space and time, as well as the surface world. With the power of the Griseous Orb, Giratina is able to alter both its power and appearance. It has two forms, both of them being awesome beyond belief. There's its Altered Form, a more defensive state in which it can hold its own against numerous types. Then, there's its Origin Form, the master of distortions. Origin Form Giratina is more offensive than Altered Form, but it's a little more vulnerable due to lowered defenses. Giratina has the highest HP out of all legendary Pokemon, the total being 504. No don't go thinking this is all it has, oh no. Giratina is very balanced. It differs between forms, but Giratina is superb in both defense and offense. Giratina also has one of the most awesome signature moves ever, Shadow Force. Giratina is the definition of jaw-dropping.

oshawott__dewott__samurott_by_abusorugia-d4hx4gs.png

GEN 5: THE OSHAWOTT LINE

This evolutionary line is just so good. Oshawott keeps me entertained in the anime, giving some moments of humor. By the time Oshawott evolves into Dewott, it becomes more in touch with its martial arts. Through rigorous and strict training, Dewott has acquired an extra scalchop and tons of more strength to go with that awesome appearance. Samurott is a mixed attacker with mild defenses. Samurott also has an awesome moveset. It learns moves like. You can never go wrong with a sea lion basrd off of a samurai. And what is samurai without a sword? In conclusion, the Oshawott line makes up for an awesome evolutionary family. They're original, they have reasonable strength, and their samurai skills make even Yamato Man jealous.

hawlucha_by_feyrah-d6ozxy7.png

GEN 6: HAWLUCHA
Hawlucha is based on a combination of a bird of prey and a luchador, and may also draw inspiration from Aztec eagle warriors.

Hawlucha is a combination of hawk and lucha libre, a form of Latin American professional wrestling.
Hawlucha is one brute of a bird. In fact, it rivals even Machamp and Hariyama when it comes to fighting skills. Hawlucha has a BST of 500, Unburden, Limber, Mold Breaker, and a good movepool with Acrobatics, High Jump Kick, Roost, Swords Dance, and its signature move, Flying Press. This hawk from the Aztec era will hunt down any worthy opponent with flashiness.

DECEMBER 31ST: ALL-TIME FAVORITE
meloetta_s_sparkling_recital_by_laahgata-d5s4vtr.png

MELOETTA

Now alongside her great appearance and unique battling capabilities, the main reason why I love Meloetta so much is her anime roles. Typically she's a Mary Sue/Magical Girl Pokemon, but in her final appearance, she did something very spectacular, risking her own life in an attempt to calm down the Forces of Nature. That is one extraordinary action that very few others can do. Meloetta is my favorite Pokemon of all time. She's awesome, she's interesting, she's cute, she's useful, she's just everything I love about Pokemon. I'm Jinx, and Meloetta, use Relic Song!
