The Battle of the Forum Software
« on: August 24, 2015, 08:27:33 AM »
So, seeing so many Forum Softwares on the same Internet, which one(s) do you prefer, and why?

My opinions:

SMF
This is the Software this Forum runs on.
It comes with lots of features, normally only available in paid Software, and the Software in general is quite decent.
So one of my Votes to this one.

phpBB
phpBB is nice for very basic Communities, and it has lots of Mods available, until you realise how limited it is.
I know for 100% sure, you will need to bloat your Community with many Mods, to make it at least a bit workable.
And also, Post Sidebars on the right? WTF?!

MyBB
No opinion about this one, I never used it.

IP.Board
IP.Board is what I used for many, many years.
It's very feature-rich, Customer Support is great, Design is nice, and you can even let THEM fix your problems.
However, the Software itself is super bloated, so it gets slow really quick.
Other than that, the System overall is way to complicated, and Updating it is unnecessarily complex.
Nonetheless, it has a Vote.

vBulletin and XenForo
Note: XenForo is made by former vBulletin Employees, and therefore, I put those 2 together.
Both it doesn't change much, both are the worst Forum Softwares I've every used!
Complicated, full of Glitches, utterly ugly, etc., but at least the Customer Support is good.

Burning Board
No opinion about this one, I never used it.

AcmlmBoard
It's hard to Install, but once you've got it, it's one of my favourites.
The Design is awesome, features that can't be found elsewhere (Post Layouts, RPG System, etc.), and in recent days, it's super secure.
AcmlmBoard was made by a group of ROM Hackers, the 1.x Series had a reputation of being supremely insecure, but that changed in the 2.x Series, which is a complete rewrite.
It definitely has one of my Votes.

ProBoard
No opinion about this one, I never used it.

Custom made Forums
Yes, I made my own Forum Software, exclusively for DSHack.org (sorry, but it's just how it's named).
The big upside of making one yourself is, you can have only the things you want or need, and if something goes wrong, you can instantly fix those yourself, instead of waiting for someone that doesn't care about you, to release a Patch.
If you know how to Program, I highly recommend you to make a Forum Software yourself!
And it also definitely has my Vote.

Other
UltimatePisman runs off YaFS, and only that Board has it.
But I won't Vote for YaFS, as the Software itself got discontinued.

vBulletin and SMF are pretty good.
These, of which I am accustomed to. SMF for Mario Party Legacy Forum, and vBulletin for Serebii.net Forum.

I like SMF here.
I use Invision (through Forumotion) and Zetaboards elsewhere, they're pretty easy to use.
Used phpBB before, not a huge fan of it.
